Re: Purchasing airline tickets at the airport

The only time I have ever tried this was with Spirit. If you look at a ticket on spirit.com, the part they call "government cut" is waived if you buy the ticket at the airport. We bought four tickets and saved the $35 government cut on each ticket. It was worth the hassle of going down to the airpor...

Re: Sneakers with good arch support

I have very flat feet and am also active. As mentioned above, if you will be doing any running or walking I would suggest going to a local specialty running store to get fit. I used custom orthotics for years but they weren't the most comfortable things. 5-6 years ago I went to a local running store...

Great reminder for a younger-but-approaching-middle-age investor like myself to stay the course!!

Re: Experian Dark Web scan

For what it's worth, I did the free Dark Web scan before I saw this posting. The scan came back and said my email address and password were found on the dark web on XX date. In this case the date was a year or two old and I had recently changed my password so I wasn't concerned about this. They do t...

Re: Help me evaluate my pension

Wow, thanks for the help! The Excel prowess of this group is impressive. I got what I was looking for: $17k more a year now to replace the pension. Also some good advice on considering the value of the pension when I look at my allocation. I am vested in the pension so I do have some guaranteed payo...

Help me evaluate my pension

I work for a private employer that offers a pension as well as a 6% 401k match. I am fully vested in the pension and if I quit today I would get some payout once I reach retirement age. Up to this point I have been investing for retirement as if I don't have a pension, mainly because I don't know if...

Re: What podcasts do you listen to?

A new podcast call "How I built this". About 30 minutes long with interviews of business entrepreneurs and inventors like Spanx, Instagram and the Cliff Bar. Basically how they got their start and their journey. Great podcast- it's a new one and I really hope they keep this up for a while. I also e...

Re: What Book Are You Currently Reading? Part VI

Just finished Without Remorse by Tom Clancy. I think this is an older book. An ex-military guy happens upon a drug dealing, prostitution ring and decides to take action against them. At the same time he gets asked to join a special forces invasion in Vietnam. As I type this I realize that this sound...

Will removing a wood burning stove reduce my home value?

I live in a split level house in Minnesota. There is a wood burning fireplace in the upstairs living room and a stand-alone wood burning stove in the downstairs den. We want to remove the wood burning stove in the lower level to free up space. Are there any realtors or others in this forum that are ...

Re: Opinion on my 401k choices and retirement planning

I made another edit to the original post clarifying my annual 401k contribution (my original number was wrong). I will adjust the his Roth investment so that I am at $5500/year and will consider opening a Hers Roth, either at the expense of the 401k or the taxable investment account. Considering the...

Ruralavalon-
I added the information you asked about. Is it your suggestion to open a Roth in her name at the expense of my 401k funding or my other, non-retirement investing?

Opinion on my 401k choices and retirement planning

Hello, Thank you in advance for reading this detailed post and offering your opinion. I would appreciate any feedback on my 401k choices and general investment options. Below is a summary of my financial situation, 401k options, and my other investments. If there is any other information that would ...
