Re: [Using PayPal to pay bills and earn 5% on credit cards]

As of late I've used PPBP solely to pay CC companies using rewards debit cards, in some recent months putting around $3000 through it. My account wasn't closed so I guess I don't qualify as a heavy hitter doing that. Which makes me feel mildly insulted. If it is any consolation I wasn't a heavy hitter either. If you were doing $3k/month you weren't even the rounding error of what qualified as a heavy hitter. Now that makes me curious: what were the heavy hitters up to? I already had my bills going to credit cards that were then paid by PPBP. I suppose I could have tried to open 30 Affinity debit cards instead of 3, and then vastly overpaid all my CC bills and then requested credit balance refunds. But if I did that I'd have to worry not on...

Anyone still using PayPal Bill Pay successfully for Principal Management Group (HOA dues), Principal insurance (the billers were PLIC SBD …), or Prudential insurance? Thanks in advance!

Re: Help w/response to IRS letter (bank account bonuses)

Thank you, all, for your help.

It appears my tax return has now been processed. However, my refund amount was adjusted down by 22 cents and thus, no paper I-bonds were issued :(

I am assuming I will receive some letter highlighting the discrepancy and why my refund was adjusted, is this correct?

Thank you

Assuming you did need to make this payment to meet safe harbor, then you'd have a penalty of about eleven days worth of interest.

If you already met safe harbor by 1/16/2024, then there's no issue. You simply made an additional payment.
Got it, thank you so much!

I do meet a safe harbor so there won't be any penalties for making this payment. Alternately, is it better to make a Form 1040 or some other payment now rather than a 1040-ES payment? Eventually, I will be filing for an extension and likely making a payment with that (to get $5k of paper I bonds as a refund), but that won't be until April as I won't know my tax liability until then. Also, as a background, the purpose of making the payment now is to get rid of a pesky Visa gift card tha...

Re: The Final, Definitive Thread on Brokerage Transfer Bonuses

This topic is so long, very hard to find things! Has anyone moved on the WeBull 1.5% transfer offer? Any datapoint on successfully getting a WeBull bonus? I am still on the fence and want more reassurance from this community… Got an email from we bull offering 1.5% bonus on a transfer up to $30k Basically you get 0.8% on Dec 31st 2024 and then another 0.7% on Dec 31st 2025 Long story short you have to keep your cash at Webull for 2 years to get the whole bonus, but it appears you can break free after 1 year and just get 0.8% which is still pretty good. Does this work on IRAs? Also, is the limit of what they give you $30,000 (ie can transfer up to $2 million) or is are they trying to only go for $30,000 accounts? I'd assume the former but u...

Trip cancellation on PRE and other Visa Infinite cards that do not offer separate protection limited to $2.5k per trip. I forget the CSR number off top of my head but it is closer to $7.5k or $10k per trip. Researched this extensively when cared with young child who got sick often, never had to use benefit. Our trips usually cost more the $2.5k total (3 ppl to SE Asia) so CSR protection definitely better in this scenario for us.

Re: Vanguard Cash Plus Account Pilot

For those people who've been able to get a Cash Plus account, do you like it and find a use for it? I signed up, only because you cannot pay bills from the regular brokerage account. 4.7% is more than my bank pays on their money market, and it would be nice to have a higher yielding cash account that I can use to pay bills from (such as quarterly tax payments). Obviously without ATM and checks, I'll still need a regular checking account, but this seems like a nice compromise. I also like that it is more secure; no check or ATM fraud. Is the Cash Plus fully segregated from your brokerage balance so there is no way someone could initiate a fraudulent ACH pull and it would sell money in the brokerage to cover it? So far it is only helpful for...

