I have used Lawn Boy mowers for ovr 30 years and would highly recommend them. I use a gasoline engine, self propelled, mulching mower.
Love the way the lawn looks after mowing! You can buy them at Lowes, Home Depot or local dealers. Never have a problem with
starting, and they are very dependable. Also easy to remove and sharpen the blade, which is key to keeping a lawn looking nice.

PenFed pulls a "fast one"
Earlier this year, I redeemed 50,000 points (earned from the PenFed 5% cash back on gas purchases credit card) for a $500 prepaid Visa card. That redemption was 1 point for $1. Today I had to redeem 29,500 points for a $250 Visa card. This redemption was 1 point for $0.84...a big reduction in point value. Customer service told me they changed the rules in August, and did not notify customers.
Anyone else notice this with their PenFed 5%cash back on gas purchases credit card?

We've had the 2013 Optima for a year now, and every time we ride in it, my wife or myself complains about the low passenger seat. We traded in a 2007 Camry and had no issue with the passenger seat. Wish now we had kept it. It is getting to the pont where we're considering trading the Optima for a 2014 model that isn't a Kia. Can anyone suggest a 4-door sedan with a passenger seat that is either adjustable or at a proper height??

I have had a Schwab One account for 10 years or so, and love it. No problems at all. Pay all my bills online. Customer service is excellent. I use their no commission ETFs (ETFs from other providers are available at around $9) in my Schwab One account, as well as other tax exempt accounts. There is a large full service office about 9 miles away which is very convenient. And, i notice they have opened a one-man office (similar to Edward Jones concept) only 2 miles away from my home. Nothing like face to face service.

Had king for a few years. It is noisy, making vinyl/rubber noises, when getting in and out of bed or changing sleep positions. Air also escapes and you have to pump it back up every week or so. Too much money for a fancy "air mattress".

Not true. I have been retired for 10 years and my wife and I spend 80 - 90% of pre retirement income. If you want to enjoy retirement, you will want to travel, enjoy some hobbies and do some things you never had time for before....new golf clubs, fishing boat, learning to fly a light airplane.....perhaps snowbird in Florida for a couple months, etc. These additional expenditures will more than make up for the money you save in not commuting, buying suits or other clothes, plus other expenditures associated with work.

Re: Farmland--Cash Rent or Share Crop?
I have two row-crop farms that I rent by crop sharing. The operator pays all expenses of planting, raising and harvesting crops and keeps 2/3 of gross income. I pay 1/3 of all fertilizer, pesticide and herbicide applications, and keep 1/3 of all gross income. This way I have some say as to how the operator farms the land (conservation, crop rotation, etc). In a cash rental, the owner loses all control over the land. Some operators will only concern themselves with short term profits and leave the owner with depleted soil and a farm that could take years to restore.
The cash flow on a cash rental is predictable and certain. In crop sharing, the income fluctuates from year to year depending on how good the crops do.

My wife purchased a new 2013 Kia Optima sedan. One of the things we overlooked was the front passenger seat. The sticker stated "power seat", but it turned out to not be a "full range" power seat. There is no adjustment, either power or manual, on the height of the seat. The seat is mounted so low that it is almost impossible to see over the dashboard.

While perhaps not a luxury vehicle, I purchased a 2013 Kia Optima with "leather" because it had air conditioned cooled seats for
driver and passenger. I also do not like hot, moist , sweaty leather seats in the summer, so the Optima a/c cooled seats work like
a charm.
I would think that a lot of the late model luxury cars today would have the air conditioned seats.

Re: 'Snowbirding in Florida'
In my experience renting condos in Ft. Myers, all rental amounts are collected by the owner well before we arrive here for the winter. Owners do pass along the 11% tax to renters. I have never had a background or credit check. Concerning the drivers who do 45 mph in the left lane.....get accustomed to all the U-turns here in Florida. Most heavily traveled streets are divided and if you're looking for a retail store of restaurant on the opposite side of the street, you will need to go to the next light, make a u-turn then come back. Perhaps one reason we sometimes "drive slow in the left lane" is because we're trying to locate the retail store or restaurant.....which can be very difficult at times because of the zoning restrictions...

Victoria, you are correct....the rental period has to be six months plus one day.
That's a good deal, Bruce, for those of you who live in Florida. You get some of your basic services paid for by others. Snowbirds contribute $$ millions $$ to the economy of many communities in Florida, but are very seldom appreciated. BTW, if you have an out of state license plate, you can expect to get "honked at" by impatient local drivers.

