Re: Mechanics of teen's 1st tax return
Thanks Tom.
Yes, she is claimed as a qualified dependent on my tax return and I received an EIP that included a payment for her. The entire EIP(mine plus daughter) payment is included on my return.
I am preparing another return for her and not sure what to put for the EIP payment on her return.
Not sure if this is correct, but I am thinking to keep EIP payment box blank on her return. Of course H&R Block software will raise error flag if keep EIP box blank.

Re: Mechanics of teen's 1st tax return
I am preparing a return for my teen daughter. Our situation is very similar to OP: only W-2 income(<$2500). The H&R Block Deluxe asks about Economic Impact Payment(EIP) 1 and 2. Do I have to input the entire amount( adults plus child) or child alone?
Thanks in advance!

I got $72.00 on a Takata airbag class action settlement. I have not received any 1099. Is this "taxable income"?

OnTrack2020:$59,000 yearly tuition, etc. minus $13,750 ($55,000/4 years) = $45,250
Excuse my ignorance. How does the figure $55,000 come up in the above line?.

When they calculate Social Security Tax Allowance, should they include the retirement contributions etc. ?. The pre-tax contributions to a 401k or 403b will not show in Box 1 of W2.The amount for boxes 86 and 87 would be boxes 1 + 8 from the w2.

FAFSA form: Questions
I will have to file FAFSA in the coming years and I am going through the FAFSA form 2020-2021. I see questions 86 and 87.
86. How much did Parent 1 (father/mother/stepparent) earn from working in 2018?
87. How much did Parent 2 (father/mother/stepparent) earn from working in 2018?
The instructions say "This information may be on the W-2 forms or on the tax return selected in question 80: IRS Form 1040—line 1 + Schedule 1—lines 12 + 18 + Schedule K-1 (IRS Form 1065)—Box 14 (Code A)"
My understanding is that since (86) and (87) are used for calculating Social Security Tax Allowance, Box 3 (Social security Wages) or Box 5 (Medicare wages and tips) in W2 can be used to fill 86 and 87 in the FAFSA form. Is that right?.
Thanks

Bank Bonus and Tax reporting
I received $300 bonus in 2017 from TD Bank for opening TD Premier Checking account. I was expecting a 1099-INT from them. When I contacted them, they replied:
"We are not providing tax documentation for promotion unless the amount exceeds $600.00 in a year. If you have not received more than $300.00 not reporting summary is required"
My understanding is that $300 bonus is taxable and I should report $300.00 on line 21 of 1040. Is that right? I am using H&R block Delux for tax preparation.
Thanks in advance.

I just learned that the title company sent refinance closing documents to my and my wife's email address. They misspelled my email address and I have not received it. One of the attachments has sensitive information like SSN and DOB. The documents are neither encrypted nor password protected. They offered identity theft protection service (Lifelock). What are the steps I can take besides joining identity theft protection service?
Thanks,

Hazardous Tree
An arborist brought our attention to a big hazardous tree that appears to be located in open space of our neighbourhood and approximately 59 feet away from the rear edge of our house. This tree has a fairly large cavity with rotten wood and mud. We also noticed the presence of carpenter ants in that cavity. We belong to Home Owners Association (HOA). I contacted our town about this tree, they suggested that the open space belongs to HOA and HOA should address our concern about the potentially hazardous tree. I tried to contact HOA president by several e-mails, phone calls and a certified letter. Once HOA president called me back and said that he would send somebody to take a look. I tried to contact HOA president again to check the status, ...

Amerisave Mortgage settlement
Last spring we applied for mortgage. Paid $375.00 appraisal fee plus cost of the credit report. Despite of excellent credit score and good appraisal, credit was denied. The reason they stated was that the property was unacceptable for loan. Later, we applied with another company and got a better loan. Last week we received settlement check (Sonoda, et al v. Amerisave Mortgage Corp.) for $47.78
. Few questions;
(1). Do any of the Bogleheads in this forum received Amerisave mortgage settlement check ?
(2). Does it safe to cash/deposit ?
(3). Do I have to report this as income to IRS and pay tax for $48.78 ?
Thanks,
Phil

Re: Amerisave Update
We received an e-mail from Amerisave informing us that they were unable to approve
the loan
. The reason they stated for denial was unacceptable property.
The appraisal came
around 300K and loan amount was 225k. We have credit score close to 800. We already paid them
appraisal fee ($375) and $12 for pulling credit report.
A google search of unacceptable property Amerisave shows similar type of loan denial from Amerisave.

