Amen. Why didn't you invest in those 5 stocks individually then? In fact you could have invested in QQQ for 39% last year. I hear a lot of I only buy an index that is weighted with sure winners that dismisses SCV from one side and then not looking at the longterm investments of SCV on the other side.

I would consider the Two or Three Fund Portfolio for the simplicity and low cost. When we add additional funds we may decrease diversification and add risk. For example, Small Cap Value stocks (which are included in Total Market Index Fund) are now the WORST performing of all Morningstar categories...

True, but even when you mix strategies, you need to be able to stick with all of them. Bailing during a period of long underperformance may be the worst thing that an investor can do. But if something like SCV is only 10% of your portfolio instead of 50%, it may be easier to deal with this inevitab...

I like the TDF adding SCV by age. 1.5 x age in TDF, rest in SCV rebalancing yearly.

Since I have to buy the SCV in an ETF which isn't automatic I decided to save further by buying the TDF as 3 MUTF that are TSI, International and Bonds, but in 3 funds instead of the TDF.

I think you also have to think about the current state of the investing world and valuations. If you're going to give equal weight to the SP500 and Small Cap Value, then you're betting your future on companies like Leidos Holdings and PerkinElmer against Apple and Microsoft and Amazon.
