Excellent paper about bonds and the 30-year Bond Bull Market
Hello Bogleheads,
This is an excellent paper from Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
http://knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu/arti ... cleid=2965
It explains bonds and the 30-year bond bull market. How this bull market came about, implications for bond holders if rates do rise and in particular how bond mutual fund holders will be affected.
Written in plain English, very easy to understand.
Merry Christmas to everybody

First Time Selling ETF - how to do?
Hi all, I presently hold VEU (FTSE all World Ex US) and VSS (FTSE all World Small cap Ex US) for my int'l stock exposure. I want to simplify and go all into VXUS (Total int'l), one fund for int'l exposure only. My question: I have always bought ETFs over the years but never sold. How exactly should I be doing that? (I don't want to tinker around trying to time the market in one trading day - just get it done in the shortest possible time) .At what time (of the trading day) should I be doing this? Is 1hr after market opening ok or should I do it later in the trading day? (I'm in Asia and don't want to stay up too late...) .Should I give it just 2 shots (1 for VEU and 1 for VSS) when selling, or do it in several smaller portions (don't think ...

Vanguard Total World (VT) not fully replicates its benchmark
Hello,
I consider buying some VT because of its diversification. In Dec 2011 Vanguard had announced that they will include small-caps and the new benchmark would be FTSE Global All Cap Index. The benchmark index contains over 7'200 stocks but VT so far only 3'800 stocks (as per VG website).
My question: Why doesn't VT fully replicate its benchmark?
Thanks,
MT

How do you say when something is more awesome than awesome? Awesomer? Awesomest?

Sorry for going off-topic but I just had to get this off my chest.

Hello Bogleheads,
Facebook share price at IPO will be $38 and they issue 484.4mio shares which means they will $18.4b. So far so good.
Their market value at IPO is supposedly $104b. How do they calculate that?
The above numbers are from WSJ

Investing boglehead-style in itself is like watching paint dry. Really, what Mr. Bogle said here has been said many many times before, by himself. Actually they could just run a tape of what he said the previous time because it's the same over and over: Assett allocation bonds in years, ignore the noise and stay the course. Done.

Earlier in the year I asked for advise in this forum. It was about my bonus which came in and had to be invested. According to my AA (50/50) it should have gone into TBM but I held onto it. I asked here 'with everybody predicting that stock markets will go up and interest rates go up (and bond funds taking a hit), shouldn't I just put the money into equities?' Bogleheads obviously told me to follow my AA plan. Everybody in the media, on TV, etc was so bullish on stocks. And bonds were only days away from getting slaughtered... Anyway, I held onto the money and bought stocks over the last couple of days. Vietnam doesn't have Visa on arrival, opposed to Thailand or Cambodia. As such the airlines will not even let you board your flight if they don't see the visa sticker in your passport. Lately they have relaxed visas for certain countries, eg. Japan and others. I think this has to do with 'rewarding' certain countries who place a lot of investment dollars in Vietnam. Of course they are shooting themselves in the foot. Because of their strict visa regulations they miss out on a lot of tourists, eg. expats in the region who love to do week-end excursions. If they can't go to Saigon, they go to Bangkok, Singapore or KL instead and spend their dollars there. Also visas are costly so a for a family of 4 it quickly adds up. Actually, the US is not...

Re: Girls Soccer
I'd do just that. Unless your daughter is being bullied, singled out or physically threatened, if it were me I would not say anything to the coach or the other girl's parents. In my experience, there are usually almost always one or two kids like that on every team. Instead of trying to stop their behavior, I think you will get better long term results by working with your daughter to make her less sensitive to their comments. I would view this as an opportunity to build up your daughter's life skills. +1 There is always a kid like that. In sports or even in school gym class. Age 7 or 17. Kids need confidence to have fun playing sports. This can come from praise, but also from instruction and practice. IF they want to be better at their sp...

