Re: [Boglehead vs Mr Money Mustache philosophies]
Hi Victoria, I agree that the best of the MMM movement is to wake up the average consumer to realize that spending is a choice and that there are alternatives to building a nest egg or even that one can build a nest egg. I used to teach and was always amazed at how "programmed" my students...

Re: [Boglehead vs Mr Money Mustache philosophies]
Hi Victoria, - The MMM movement is named for MMM. - MMM's major accomplishments are (1) very frugal living and (2) retiring very early (Me: not he's not, he has a few small businesses) . - THUS, the defining characteristic of the MMMers is very frugal living (and for some, very early retirement). - ...

Re: [Boglehead vs Mr Money Mustache philosophies]
As for the solar panels and electric cars, I think you would purchase them while still working, in preparation for retirement. Alternatively, you don't need to take out exactly 4% SWR every year. In year-1 you may take out 5% and invest in environmental efficiencies. In year-2, 3, etc., your annual...

Re: [Boglehead vs Mr Money Mustache philosophies]
Here's a post by MMM, on reducing one's carbon footprint via smaller living: http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2016/03/20/climate-change-footprint/ I'm not sure someone who is "retired" on 4% SWR of $500,000 at 30-35 can afford to purchase solar panels, or an electric car. or subscribe to a w...

Re: [Boglehead vs Mr Money Mustache philosophies]
Some years ago, we were discussing that the gains in productivity will enable people to work less and have more time for self-actualization. I think MMM and his followers are implementing this vision. I think Victoria is correct that MMM's followers are implementing this vision to quit work at 30-3...

Re: [Boglehead vs Mr Money Mustache philosophies]
If we all retired at 30 and lived off very modest poverty-level income, the laws would catch up. Perhaps, 30-year old retired people would be required to do some public service. Athletic ones would do some of their exercise by building roads. Intellectual ones would flesh out their ideas by teachin...

Re: [Boglehead vs Mr Money Mustache philosophies]
You cannot live on 25k for a family of three and be able to afford full health insurance without subsidies or fund a college education. You can opt out of insurance or not pay for your kids education which is a huge risk and a bad idea for most people. This is one of my biggest questions in the MMM...

Re: [Boglehead vs Mr Money Mustache philosophies]
MMM's earlier blog posts challenged readers to realize where they were on the hedonic treadmill and gave them ideas to get off of it. Now that MMM has made a lot of money off of the blog (through advertising, if I'm not mistaken), his posts now tend to explain why he's spending more money or acquiri...

Re: Roof shingles do not match - Neighbor sent notice
Not sure this would work, but when I replaced some cement roof tiles on a house, the new tiles did not match. I brought an old tile into a paint store and got matching paint to paint the new tiles. They matched and look good for several years until I sold the house.

If dating you, her work, and her school doesn't fulfill her, and only shopping/buying stuff does, why are you with her? She needs to figure herself out and I don't think you are helping her at all; you are enabling her instead.

Sold big high-maintenance house and the proceeds paid for smaller easy-care retirement home. No mortgage and with healthy portfolio, work is now optional. Two-comma club several years ago, never paid much attention, but hit personal number earlier this year (50-times annual expenses in liquid assets...

Re: Are Single Premium Annuities a good deal?
What i don't see as part of this discussion is that peoples' cognitive abilities to manage their money generally starts to decline in their 70s. They may not even realize it. I think this factor needs to be considered. Annuitization may help protect income in this case. The costs of annuitization ne...

Re: If you have ACA health insurance, what is your experien
Another "pro" vote for ACA. When my full-time job was eliminated, I could stay part-time and purchase ACA insurance. I got most of my doctors in the new network for roughly the same price I was paying for premiums with group insurance through work. With a pre-existing condition (cancer), I...

Re: Mr. Money Mustache: Hero or Foolish?
Everyone says we need to all be consumers to keep our economy going, but what if we could all just have less stuff, all work less, and all be happier, have more time with our families and strengthen our local communities. I think this would actually make people less happy, but that's another discus...

Re: Mr. Money Mustache: Hero or Foolish?
I would like to hear from Mr. MM's fans, if some are still following this thread - and remember, I am one of his fans to a large degree. If prosperity changes your Mr. Money Mustache, will you still love him? I'm not quite sure why you seem to betting on MMM failing, but my thoughts are that he has...
