i'd set a modest budget for the purchase and have the teen do research and present you with ideas. this can be a helpful exercise with learning the value of new vs used, depreciation, impact of certain features on insurance rates, and so forth.

don't even talk about how you will pay for it until you agree on a price. if the salesperson asks how you will pay, just say you haven't decided and you'd like to reach a price before you figure out how to finance it.

i would get a 2% cash back credit card. 2% automatically refunded on all purchases is usually a better deal than "points" or "miles". I don't think that is a true statement for anyone who spends more on airfare a year than they would receive in points since the points act as direct cost displacemen...

if you sit in a chair for work, don't be afraid to spend good money on a chair. many office workers spend 8+ hours a day sitting in a chair, but cheap out on the chair. i have used an Aeron chair the last 10 years, but i'm tempted to upgrade. it's a good chair but i think i could do better.

the best used vehicle purchase i made was a 5 year old SUV for 1/3 the cost of new with around 40k miles on it. i easily sold it 5 years later for price i paid. :beer