I think that the right person to talk to is the coach. If he is a good coach he should have observed by now that Miss Little Soccer Player's behavour isn't good for the team spirit and performance.
Talking to her parents may be sensitive.
Also, can't blame Miss Little Soccer Player. She may just be overly motivated... and at 7-year olds still have to learn about how proper teams function, etc.
It's really the coach who needs to sort this out.
How about the other team mates? Do any of them feel like your daughter? If yes, you may want to have another parent join you when talking to the coach.
Good luck!

To me you are like a running back in the Super Bowl with a lead in the 4th Qtr and you have a choice of trying to get a few extra yards or run out of bounds. Don't risk a fumble. Reduce your investment risk, make sure you have enough health, life, home, car, PCAT insurance. I would split the windfall after taxes in half. One half I would want very, very safe. E.g. Federal Government guaranteed. Individual Treasury Bonds, Tips, CDs, Ibonds, Bank MoneyMkt accts, etc. It would be great if you could use your tax advantaged accts for the Treasury bonds, TIPs and CDs. This is your "base". Let it grow but do not add additional funds to it. Come hell or high water th...

Am I missing something? Good point. Here is some industry insight (more from SE Asia but US should be the same): The OTA (online travel agent) claims that they give the booker 'best price guarantee' which means that if the booker sees $100 for a room at website XYZ it is supposed to be the best rate on the internet. Assume someone is single, in their mid-20's with salary of 100k, debt free, and maximizes their 401k. After these 10 years, what should their strategy be? That is, continue investing or something else? 1. They should put as much away as they can. Difficult to put in a number. Also, they should not forget to live a decent life and enjoy their 20s. Finding the right balance is key. Sock a lot of money away and as a reward treat yourself every now and then. Every day the Munchkin Man would make at least two trips down to that soda machine to buy some Diet Cokes. When the Munchkin Man...

Are there any Bogleheads left on this forum? :D Indeed. Isn't it fun how we sometimes debate how to slice and dice, small-cap value, Reits or not, how much int'l and whether to overweight EM or not... we love to tinker around in up-markets. Trying to construct the perfect portfolio. Add a little here, add a little there... I myself was thinking whether and when I should take my VTI and VEU and put into VXUS (VG total int'l) to streamline, etc. This is all peanuts and so trivial at the end of the day. This all becomes irrelevant when the markets go down south. The speed of this sell-off is breath-taking. Give it 2 more bad days this week and we can easily be down 30%. I'm out of here. Saigon at night - I'm in need of a BIG drink now. MT

Re: Have I purchased too early?
I had some cash that I've accumulated for about 6 months and decided to invest in VSS (Vanguard FTSE All Wld Ex USSml Cap) 2 weeks ago. This was a week before the deadline for the debt ceiling. I thought about holding off the purchase for a bit just in case the market plunges and I can get a bargain, but then remembered what the posts here mention about market timing and decided to just do it. I'm investing for the long-term so these huge drops in the market shouldn't bother me. But I'm just a bit disappointed that I've purchased it at a somewhat high price. I know I'm missing some kinda logic here in my thinking (I also know that none of us could predict the future), but I'm kicking myself at missing this huge bargain of an opportunity. A...

Hi guys,JDInvestor wrote:U.S. futures are bright green right now. Who knows.kerplunk wrote:It's all a crapshoot.
I'm tired of seeing the color red.
just saw this on the internet: Dow Futures sore 311 points. I think the correction is over, markets were clearly oversold and as per some analysts I saw on TV we will be seeing the 2011 highs again soon.
Now that things are looking brighter again on the stock side, I worry about my bonds. When do you guys think will the bond bubble burst? I really worry about my bonds.

Excellent risk tolerance: What's your AA? 100% stocks? I saw your signature and recognize only 1 or 2 tickers.kerplunk wrote:I'm down 11.27% total since August 1st. Small cap stocks apparently don't particularly like bad economic news, haha. In my short investing career, I have seen far more red days than green days. Not how I would have preferred to started, but it is what it is.
For most young people my age, green days mean another thing, although I prefer my definition.
One good thing about this volatile time is that I have realized that I have excellent risk tolerance so far.