For those using a Webull margin account (or thinking about opening one) -- I just received an email (quoted below) this morning. I'm not really sure what the consequences of this are, but it sort of sounds like the margin accounts will be transitioned to an "omnibus relationship". Can somebody comment on what this means to those of us who are using a Webull margin account because we're comfortable with Apex and like being able to see things like our recorded cost basis? Will that be going away? Dear valued client, Webull Financial LLC (“Webull”) is pleased to notify you that we will become the carrying broker for your referenced account pursuan...

I have essentially no taxable investment assets but do have IRA assets. How do I get a referral code? Best source is your own sweet-heart/spouse (or a buddy). They don’t need large IRA amounts. Once they open trad IRA account, they can generate referral code (in the App) - which you could use (and vice versa) I'm a bit confused: 1. Thank you. Would you also attach the 1099-MISC's or just the bank account statements? Thank you. The IRS already has the 1099-MISCs that were e-filed by the banks. It probably wouldn't hurt to include the 1099-MISCs, but it's not necessary. If you do include them, put them at the end. It's the statement that proves it's a bank account bonus, not a consulting fee. Thanks, won't include the 1099-MISCs then. Re: Help w/response to IRS letter (bank account bonuses)

My planned response: Bank account bonuses are taxed as interest. The bank should've issued a 1099-INT so that you could report the bonus on Schedule B. Your letter should make it clear that the bank incorrectly issued a 1099-MISC instead of a 1099-INT. If you include statements that show the bonuses being credited to your account, then you should show that it adds up to the amount reported on the 1099. Not all bonuses are treated as interest. 1099-MISC can be correct. So then do I go back to the following? Dear Sirs or Madams: We are not liable for self-employment tax on the earnings on line 8z of Schedule 1 as all income was earned from bank account bonuses. The OP later linked to the older thread explaining what happened.

This was from Spiral Financial, which was paying a $200 account opening bonus in 2022. Since this was an account opening bonus under $600, it should've been reported on a 1099-INT.

This is why it's better to update existing threads. When the whole story is in one thread, we don't have to waste time repeating something that was already cleared up months ago.

Re: The Final, Definitive Thread on Brokerage Transfer Bonuses

Is there a public link to the webull 500k/9k offer someone mentioned? I can't read that code snippet thing upthread. Here are my two hacked links (used Charles Proxy not Charlie Proxy, sorry): https://act.webull.com/actv2/routine/ira/index.html https://www.webull.com/ko-yield/1699416114037-5d012f It definitely seems to be in app only offer as the first link asks you to download the app. Only thing not clear to me at this point is whether market losses during the hold period affect one’s bonus. I am guessing the answer is no effect but some of the examples are a bit unclear. I would ask customer service but I feel like their front line reps were making things up as they go with regards to unclear terms on their cash promo, as I asked multip...

Re: The Final, Definitive Thread on Brokerage Transfer Bonuses

Webull data point: transferred from Merrill Edge completed 10/18. Transferred to cash account later moved to margin. Had cost basis re sent from Merrill Edge. Finally today shows correctly in Apex (apparently has to be manually entered if resent, initially entered incorrectly). Now time to work on DW’s transfer who still has $0 cost basis showing. WeBull question: I initiated a transfer from Public to Webull on Oct 30 for the bonus. But something happened at Public and transfer didn’t happen. Now the bonus deadline has passed. If I close out the account now, will I be eligible for another round of bonus? No idea, sorry. They do sometimes include existing account holders in some of the bonuses FWIW, but I have no idea if you qualify if you ...

I edited text to be more legible.

Short answer to the public link is not really. I hacked it from the app by using Charlie Proxy iOS browser. But the moment you load it outside of the app it says you need to download the app to continue, unless you also change the User agent sent via HTTP to match the app.

