Re: When Should TIPS Enter One’s Portfolio?

According to Vanguard:
In the earlier stages of an investor's life cycle, wage increases and higher real-returning assets such as equities can hedge against inflation. But as an investor nears and enters retirement, it becomes much more difficult to add to a portfolio through additional earnings. In these later stages, the risk of inflation becomes pronounced enough to warrant including tools that provide direct inflation protection.
So, basically, in line with target date funds, add some TIPS when your stock allocation goes below 50%.

Re: Form 1116 Foreign Tax Credit Question

I forgot to mention that using form 1116 our tax credit would be only $486 this year. So by claiming the $600 max credit allowed without filing the 1116 we would come out $114 ahead this year. That's why you have to fill out the form 1116. The $300/$600 limits are sort of freebies from complexity for smaller amounts, but don't reflect how the actual credit amount is calculated. The actual foreign tax credit may be less than those because it is actually defined as: Your foreign tax credit cannot be more than your total U.S. tax liability multiplied by a fraction. The numerator of the fraction is your taxable income from sources outside the United States. The denominator is your total taxable income from U.S. and foreign sources. (IRS Public...

I assumed it was going to be equal thirds of domestic stock, international stock, and bonds.

That would be a fine portfolio and has even been recommended by Bill Bernstein in “If You Can”, and Andrew Tobias in “The only Investment Guide You’ll Ever Need.”

But, instead, the recommended third in venture capital and private equity and debt seems more like a pitch for something with a high commission.

It’s not the detergent so much as the amount of it. We solved our etching problem with soft water simply by using less detergent. Forget the pacs, as they are too much. We also use Cascade and Finish, but never more than half (or less) of the recommended amount. No problems getting dishes clean.

Re: Will China stocks stop performing poorly?

“ The reason to avoid China's equity markets can be summarized in one word: dilution.

The best estimates are that the Chinese equity markets dilute their share pools on the order of about 20% per year, so even if the country is growing its GDP and corporate profits at slightly less than 10% pa, they can't keep up on a per-share basis.

This is borne out by the MSCI China index, which since 12/31/92 has had a total return of 1.6% in nominal dollar terms, or less than zero in real terms.

The problem, of course, is that if you're indexing Emerging Markets, there's no way to avoid the country's ~30% weighting in most indexes. ”

It would be in the IRS favor (by $10). But getting that extra $10 is not the purpose of Form 1116. The purpose is to figure out how much of a credit you are actually entitled to. It could be significantly less than $610. There is a limit on the credit. I get hosed out of some of the credit almost every year since my foreign dividends are a relatively high portion of an otherwise low tax liability. The $300/$600 limits are sort of freebies from complexity, but the actual foreign tax credit is defined as: Limit on the Credit Your foreign tax credit cannot be more than your total U.S. tax liability (Form 1040 or 1040-SR, line 12a and Schedule 2 (Form 1040 or 1040-SR), line 2) multiplied by a fraction. I also went to a local Mom-and-Pop pizza place recently and held out a $20 bill in one hand and a Visa card in the other and asked whether they preferred paper or plastic. (This was the owner, not just an average worker bee). I figured there would be a preference for paper if they wanted to avoid the credit card surcharge, or a preference for plastic if they didn't want to get cooties from the paper money. There is no option for "Increase Initial W/D by inflation".
If the "Cashflows" box is set to "Withdraw Fixed Amount", then two boxes below that will be the "Inflation Adjusted" option.

  • Buy some funds (money market, bonds, a stock fund or two)

BTW, I had an iPhone 11 and recently upgraded to the 12, mainly because the 4G reception is so much better on the 12. Apple switched from Intel to Qualcomm modems for the 12, and it makes a huge difference. All the dead spots are gone. Everybody talks about 5G, but improved 4G LTE reception is actually the best reason to upgrade to the 12!
I can second this and happily so! It was a great surprise as we now get a great signal throughout the house, something that had previously been an issue.
You can also turn on WiFi calling under Settings -> Phone if you have good WiFi in your house.
