Backdoor Roth and TIRA transfer
My wife is a physician and I’m a stay-at-home dad and we both have a rollover Traditional IRA and a Roth. I want to do a Backdoor Roth for my wife’s account and think I have it figured out after reading the thefinancebuff.com article but would like confirmation. Her 401(k) is administered by Wells Fargo and offers some pretty good funds that we already invest in (VINIX, VMCIX and VSCIX) and they will accept a transfer from an TIRA. If I understand it correctly, all I need to do is transfer her TIRA from Vanguard into her Wells Fargo 401(k), then make a non-deductible contribution to a TIRA and covert it to a Roth. Both of our TIRAs have around $40K each. I think the backdoor Roth is a great option for her but since I don't have a paying job...

Are there any other Bogleheads going to St. Paul for the Frozen Four? I can't make it to the semifinal games but have tickets for the National Championship game.

And now this: The end of a new phone every two years. Verizon officials have confirmed what SmartMoney was told by Verizon sales reps at a number of stores around the country: The company is ending its popular "New Every Two" program , which offers Verizon subscribers a credit of $30 to $100 toward a new phone every two years. As of Jan. 16, the company will stop offering the credit to new customers and won't re-enroll current customers in the program after their next New Every Two upgrade. The cell carrier is also putting the brakes on its permissive early upgrade policy, store representatives confirmed. All of this adds up to more out-of-pocket costs for Verizon customers. With the New Every Two perk, a longtime customer with a...

We have a $1MM umbrella that costs us $105/yr. We bought it as soon as my wife was accepted into medical school and had a negative net worth at that time.
FWIW, when we moved this summer and I was shopping for new insurance, the premium for $1MM varied from $72/yr to $236/yr depending upon the company.

Quicken and rebalancing transactions
This is probably a stupid question but I'll ask anyway.
I recently rebalanced my portfolio (Rollover IRA & Roth) and am wondering about the best way to manually record the transactions in Quicken. I assume simple sell/buy transactions are the easiest. Is there a better way to do it or doesn't it really matter?

Groundfog, I don't have an umbrella policy … as an intern with relatively low income, few assets, and significantly negative net worth, do you think I should have one at this time? I was planning on waiting until I finished training. You should consider obtaining an umbrella policy, if only for the fact that if you do get sued and lose, your future earnings potential could be brought into consideration of the judgement award. Has no money now, will obtain it at some point in the relatively near future, $$$$. If the cost of policy is low enough, would consider its cost as" peace of mind". Congrats on finishing medical school with such little debt. My wife finished with around $160K and some of her fellow residents had over $250K!!...

There was one in our neighborhood a few weeks ago and I chatted with him for a while. I let him know that I was a Boglehead and had everything with Vanguard. He gave me his spiel and some brochures and went on his way. He's been pretty persistent and has called a few times but has been very respectful. I did feel kind of sorry for him though. Going door-to-door in a suit on a 90+ degree day can't be much fun.livesoft wrote:An EJ rep trolled our neighborhood 2 weeks ago and then sent thank-you notes to everyone she talked to.

you always have to factor in quality of life. many would simply refuse to live in Plano, Texas at any cost, it's such a culturally-deprived location. once you've lived in NY or SoCal, it's torture to have to live almost anywhere else. and people don't just live in NY for opportunity, they live there because it's the greatest city on the planet, and you can experience things that most Americans can't even dream of. sure there are a few good values across the country, but I think this is just another "efficient market". there's a reason why the blue and red states are priced differently. The greatest city to whom? It's near-sighted to assume your locale is the 'best place' to live. Many would argue that the high cost of living, the...

Physicians, unlike business or legal professionals, have an interesting quandary with respect to choosing a location in which to practice. For business or legal professionals, your location will play a great role in determining your salary, future earning potential, etc. With medicine, it appears that physicians are actually better off living in a smaller to medium sized city than live in a place like NYC or LA. I've always found it odd that physicians don't appear to be compensated for the higher cost of living like other professionals are. If I were going into medicine, there's no question I'd set up shop in a low cost of living city. I couldn't agree more. It also depends on the specialty. My wife is currently a Family Medicine resident...

Welcome, I appreciate your post because I'm in the same boat .There are so many smart people with great ideas that they so willing share, I often have trouble figuring out which of the wise courses of action is best for me. For example, today I read much of David Swensen's fantastic "Unconventional Success". He is a genius. Before that, I thought Paul Merriman at FundAdvice had it all figured out. Earlier, it seemed that Dr. Steven Evanson (Evanson Asset Management) made perfect sense when he said that simply identifying the "ten major asset classes" and then buying them in equal percentages through DFA was the Answer. In the meantime, I'm sticking with Vanguard's Total Stock Market and Total International. I figure som...

Thank you PiperWarrior, YDNAL and Tramper Al for all of the advice and suggestions. Hopefully I've devised a pretty good plan based on your inputs. I opened accounts with Vanguard last Friday and the CSR figured the money would be in the account by the end of this week. The balance of my wife's rollover IRA is $2,500 so it looks like my only option is the STAR fund. _______________________________ Here's my plan right now. I decided to go with YDNAL's suggestion of PTRAX for my bond allocation. His Rollover 58.1% VTSMX - Total Stock Market Index His Roth 24.8% VGTSX - Total International Stock Market Index Her Roth 6.8% VEXMX - Extended Market Index Her Rollover 4% VGSTX - Vanguard STAR Her 403(b) - Will rollover to Vanguard in July 2010 6....
