Re: Duplicating a AUM account?
It is difficult for me to do my own 3 fund or similar portfolio. I am just always second guessing myself. I have 2 AUM accounts with different brokerages. I am wondering what your opinion is of opening my own investment account and just duplicating what one of the brokerages are invested in thereby giving me more confidence but saving the 1% fee? The three fund portfolio (total stock market, total international`and bond) provides a wide range 0f market exposure at a very low cost. Please list what funds you now hold plus their expense ratios. How much are the advisor fees? I am wondering what your opinion is of opening my own investment account and just duplicating what one of the brokerages are invested in Sounds like a very bad idea! I have had about $25k sitting in my Fidelity IRA account for the last 10 years doing nothing. I've missed one of the most productive times in the markets history because of life circumstances and lack of know how. First thing is to expand your knowledge on good investing principles. https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Getting_started For the last year with interest rates up I have had it sitting in a high interest rate (almost 5%) money market fund but with inflation slowing and the potential for a strong 2024 - I feel like its time to invest. LaramieWind, the behavior you've displayed is a good indicator that your AA is higher than your risk tolerance. Since you have a lot saved up you are in good shape except that you aren't comfortable with 50/50, and you have nothing in your Roth. My suggestion would be to fund the Roth and move to 40/60, and don't look at the market every day. I didn't contact EJ. I went through the online flow with Vanguard to initiate the transfer.
I downloaded all of my EJ details beforehand as I heard they disable online access when a person transfers out.

Welcome to Bogleheads (named after John Bogle). I don't see any advantage to paying an advisor for recommendations, but I am curious as to what he is advising/suggesting. Is he watching fund fees? Welcome bmurph,
Yes, you can get good recommendations here, but now that you are here, it would be far better if you spent a little time learning about investing on your own. At the very least, learn about costs and the simple 3-fund portfolio. You need to know these things because it's your money, and you don't want to pay for someone else's retirement.

This is just a way for an "advisor" to get his foot in the door. I don't see any benefit. Such a strategy would require constant tweaking. Using index funds is a much better choice. There is a fee of 0.4% for managing this SMA. I am tempted to put a part of our cash into direct indexing. In my situation, I don’t really see any drawbacks.

Re: Bad mental math on portfolio or make sense?
When looking at the risk of company stock -- If the company stock went to zero, you would lose 20% of your stock holdings, not 11%.Say I have $800k in my 3 fund and $200k in company stock. I could look at it as 20% of portfolio in company stock or $100k in company stock after taxes (round numbers for thought exercise), which would only be 11%.

Re: Which portfolio is right for us?
ZOOM, 60/40 means 60% stock (the first number is always stock). Here is some performance information on a 60/40 portfolio-- http://www.lazyportfolioetf.com/allocation/stocks-bonds-40-60/ Roth advantages https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/investing/5-of-the-best-benefits-of-a-roth-ira It's best to put assets with higher expected returns (stocks) in a Roth (when possible). Your transfer needs to be initiated by the receiving company. You can keep EJ out of it. Here's a nice tax-managed balanced fund from Vanguard that might be helpful for your taxable account-- It is 47% stock. You can adjust the remainder of your portfolio to get the overall stock/bond allocation you want. https://personal.vanguard.com/us/funds/prospectus?FundId=0103&Fun...

Re: Where do I start?
Welcome to the Bogleheads' forum. Edward Jones is one of the most costly ways to invest, and you should move out. How did you happen to check-in to Bogleheads?
Take your time and develop an understanding of how to invest with very low costs. Transfers of money are initiated by the receiving company, not EJ.
Continue to ramp up on the learning scale (develop a plan) before making any changes.

Lady, I would say 30% stock is quite reasonable when discussing, or fearing, risk, but just to be sure, please list your current holding--stock funds and bond funds, etc, and what kinds of accounts they are in. Panicking is never a good way to make decisions.

Re: Rebalancing in my IRA???
Hi folks, Very simple question about rebalancing in my traditional IRA as most of this is Greek to me. I have all bond funds and REIT in my IRA. I'm looking to rebalance (sell some bonds, buy some stocks) and I wanted to do it in my IRA instead of my brokerage account to avoid taxes. However, I don't have any stock funds currently in my IRA into which I can rebalance. Meaning, I'm thinking I can't sell some of my IRA bonds and buy stock funds that aren't already in there. Am I right? thanks, Hi Creeny, just a little note to correct your use of "rebalancing." See this link. Don't worry, it's a fairly common mistake for new investors. https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Rebalancing Also, you are holding a REIT fund, is it VNQ? VNQ is a...

Re: Starting an IRA [running out of time in life]
E.K.S., Your main problem is you don't have a plan, and that's due to a lack of knowledge on how to invest. The good news is you've come to the right place to learn about low cost, efficient investing. Here is a link to the Bogleheads' investment philosophy. https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Bogleheads%C2%AE_investment_philosophy Our wiki has a lot of information, so spend some time learning, and then you will be able to create a plan with confidence. Re: SQQQ help
Welcome to Bogleheads, Shane. How did you find us? Bogleheads does offer an excellent investing strategy, but we would never recommend something like SQQQ because it's extremely risky and doesn't offer good long term results.
I highly recommend you learn our strategy. Here is some data on SQQQ historical performance--

Re: Breaking up with a financial advisor
Brooke, just tell your advisor/friend that you have studied up on investing and you are going to do it yourself from now on. Thank him for his his help and move on. Don't get into any further discussion. 1.7% is a very high ongoing fee for any advisor, especially one you have connections with.

Re: portfolio advice
Sid, you have been schmoozed. In exchange for your money you have been given an unnecessarily complicated portfolio that ends up yielding less than the simple 3-fund portfolio--and that's before paying a fee for the smoke and mirrors. Of course advisors must overwhelm you with a complex portfolio so you think you are really getting something for the money. If the advisor had provided a straight forward 3-fund portfolio you would have said, "Heck, I could do that myself!"

Re: New here - moving to Vanguard from RJ - please help!
Welcome to the forum Hi all! I am almost 40 and slower to catch on to the benefits of managing my own money. Over the past several years, my husband and I have been mulling it over, and I am finally pulling the trigger to move our portfolio from Raymond James to Vanguard. The in-kind transfer is in the works, but I just need a little guidance on what my portfolio should look like once it's all moved into Vanguard. We currently hold VFIAX in our RJ portfolio (yes I am smacking my forehead on this), so I plan to leave that alone for now. What else would you recommend in order to balance the portfolio? As mentioned above, the 3-fund portfolio provides broad coverage at a very low price. Our wiki is loaded with lots of good information... http...
