My friend just texted "...more wonderful inputs. I amaze of the knowledge of these people about school and financial aid...We will have a final conversation with him this weekend..."

I could imagine that they will have this thread on a big screen, go over the replies and discuss among themselves.
Many thanks!

First THANK YOU all for your replies. My friend and his son find them extremely valuable. For me, this is the first time, I think, I ever get more than 10 replies in a post. I told my friend that my poster status was trending up. what could someone in their 9th/10th grade do over the next 3-4 years to put themselves in such a situation as this student. As not all families may be familiar with the importance of beginning early and not have the financial ability to enroll in additional coaching and such, it's possible that it could be 9th/10th grade by when the student and their parents understand how competitive getting admission to top schools can be. It's a bit intimidating to think that going through school enjoying the process and doing ...

Re: Stanford vs Brown vs Rice

Do long term plans include staying in TX? I would say Rice, this is an excellent school and the only one in TX I would let me kids attend. Free ride makes it better. Then, medical school somewhere in TX (baylor, UT, etc) should be an easy shoo-in. I have a friend who did just this and he is doing great as a physician. They don't know his LT plans at this moment. I would go for Stanford even if paying full freight. Question, if you don't mind sharing, what is the student's background to be accepted in several highly competitive schools. He studies at The Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science https://tams.unt.edu/ His test scores: ACT 36 (perfect) SAT 1560 PSAT 1520 (perfect) His dad just texted me that he also got full ride at USC too......

Stanford vs Brown vs Rice

I would like to hear your opinions on this. A friend's son got accepted to the above schools. They are pondering which school he should go to. His goal is to eventually get an MD. They live near Dallas, TX. Stanford is the son's first choice. Parents pay $14K/year. School pays the rest including room & board Rice is 2nd choice. School pays everything include room & board. Brown is 3rd. Parents pay $28K/year. Brown has Liberal Medical Education program, https://plme.med.brown.edu/ , in which he could get undergrad and MD in 8 years-no MCAT. He also got in Cornell, Georgetown, UT Austin, UT Dallas. For UT Dallas, everything is paid for + stipends. Update : To clarify that he got admitted to Brown's Liberal Medical Education program. S...

Re: DIY CV axle replacement -any tips from BH who have done this?

I replaced right CV axel on my 2001 legacy. I learned how to do it from watching these videos
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1tT3vmKu1g
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vjd8LT19hNE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXsCi-CryZ8

and read these instructions
https://www.subaruoutback.org/threads/d ... ent.21119/

I had to purchase extra long punch set
http://www.searshometownstores.com/prod ... -Punch-Set
to remove and install the axle pin

I did not have much issue with removing the old axle.

Re: Retiree Portfolio Model

Hi BigFoot,
First, I would like to thank you very much for adding the "Additional Exemptions" option in v17.
Second, while manually copying my inputs from v16.3 to v17, I wondered if there was a better way to save time and minimize errors.
Is it possible to have a macro to export (write) the inputs to a text file and a 2nd macro to import(read) that text file into your spreadsheet?

Like this : Inputs of OLD Spreadsheet > Export Macro > Text File > Import Macro > Inputs of NEW Spreadsheet

I'm not an excel expert so please excuse my ignorance.
Again, many thanks for this wonderful tool.

Hi BigFoot,
For federal income tax, how do I change the number of exemptions to include dependents (row # 172 on the Full Case/Base Case page)? Also, it seems that this number is always 1 regardless what I choose for Filing status (row # 174 on the Setup page). I'm using v16.3 with Excel2003.

In other words, what should I put down in my spreadsheet for the HSA when comparing numbers between Obamacare and medicaid? Thank you for your replies so far. They are very helpful!

Medicaid or Obamacare

Hello Bogleheads,
I'm an early retiree. My projected 2017 income will be low enough for medicaid. Should I increase my income (through Roth conversions for example) to qualify for a Highly Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) under Obamacare and allow me to contribute to my HSA? What are the pros and cons for each option?
Thank you.
