"Governing Board Approves 20 Percent Increase to TSP Budget"

The board that oversees federal employees’ 401(k)-style retirement savings plan on Monday approved a $309.7 million budget for the Thrift Savings Plan in fiscal 2018, a 20.4 percent increase over this year.

The ramp-up in anticipated spending comes as officials prepare to take on a massive influx in new participants in the TSP when the military services’ new blended retirement system comes online on Jan. 1. TSP spokeswoman Kim Weaver said she expects between 400,000 and 750,000 people to enroll in the program in 2018, followed by 200,000 to 250,000 in subsequent years. . . .

John Rekenthaler: "The Latest Salvo Against Indexing"

Here's today's John Rekenthaler column on Morningstar: From the Beginning This column is a companion to August's "Are Index Funds Too Soft on CEOs?" That article began in medias res, but unlike a proper epic, it never got around to the beginning. This time I will take the matter in proper linear order, along the way offering additional thoughts, as I have had another month to think through the issue. To start: There will always be arguments against indexing. If passive funds never existed, traditional fund managers would be collecting an additional $40 billion in annual fees (roughly speaking, $5 trillion held by index mutual funds and exchange-traded funds times 0.80% for actively managed funds' expense ratios). When $40 billion ...

Re: How much do you spend on "entertainment"?

Funny you should ask. Usually I don't spend a lot on entertainment. I rarely go out to a movie. Usually, I either stream a television series or a movie on Netflix or Amazon, or I borrow the CD(s) from my library. I rarely go out to eat, because I have severe dietary restrictions. I am going to spend about $800 when I go to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival next month: two plays plus lodging expenses for three days. I'm going with my brother and sister-in-law. She's going to do the driving, but I told her I would reimburse her for gas, which should be minimal, because she has a Toyota Avalon. I forgot to mention that I'm going to see/hear the Oregon Symphony Orchestra play in November. Last year I went to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ju...

Christine Benz: Don't Neglect the Softer Side of Your Estate Plan Document and share your wishes for end-of-life care.

As my family’s "first responder" and resident financial person, I served as power of attorney for my parents, as well as executor and trustee for both. Their estate-planning documents attended to a lot of crucial issues: the distribution of their assets, the trusts that were to be set up upon each of their deaths, and their attitudes toward life-sustaining care. Yet having gone through the process of seeing my parents through their last years and settling their estates, I'm struck by the number of "softer" decisions these documents didn't cover--important topics like their attitudes toward receiving care in their home or in a facility, or whether they'd prefer to die at home or if a hospital was OK. Did I need to split ...

Re: Audio books

Not to change the subject, but some may be interested to find out that the Library of Congress offers a free audio book program to those who are unable to read due to blindness or disability. After I found this out I signed up my 94 year old MIL, who is blind and in a care home. They sent her a device for listening to the recordings and have been very generous with keeping her stocked with listening material. They have virtually every book recorded, so the choices are endless. The client is able to pick and choose which books to receive, and sends them back, postage free when they are done listening. My wife picks out the books for her mother. If you know someone in this situation you may want to pursue signing them up. How does this work?...

I got my first job after I was discharged from the army was at a large downtown Chicago bank (Harris Trust and Savings Bank). Harris had a cafeteria, subsidized, so I ate there nearly every day. My next job was working for a small Chicago bank in Albany Park (Albany Bank and Trust Company).
They too had a subsidized cafeteria, a very small one. I too ate there. My next job was at Santa Monica Bank. They did not have a cafeteria, so I brown-bagged it, unless I was taking someone out to lunch (usually on Friday). Every since then, I have brown-bagged it, except on very rare occasions

It’s an administrative task for the ages.

Medicare is getting ready to issue all 60 million of its beneficiaries new cards with new ID numbers as way to combat identity theft and fraud.

The rollout begins next April, but the agency is already beginning its outreach campaign.

“We want to make this process as easy as possible for everybody involved,” said Seema Verma, the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, on a conference call Thursday.

The agency has set up a web site, is sending out handbooks to all enrollees, and has call centers ready to answer questions from beneficiaries and doctors. . . .

Christine Benz: "Who Should Inherit Your IRA?"

Deciding who you want to inherit your IRA is straightforward. As with any other asset, the best answer is whoever (or whatever, in the case of charities) is most deserving and would derive the biggest benefit from the money. Yet the logistics leaving IRA assets to loved ones, a trust, estate, or charity can get complicated; Morningstar.com contributor Natalie Choate, an IRA specialist, frequently writes about the mistakes people make when it comes to making IRA beneficiary designations. Thus, before making plans for what will happen to your IRA when you're gone, be sure to understand the tax and other implications. Also double-check that your IRA beneficiary designations are in sync with any other estate-planning documents--trusts and wills...

Activist investing and proxy battles are typically associated with pugilistic hedge fund managers, so a panel of the world's three largest passive investors speaking about shareholder activism at the Morningstar ETF Conference was a sign of changing times. Jon Hale, Morningstar's head of sustainability research, was joined by the heads of stewardship for BlackRock, Vanguard, and State Street Global Advisors. The topic was thrust into the limelight earlier this year when Exxon Mobil's shareholders, including the three asset managers represented on the panel, voted in favor of a resolution calling for climate-related disclosures. That is my situation.

That's been my experience as well. I retired in January 2014. My portfolio has increased in size. I haven't withdrawn from Vanguard Roth, but I am taking my RMDs from my TSP G Fund and living on a small FERS pension and Social Security.