I got another quote for an energy star certified Burnham ES24 85% efficient around $5400. We accepted the
proposal and they're going to install it tomorrow. They will also replace air scoop with a new spiro vent and a new
expansion tank without any additional cost. If the gas company has sufficient funds, we will get $500 rebate.
Our current one is 21 years old (Vaillant brand) and have flame roll out problems and needs a new gas valve.
According to couple of HVAC guys, Vaillant is not a reliable brand. So we decided to replace it.

Could you please explain your concern with stable value funds ?Stable value funds are tricky. I'd be careful there
In my wife's 403(b) has a fixed income option non 401(a) which is a
general-account backed stable value contract. I'm thinking of moving
our bond part to this stable value fund. It has 3.05 effective annual
rate, until June 30, 2010. Here is the link:

That is a tough job. Keep in mind that this is a business and a good adviser has to compete with that retirement redefine guys, free cookies with warm smile at church gatherings, free pizza at parent-teacher association meetings etc...The advisor can add value by training a client to behave correctly during market swings. It is possible if you are explicit about that value proposition, and don't allow the clients to think that you have the skill to time the market. And most importantly, choose clients wisely.

Advisors and stay the course
I had a chat with a colleague who said that he is going to fire his adviser and find another one because of 25-30% loss of his portfolio during recent down trend. His believes that it is the duty of adviser to foresee bad events and protect wealth. IMO People who go through an adviser believe that investing is very sophisticated and an adviser can improve returns and offer bullet proof portfolio protection. Recently, in this forum, some of the advisers are arguing that they can keep clients disciplined. I know a good adviser will understand clients needs, ability and willingness to take risk and formulate an investment strategy and urge them to stick with it. But, people are always people. I wonder how they deal with people's emotions greed...

I don't understand what you are saying here either. Say I have $100 to"here is my target allocation that is right for me in my personal situation. However, I'm not really sure it's the right allocation, so I'm going to differ from my target allocation for the next x months while I'm DCA'ing." Makes no sense to me.
invest every month and my allocation is 50% equity and 50% bond.
I'm contributing $50 to my bond fund and $50 to my stock fund. Why should
DCA conflict with my target allocations ?

Here is the table: 2009 498750 2010 497438 2011 496059 2012 494612 2013 493093 2014 491498 2015 489822 2016 488064 2017 486217 2018 484278 2019 482242 2020 480104 2021 477859 2022 475502 2023 473027 2024 470428 2025 467700 2026 464835 2027 461826 2028 458668 2029 455351 2030 451868 2031 448212 2032 444373 2033 440341 2034 436108 2035 431664 2036 426997 2037 422097 2038 416951 2039 411549 2040 405876 2041 399920 2042 393666 2043 387100 2044 380205 2045 372965 2046 365363 2047 357381 2048 349000 2049 340200 2050 330960 2051 321258 2052 311071 2053 300375 2054 289144 2055 277351 2056 264968 2057 251967 2058 238315 2059 223981...

If you assume that you have 500K in Jan(09) that grows 5% and you withdraw 25K at the end each year. In this case, your principal will remain same: 2009 500000 2010 500000 2011 500000 2012 500000 2013 500000 2014 500000 2015 500000 2016 500000 2017 500000 2018 500000 2019 500000 2020 500000 2021 500000 ------------------- Now if you assume that you'll have 500K in Jan(09) that grows 4% and you withdraw 25K at the end of each year, here the table looks like: 2009 500000 2010 495000 2011 489800 2012 484392 2013 478768 2014 472918 2015 466835 2016 460509 2017 453929 2018 447086 2019 439969 2020 432568 2021 424871 2022 416866 2023 408540 2024 399882 2025 390877 2026 381512 2027 371773 2028 361644 2029 351110 2030 340154 2031 328760 2032 316911 ...

Pimco’s Gross takes a hit
http://dailybriefing.blogs.fortune.cnn. ... kes-a-hit/
The reversal is noteworthy because Gross and Pimco had feasted on an earlier bailout, the nationalization earlier this month of Fannie Mae (FNM) and Freddie Mac (FRE). Pimco Total Return jumped 1.3% on Sept. 8, outperforming its benchmark by 51 basis points, prompting Gross to tell Reuters the fund had had “its greatest one day relative performance (compared to our index) in its history.” It was nice while it lasted.