My wife and I have been "snowbirding" in Ft. Myers for the past 10 years. We use vrbo.com and have been very pleased. It is nice to deal directly with owners without going through a third-party agent. Other posters are right when they say you must get south of Tampa for warm, tropical weather. Anything north of that and you will find temps. much lower on average. We are not beach people (beach rentals run $4-6,000/month in Ft. Why would any Boglehead pay $75 or so annual fee for American Express, or any credit card? That's like paying an up-front load for a mutual fund. Plus, American Express is not accepted at a lot of retail outlets because of their high fees.
I use the Pen-Fed Visa....no annual fee.... (5% back on gas and 3% back on groceries). At $3/gal gas, that's $ 0.15 per gallon off.
For everything else, it's Capital One Master Card (1.5% back)

My wife and I purchased a Tempurpedic "Cloud" two years ago and do not like it. We would not spend that much again. The mattress is too soft (We like a firm mattress). It is too soft to turn over easily during the night. And, it is hot. I cannot sleep on my stomach because my head/face sinks too far into the foam. Perhaps the firmer mattress would have been a wiser choice for us. The mattress is extremely heavy. Even two people have difficulty rotating it. The mattress does have a memory and becomes softer over time where you usually lie.

After my company was raided and gutted by Carl Icahn, it went into bankruptcy. The PBGC took over the defined benefit pension plan.
It was substantially underfunded at that point. To make a long story short, the PBGC guaranteed all retirees and future retirees about 50% what they were promised. I'm not sure exactly how they arrived at that number, but their word was final.

I called my insurance company and they arranged to have an adjuster come out and do a detailed inspection. It took him about an hour. He marked a lot on the old roof with chalk and took pictures. There are other signs of serious haid damage, such as dents on downspouts, gutters, and flashing and window screens. Also look at airconditioner units to see if there are dings in the honeycomb. Apparently, all the insurance companies (and roofers) have access to an industry website which details patterns of damage with the National Weather Servic...

Like many others, my parents never trusted the stock market. All their savings were in bank CD's and farmland, which totaled well into seven figures.
I sense that many of us today are "fed up" with the stock market after the last decade, where a buy and hold strategy just barely broke even.
Perhaps our parents were wiser than we thought. Farmland and CD's look pretty good right now.

I found that the car depreciates the most during the first 3 years, then the depreciation curve levels off somewhat during years 4-5-and 6. After that it depreciates as fast as it did in the first couple years until it is practically "worthless" as far as trade in value goes.
So, I purchased a 3 year old vehicle, drove it three years, then traded it in for another 3 year old vehicle. I detest
spending time fooling with a vehicle in and out of the repair shop, so this was the least worrisome, most cost effective option for me.

The power train warranty is excellent -- 100,00 mi/10 years. Why would you buy a Government Motors car when this quality vehicle is available and MUCH cheaper?

Perhaps a little more information would be helpful. What is the age of the family member? When will he/she need the money. Can you and the account holder stand the big fluctuations? How much money is involved?
Doesn't sound too diversified to me. I have found out the hard way that CEFs can be very volatile.

We have spent the past 10 winters (Jan.-Mar) in Ft. Myers and love it. It is very family oriented. Yes, some crime in the bad neighborhoods, but is not a worry to us. You need a car, unless you rent on Ft. Myers beach or Sanibel island (both of which are a lot more expensive). Lots of things to do....great golf and beautiful beaches, great restaurants, spring training in March (Twins and Red Sox), people are very friendly, and shopping is excellent. We highly recommend it.

DO NOT buy Maytag....had a dishwasher that was nothing but $ervice
calls. We went to all GE---what a big mistake that was. Refrigerator is extremely noisy and service man shrugged it off without doing anything.
GE dishwasher went out after two years.
I learned that Sears owns the Kenmore brand, and while most of Kenmore is made by Whirlpool, not all are....some are made by small contractors.
Personally, I'd stick with Kitchen Aid or Whirlpool. We've been really happy with Whirlpool.

I believe a person's word is more valuable than gold. My wife and I took a solemn vow 48 years ago before God, family and friends to honor, cherish, and love each other in good times as well as bad...."til death do us part"
It has not always been easy, but as a team, we've been very happy and successful.

We had a king sleep number bed and couldn't wait to get rid of it. It was noisy--like an air mattress, and you have to air it back up often to keep your number, otherwise it will change on you. To me it's more of a gimmick to market the mattresses. We bought a Tempurpedic and our backs feel much better and we get a better night's sleep.

Not sure why all the petty comments are being aimed at Schwab now. I've used the Schwab card since it came out and it's great. Yes, it's already being administered by FIA Card Services....that's where I send my payments.
FIA says that there will be "no changes" to my terms, and I'll still get the 2% credited back to my Schwab account. Where's the beef??
I understand that sometime in the future, FIA may change the terms, but why worry about it now?

How did we arrive to a point in this country where restaurant servers expect a 20% tip? "Friendly service" is almost non existent any more. In almost all other countries around the world, nowhere is the tip so steep. In some countries in the Far East, the tip is 1-3%. Even in Europe, the highest tip is somewhere around 15%. No tip is expected in many countries, and in some, considered bad etiquette. In some countries a "service charge" is added to the check, and in others, the custom is to round the check up....for example, on an $18.40 check, it is rounded up to $20 to cover the tip.