Re: The Final, Definitive Thread on Brokerage Transfer Bonuses

No link yet (shows up in app) but WeBull now has IRA bonus through 12/18 $600 for $100k no referral or $1800 for $100k with referral for each party (so if refer DW and both transfer $100k both get $1800). Hold period through end of August and bonus reward must be kept at WeBull for 90 days. Sounds pretty enticing with referral and no cost basis issues since this is an IRA. I also see this in the app. Very enticing! If anyone is interested, here are full terms and conditions: Terms & Conditions Offer Period: November 17, 2023 at 12:00 AM EST – December 18, 2023 at 11:59 PM EST. Offer Eligibility: This promotional offer (the “Offer”) is open only to individuals who (a) are at least 18 years of age, (b) reside in the United States, (c) ha...

Re: The Final, Definitive Thread on Brokerage Transfer Bonuses

Another option is recordator.com Assuming that's a recording, I would still advise people get eligibility and enrollment in writing, which cannot be misinterpreted. I have never had an issue once something is in writing, and I've had many issues when something was offered on the phone. Fair enough. I agree that in writing is best, but I’ve used recordator.com in a pinch, although not specifically for brokerage account bonuses. As a reminder, recording people without their knowledge may be illegal. Per the FAQ on the recordator site, in 12 states all parties must consent to be recorded. Thanks. I am in a one party state (ie only one person must know). Also, most financial institutions and brokerages tell me that our conversation is being re...

Re: The Final, Definitive Thread on Brokerage Transfer Bonuses

Got played by Merrill Edge. I've been churning them a few times. Rep told me $750 to move over 250K+ back in July, and I did. He reimbursed $50 transfer fee as well. Now 90 days + 2 weeks have come and gone, and they're saying I'm not approved because I cycled my money (I transferred it out last year). I don't have think I have any recourse here since my account doesn't show that I'm enrolled. Just kinda trusted the rep... oh well, moving on to Chase's self directed $700. Always get eligibility and enrollment confirmation in writing, or don't do it. Lesson for the future. If you have it, I would escalate, hard. yeah definitely learned my lesson. I don't have anything in writing so I'm just gonna move on. Didn't cost me much anyway. ...

Re: [Using PayPal to pay bills and earn 5% on credit cards]

Curious but has anyone recently tried this (in the past week or so) to pay property taxes in Orange County CA or anywhere for that matter? I heard rumors that Chase is starting to code these transactions as "Cash advances" on one of the FB groups. Seems like it's just a rumor but wanted to see if anyone has very recently done this. I have a pretty big payment coming up and also just got the Chase Business Unlimited card so need to hit the bonus spend hahaha. Paying property taxes via Billpay would be an excellent option but I don't want to screw myself over either. Just paid Orange County CA property taxes full payment with Paypal bill using Chase IHG credit card to meet SUB. No fees. Payment was posted within 3 days. I wonder wh...

Not sure if good but Robinhood has 1% bonus uncapped on Roth IRAs but 2 year holding period
Wasn't it a 3 year hold for RH?
Sorry my bad 5 years for IRA so not a good offer for sure.

Re: The Final, Definitive Thread on Brokerage Transfer Bonuses

As a follow up to my WeBull cost basis saga, I was able to get cost basis re-sent from Merrill Edge and finally got a spreadsheet emailed to me from WeBull that has correct cost basis. Apex is still showing $0 for some reason, but they are working on fixing that. Next will have to tackle DW's which also has Apex showing cost basis as $0.

Re: The Final, Definitive Thread on Brokerage Transfer Bonuses

Anybody have their cost basis come through after doing an ACAT to Webull? I did an ACAT from Vanguard to a Webull cash account on 10/18. In the cash account, I had no visibility into the cost basis whatsoever, so I transferred my shares to a new Webull margin account on 10/24. Apex is still showing a $0 cost for all shares. I've done a fair number of brokerage transfers but never had to wait so long for cost basis info to populate. I'm a bit concerned about the complexity (Vanguard -> Webull Cash -> Webull Margin). I'm also concerned that Webull customer service told me to modify the cost basis in the app. In the section of the app where you can modify the cost basis, you can only specify an average cost to the entire lot. There is no plac...
