Re: Technivorm Moccamaster KBTS coffee machine

I'll be curious to hear how you like the Moccamaster vs the Zojirushi. I've had my eye on them over time, but I've been using the Zojirushi for about 8 years and really am very happy with it. It's one of the few other brands that brews at the proper temperature. And, I like having the timing feature that the Moccamaster doesn't have. Of course, that means I have to grind my beans the night before. Seems a shame to go through the effort of getting a brewer that brews at the correct temperature, and then spoiling all that by feeding it stale coffee... Does the coffee become stale just from being exposed overnight? For me grinding in the morning is not really an option, the entire family is still asleep. Nothing louder than a coffee grinder! ...

Re: Holy moly my credit score dropped like a rock!!

I value a high credit score. Bogleheads talk about "opportunity cost" and "dry powder", those are usually associated with having cash available to pounce on a good deal or a market downturn. A good credit scores allows access to the best credit deals, such as low APR loans or 0% credit cards. For example our mortgage is a paltry 2.5% - no way we would have it without a stellar score! That mortgage is essentially free now. Anyway, I also play the 0% CC games occasionally. It is true that carrying a balance on those cards may seem "free" but credit score is certainly impacted with a high balance. Even worse is being late on a payment, no matter how small. I was once suckered into applying for a department store C...

I did this with my son yesterday. Went in with cashier's checks for the $15k. Turns out it's not enough to show the banker the BH thread or Doctorofcredit article  One must actually have a personalized 16-digit offer code! Clicking all the links right there in the bank didn't generate the offer for me. Finally found this one: https://frequentmiler.com/chase-earn-900-with-a-new-checking-and-savings-account/ Note: You must open the link in an incognito tab! A) Making large financial deals with family. B) Trying to find ways to get around the obvious intent and wording of the tax credit to trick the IRS Yeah, I see no ways this could backfire…. I am not asking for anything illegal. IRS/Congress allows many things that should be seemingly illegal. E.g. Mega backdoor ROTH or backdoor ROTH. Law was not implemented to allow it. But it is legal to do. Based on the input so far this seem similar (I know none of the replies are legal opinions). There are many such tax workarounds that people use - especially businesses. Doesn't necessarily backfire. Agree with this. We all use whatever paths are open to us. Does anyone here not already claim whatever tax credits & deductions readily availa...

$650 + $150

I always got the cash from a "red shirt" person, still plan on doing so - I'll buy a tub of mixed nuts if a purchase is indeed required. This is my way of putting away a little cash, it goes straight into the safe.

There are all kinds of small [abbreviated profanity removed by moderator oldcomputerguy] events where cash may come in handy. When we lived in CA the power went out for 24h, stores were immediately empty and people were fighting at gas stations! A couple years ago we lost power for about two weeks here in TX. Other parts of the country have it much worse. Plan according to the local risk factor and your own comfort level. I try to keep it as $20 bills, hundreds are often not accepted.

Re: Technivorm Moccamaster KBTS coffee machine

Don’t forget the grinder part of the equation, as well as getting good beans. Honestly, the coffee maker matters way, way less. I often use a $10 pour over (V60) with a very nice grinder, and it makes outstanding coffee. If you’re using preground coffee, it’s a waste of money IMO to spend a lot on a coffee maker. If you’re using a ~$100 grinder, such as a Baratza Encore, look into something around the $300-$400 range, such as a Fellow Ode 2 or Lagom Mini. With fresh beans, you’ll taste a noticeable improvement in the cup. I’m not saying you need to spend a lot on coffee, but if you’re going to spend a lot on a coffee maker, invest in a good grinder and fresh beans. Otherwise it’s like putting cheap tires on a Ferrari. Noted. Christmas gift...

I love the drip stop feature on my Mocamaster. I close it when the brew first starts and let the grounds saturate (aka - bloom) and then finish brewing. Technivorm also sells factory reconditioned units at a substantial discount - about $100 less. Mine looked perfect. The only drawback is that they only have a 1 yr warranty vs 5 yrs for retail ones. They always show out of stock on their website but if you call there's a good chance they have some available. Wish I had known that! I'd have no problem with a used unit from the factory. Thanks to the BH enablers I guess I'll be buying a 'real' burr grinder as well :? I currently have a Cuisinart originally purchased from Costco but per online reviews a proper burr grinder is better. Well if it's good coffee I indeed drink it black. I only add cream if it's bad coffee (eg. $tarbucks) I swear they must know something about coffee in Europe. Even the guys peddling coffee at subway stations know what they're doing! I don't think I've had a bad cup.

In the USA bad coffee is everywhere, notably gas stations and 7-11. And I see they're all using Bunn coffee machines, what are they doing wrong? :(

Shockingly enough, McDonald's has possibly the best "value" coffee from all the bad options. Locally it's $0.60 including tax for a "senior coffee" (ie. small) It's about 50% discount. That's my frugal BH tip of the day!

Ended up installing it myself with help from friends. Decided against pavers and just built a deck instead. Cost breakdown: - $11k for the hot tub w/ tax & delivery - $2k for the deck (also DIY) - $1k for electrical wiring, new panel, conduit - $500 for gravel to create the foundation and also some rock under the deck - Also added a separate 110v outlet and a water spigot near the tub, both for maintenance Went with the compressed gravel 'pad' per recommendation from the sales guys - concrete is of course preferred but the downside is lack of drainage. The gravel is considered completely adequate and is simple to install & level. Electrical: - 60A breaker at the feed - 6ga wire - 100ft - 50A "spa panel" from Home Depot - Y...

