Re: How to invest cash at Schwab?
I wonder what happens if you have a balance in a Schwab MM fund (say SNOXX) and make a purchase that gives you a negative cash balance (they do allow that)? Schwab won't allow to buy without having cash ready - in the cash account. In the margin account your margin interest starts compounded if you do not have enough cash for the purchase. Schwab won't auto liquidate a MMF to satisfice the cash requirements for the purchase. Added: This is why some have a SGOV or BOXX or something like that instead of MMF at Schwab, so that they could sell it without waiting one day, and immediately use the resulting (even unsettled) cash to buy. Just do not sell what is bought until the transaction settles. It sure looks like it will let you order without...

Re: Merrill Edge not working for me
it used to be you could only buy a money market fund via voice with a broker. Now you can on the web. But the web still has very limited hours to submit the orders. Different ones have different cut off hours usually earlier than the regular market hours. also, another issue, while chrome is their suggested browser, it can apparently cause problems for some people (even after deleted cache in chrome) where I got warning like not meet minimum initial investment ,,even though you already own it... discussed this issue with them last two days...result was had to use a different browser today. I caught this buying a non money market mutual fund I already owned... but wonder if it is part of flakiness I have had sell some bits of money market fu...

Re: Confused about inherited IRA rules
Doesn't The IRS 590 pub clearly state that no distribution is required before the 10 year closeout? 10-year rule. The 10-year rule requires the IRA beneficiaries who are not taking life expectancy payments to withdraw the entire balance of the IRA by December 31 of the year containing the 10th anniversary of the owner’s death. For example, if the owner died in 2022, the beneficiary would have to fully distribute the IRA by December 31, 2032. The beneficiary is allowed, but not required, to take distributions prior to that date. The 10-year rule applies if (1) the beneficiary is an eligible designated beneficiary who elects the 10-year rule, if the owner died before reaching his or her required beginning date; or (2) the beneficiary is a des...

look at it as valuable experience gained for calculating your own rmds for when you are 73 etc !! ...
RMDs are a fairly common thing..but yes the rules have been changing too...
The RMD rules apply to all employer sponsored retirement plans, including profit-sharing plans, 401(k) plans, 403(b) plans, and 457(b) plans. The RMD rules also apply to traditional IRAs and IRA-based plans such as SEPs, SARSEPs, and SIMPLE IRAs.

Re: SIL pension options - survivor benefit?
I fall in with your strong sense. there are times where "the math" does not matter, and peoples behaviors are the key issue. Many or maybe most people just cannot handle money well and whatever is the safest path for that issue should be chosen. Most all of us were likely never taught how to handle money for a lifetime. If you are feeling that SIL doesn't sound like someone on a path to be , "for sure" self sufficient 10 years from now without the annuity, then maybe option 1 is best as you are leaning. I agree with you.

Re: Should I load up on TIPS?
The comparison to TBM is problematic because it includes both corporates (which can tank when stocks tank) and nominal treasuries (which often rise when stocks tank). If we compare a TIPS fund (e.g., VIPSX) to a treasury fund (e.g., VFITX), we see that when the S&P 500 tanks (like in 2008 and 2020), the TIPS fund takes a hit while nominal treasuries soar. Two kinds of treasuries, different behaviors. That hasn't manifested itself in the correlations I've seen. TBM's correlation with the S&P 500 since inception has been -.03, while TIPS' has been .08. Both are essentially zero. Sure, there may be some short-term fluctuations, but I don't see why that would matter to a long-term investor. I'm just reporting an observation, having loo...

maybe a glimpse of a decent news sounding prediction.....from Schwab insights on market volatility

We believe the worst of the rise in yields is behind us.

I am not for sure what "good reporting" is, but I find Schwab to have more reports, or easier to get to, analysis of my holdings etc than Merrill Edge. Although I think at both you eventually can find a "portfolio x-ray" analysis. Schwab has had in the past little video conferences on markets etc, a monthly magazine that may be email pdf only now. Merrill has this "story" format for analyzing your holdings i dislike. I cant search activity or transactions by ticker symbol at merrill like I can at schwab. Edge is fine, we just opened one for my wife since she is a bank america checking customer. Re: Best TLH partner for Total Stock Market (VTSAX)?
TLH time and found this post by searching.. A couple of questions about TLH. Let me use Total Stock Market fund an example. From a different post, it's suggested that VTSAX and VTI (a mutual fund and a ETF for total market from Vanguard) are considered to be substantially identical and thus should not be used for TLH. 1. Can one use a similar fund from different fund companies? For example, VTSAX vs. FSKAX (total markets from Vanguard and Fidelity) 2. Can one use similar ETF funds from different fund companies, for example, VTI vs. ITOT? 3. Fidelity has a zero-expense fund as well. Can one do: FSKAX vs. FZROX? VTSAX and VTI are perhaps in a very, very unique , patented way, actually just different share classes of the same fund at Vanguard...

I am actually thinking of buying PSPTX (PIMCO StocksPLUS Absolute Return) and PSKIX (PIMCO StocksPLUS Unhedged International) too in a Roth IRA. Assuming you believe in PIMCO’s bond active management, I think they should be a safer bet than StocksPLUS funds like PSLDX with only long bonds. On a related note, where would people suggest buying this family of funds? I emailed Ally Invest, and they said these institutional shares aren’t available in IRAs. However, this seems to contradict information I’ve seen elsewhere on Bogleheads, where people say they’ve purchased StocksPLUS funds for a $100 minimum initial investment at Ally. Can anyone confirm based on their own recent experience? I want to know where I should move my IRA to access thes...

