Re: Should one invest in gold? If so, how and how much?

Gold is not much of an investment, but that doesn’t necessarily mean one shouldn’t hold it. The idea behind gold is that it will, over time, protect your purchasing power. That doesn’t mean that it's likely to return any more than that (short term fluctuations aside), as a true investment might.

How to hold it is the hard part!

I would not fight the Fed. I'd go back, buy multiple properties, and mortgage everything to the hilt. I had the opportunity, but was too responsible, unlike some friends. They had to sweat out 2009 and the prospect of bankruptcy, but are living high in the end. I should probably follow their lead even now, too, but I'm slightly less confident a second bailout will be forthcoming.

Also, be skeptical of anyone who tells you the law is intellectually challenging. This is a great point. The parts of the law that are challenging are usually so because they are dumb laws, poorly conceived, and even more poorly written. It's not often that things are challenging because they're intellectually stimulating. You're so well off financially you can really do what you want. You could always fall back on the current vocation and stay in the top 3% of incomes. An educational dalliance would set you back, but not much. If you could use the law degree to expand upon your current position and perhaps enter consulting, it might be a good move. You might consider going to school part time if that is the case. I had problems answering this until I reversed the question. What do I substitute for other goods and consume more of when times are hard , my income goes down, or relatedly, when inflation is high (like now)? The answer recently has been non-craft beer, blended whiskey (vs. single barrel), chicken, and pork butt (vs. steak/cow). Vacations and travel are closer to home.

Mostly, we don't do a whole lot of substituting and ust cut out things like eating out and giving to charity and otherwise delay purchases as long as possible.

What causes inflation? A lot of people chasing too few goods. If we as a society want to reduce inflation, we must as a society consume less during those times when goods are scarce. I understand it is impossible to cut food, but cuting a recent example, can we make do without eggs when egg prices are skyrocketing due to an outbreak of bird flu? If airline tickets become pricey, do you have to take an overseas vacation? If Apple release a new iPhone or a new gaming device that costs 1k more than your old onw, do you have to buy it? Blaming outside influences is easy. Making personal changes to adapt to such situations is hard. Hmmm. Re: college decision: $63k UIUC ECE or full-ride UF ECE?

Education is big industry designed to make big bucks. In reality, I doubt the product is much different anywhere she goes. This makes the full ride is very difficult to ignore.

My education was expensive, prestigious, and, in retrospect, a waste of good money. But my parents grew up in a time when education was not big business, so when it was time for me to go, they put an outdated and ultimately misplaced importance on a "good" education. That made them the perfect marks for the industry. And at 18, I had no chance of knowing any better.

The reality is that the more recognized school might get her an extra interview or two right out of school. After that, she has to make your own way.

The engine was in great shape even when I sold. Everything else was the problem! I currently follow the maintenance minder on my "new" truck (which means synthetic every 6k miles or so), but have no doubt I could run it at least twice as long. I just like getting under the truck every so often. The idea that frequent oil changes are prevention is a myth, unless perhaps you have a sludge-prone engine, like a Subaru. Not one of us is exactly like you and none of us can answer the question for you. Based on the information in your post, our ordered preferences are vastly different. There's no magic formula that fits everyone and there is no right answer.

Max out both retirement accounts and then everything goes into a joint account. Pre-marriage assets can be kept separately and are treated as such by many states, so long as they are not co-mingled with post-marriage funds.

"Splitting" an account that you fund during marriage is a bad idea and certainly doesn't sound like what a marriage is intended to be. Moreover, it is a fictional notion that a judge will disabuse you of immediately upon your divorce.

Re: Theory Question: Can the stock market (US or total world) grow forever?

Sure, it could go on forever. Long term real increases are a function of economic growth. Economic growth is a function of increases in (useful) production (per capita), which is in part, a function of productivity. Increases in productivity are a function of capital production, or perhaps better said, capital accumulation. As part of the thought experiment process, I think the stock market theoretically has no ceiling so long as economic growth is permitted. Practically speaking, external restraints on capital production and growth, on the one hand, and continued inflation (which inflates stock prices, but also reduces useful productivity), on the other, will erode productivity gains and could do so until the stock market reaches an effect...

My questions I would ask the mechanic are:

1. Will the rebuilt transmission resolve the OEM issue?

3. Are there any red flags about the rest of the vehicle?
4. What would you do?

You don’t say where you are, but you’re probably both overpaid and underpaid. High private sector salaries are reserved for high producers who can deal with some insecurity, work under stress, and make tough decisions. If you don’t work out, you’re replaced. In this sense, you could find a higher salary in the private sector if you’re willing to endure that. Those that are not religious survive because there is no administrative bloat (religious schools might be subsidized by the religious organization, not necessarily suffering from bloat). I bought a friend's family vehicle about 12 years ago (he had it for 5 years) and I think he had some feelings because of family memories associated with it. He isn't a very emotional person, either.

The credits are to sucker you into an otherwise not attractive deal - but it's a gimmick. They still don't make it a good deal.

Why the concern? Working at a donation center is not high risk work and $20 per hour for such work is decent. Having something to do isn’t a terrible thing.

Other than that, this is just a financial choice for your Dad. A new vehicle and an old dog is more important to him than free time, of which he currently has a relative abundance. His alternative is letting nature run the course with the dog and buying a used vehicle. He chose the former.