From previous postings I read here, it seems that portfolio visualizer is a monthly return and that 3 times a monthly return does not equal 3 times a daily return. Same thing if you leverage spy/TLT using CASHX vs UPRO/TMF. If one were to do this with a margin loan at IB and rebalance it monthly so as not to hit a margin call, using portfolio margin, what would be the problem? What am I missing?

Re: WisdomTree 90/60 US Efficient Core Fund [NTSX] (formerly US Balanced Fund)
Apologies if this has been posted before, but couldn't find it in the thread. It appears NTSX does NOT use S&P500, but (as is stated in the fund prospectus) it uses the 500 largest US cap stocks. As a result, it is sightly different exposure than S&P500, and closer to something like the top 500 of Russell 1000. For example: NTSX owns both SNAP and SNOW, neither of which are in the S&P500, but it doesn't own FOX (among others) which is part of S&P500. There are between 50-100 stocks difference between the two (I don't have the data directly in front of me, but looked at it the other day). How does this impact anyone's view on NTSX? It is more growthy than the S&P500, also with lower profitability factor exposure. It is N...

likely some good points made above. I owned a small bit and it seemed the whole sales pitch of acting like holding bonds to maturity and thus not lose money, would correlate to thus deliver a 25 dollar ( or better )close out price as long as there weren't defaults. Yet, during one of the longer bull runs in history which should be low defaults, this did not happen in the year group I owned that I held through closing.
Then, it seems the whole fund is run by some almost secret system that no one really knows what it is.

We can see this in Simba's spreadsheet. Since 1955: 55/45 UPRO/TYD has the same CAGR and lower stdev and low max-drawdown than UPRO/TMF. What does the comparison look like from the 1980's to present (after Fed policy change)? What about TMF vs TYD for the worst months of the GFC in 2008 and the Dot.com bubble in the 2000's? I am worried about crashes, specifically. Does TYD hold up as crash insurance? Yes it holds up. At 55/45 it's pretty similar to TMF, a hair better depending on the period chosen. If you don't want/need that much leverage, 45/55 UPRO/TYD is much better than 55/45 UPRO/TMF.. it's just not as much leverage. For people who are keeping separate accounts, it definitely makes sense to increase the size of their HFEA account bu...

tax calculation wise, there is nothing special about "reinvested dividends/capital gains distributions" verse taking the cash, and then making the new purchase in the stock directed manually by yourself with the money you just received.
Either way, the dividend or cap gain distribution the stock made gave you money. that money distribution will show up eventually for tax purposes on your 1099. but Now, you already told the brokerage , hey, if I get money, buy some more immediately "auto reinvest". So it is now simply on that same day, a buy at the price that day. Tax wise, Cost basis and date of purchase are that day, just as if you had bought a different stock with the money.

There are no standards from company to company in length or flex or head design. Buying a golf club and its golf shaft is like buying a medium size sweater. Some sweaters are bigger, and some run smaller even though they are all labelled medium. The same goes with flex labels on golf shafts. One companies senior shaft may just hit different than another companies etc. or more like a regular flex made by another company. perhaps keeping them now is taking higher risk that is usually accepted over a long term investment, but now you are viewing it as a short term investment ?

Re: Another thread on "Which car should I buy?"
Honda and Lexus seem to have some fairly nice warrantees on their certified pre owned used cars.

Re: Why not 100% PSLDX?
"The difference between 2x and 3x leverage can be massive and the margin between an aggressive and a catastrophic amount of leverage is thin. " 1 - So if that is true, why would people suggest anyone use 3x leveraged etfs if they could use something else? Which basically was my point in my first post. "Explain to me again how UPRO/EDV is a worse option? I still don't get it. The daily rebalancing of UPRO helps to limit your losses in a major crash." 2 - So what is the reality that someone wants to have to rebalance their portfolio on a daily basis? Is their anyone who has posted they had a leveraged etf portfolio that they rebalanced it every day? And rebalanced it everyday in March and April of 2020? 3 - In HFEA , and 3...

Re: Why not 100% PSLDX?
Thinking of attempting a DYI with 33% UPRO and 67% EDV. I'm wondering, is increasing duration taking the same kind of risk as leverage? The duration for PSLDX is ~16, so if EDV was ~24, is that the same kind of interest rate risk and expected performance as levering a 16 duration treasury bond by 1.5x? I know PSLDX isn't all treasuries so the risk profile is different in that regard... I know that UPRO behaves differently than 3x margin SP 500. But say I'm aiming for 100% SP 500 and 100% LTT, is the above a decent approximation? Considering the combined ER of EDV/UPRO is .36, vs 1.02 for PSLDX, it seems like a DYI version is optimal, unless maybe UPRO's issues stemming from daily leverage are worth paying a significant amount to avoid? if ...

Re: novice leaving EJ could use advice.
"I have read that EJ trains their team members to inject themselves into client's personal activities and lives, and to 'sell' to friends for their own career advancement. Not very ethical, but like religions that highly encourage social lifes within the 'faith' it serves their interests to make financial separation as emotionally painful as possible. That is what they are really selling, as their financial offering is inferior." I think this is a little over the top vilification. Don't many other sales oriented professions do similar? Is every member of the Rotary etc a philanthropist 100 percent or do sales people see benefits from networking and getting their name and business mentioned. Aren't there other overpriced items in t...