The chase deposit problem has nothing to do with the offer. My son had his account frozen due to suspected fraud and he was trying to pull money out, not put it in. Chase is as good or bad as wells Fargo or bofa for example. Well, if they truly suspect fraud; they need to call the account holder, close the account, open up another account for the account holder and establish a safe word for the account. That’s what NFCU did on 2 occasions for us when they truly suspected fraud. And that was similarly done at Chase credit too for us. My recent experiences with PNC, Wells, Capital One against my limited experience with Chase Bank is that Chase appears pretty messed up. Indeed they should! We have several threads with Chase problems, they're ...

No, it doesn't prove a thing. Some people just want to avoid a real direct deposit and try shortcuts.

I'm planning on doing it this week:

Re: Roomiest 3rd row SUV

Just some quick stats. Your minivan has 164.4 ft3 of passenger space, plus 39.1 ft3 cargo space past the third row. Generally speaking, what I would call "midsize" SUVs (some would call large) will be smaller on the inside. Like, the Telluride currently has 157.1 ft3 of passenger volume, plus 21 ft3 of cargo space past the third row. Pilot is 158.4/18.6. And so on. A lot of that reduction tends to come in the third row--actually more than you might think because of the different interior shape. So, for example, your minivan has 36.3 inches of third row leg room and 50.3 inches of hip room. The Telluride is 31.4 inches of third row leg room, 43.7 inches of hip room. Pilot is 32.5/44.6. My understanding is that most primary home mortgages (which were the ones with 2.5% rates last year) require you to occupy the property as your [primary residence. If you decide to rent it out then it won't qualify as your primary home and thus the mortgage company may have a right to call the loan. If I have to move I'm holding my 2.5% mortgage. Would rent out my existing house to someone, and rent a home from someone at the new location. It's unfortunate that these rates are hitting the housing supply side. Fewer homes, more money for them. It depends on what the documents say. My last mortgage said it had to be my primary residence for 1 year. Never heard of this actually happening. Re: balancing savings and enjoying life

I don't think you should seek to enjoy life until you get to a $500K net worth (or $1M for couples due to divorce risk). That just gets you the very basics of a middle-class life - $300K for a condo, $50K for a car, furniture and emergency fund, and $150K in investments (assume the $150K is acquired relatively early in life so it can compound into a decent supplement to SS). I think it's a big mistake to not be fanatically obsessed with money when you have less than $500K. Above that, the balance should shift (maybe significantly) toward enjoying life. But not before. I think the vast majority of people would be stressed out and throwing away some of the best years of their lives (20s/30s/beyond) if they tried to follow this advice. Agree....

For a tax free backdoor process in 2023 and beyond, you will want to get the pre-tax IRA balance to zero by December 31, so you have plenty of time. Two good ways to do that:

1. Roll over the $3500 into her current 401K, assuming the employer plan allows rollover additions.
2. If not, convert the $3500 to Roth. It will cost you (as lakpr pointed out above) something less than $1120, depending on your tax bracket.

Although I agree you can never count on an inheritance as your financial plan and consider it a "bonus" if it does occurs. My view of inheritances is the money isn't your until it is in your account. True; although some just scrape by with poor infrastructure, schools etc.
And some, like CA, have high taxes and poor infrastructure & schools!

Re: Any way to buy a decent refrigerator these days?

My MIL always buys the "best" fridge and always get the extended warranty. Then that fridge breaks down every couple years and she gets it repaired for "free" while losing $500 in food.

I've found it best not to over think it. When I need a fridge I head over to home depot and buy one of their floor models. I put it in my truck, take it home and move my food from the old fridge to the new one.

Then I haul the old fridge to the nearest dump. Done!

Re: Trip cancellation - what happens to unused plane tickets?

I clicked "cancel trip" in my flight reservation and they would email me a credit. (Did not submit)

Seems like I'll be out the money regardless. Need to think of a way to turn this trip into a mini vacation.

Trip cancellation - what happens to unused plane tickets?

Arranged a personal trip for next month, declined the "trip cancellation insurance." Thought the trip would 100% happen. Things changed, now there is no reason to go. It was $1000 via American Airlines. I've never had a trip get cancelled before, tickets are non-refundable.

Questions:
- Can I get the tickets changed?
- If I simply don't go, do I get to keep a "credit"?
- Can I get a partial refund?

TIA

Re: Bogglehead Advice for Expecting Parents?

Congrats OP! :beer I think you have the important stuff covered already - Skip the Lamaze as someone pointed out. It was a waste of time - things will happen how they happen, no breathing class will help. - Little kids aren't very expensive. Plus they're very portable - just stick them on the plane, in the car... take them everywhere. - Teens are expensive. Food, clothes, cars, car insurance. - Time flies! Our babies are now in college :? - We're making our boys pay 50% of their college expenses. One decided to stay at home and a part-time job easily covers his share. The other wants to move out of state and he may need to take out loans. (We've warned against this.) Note that even a job at Home Depot pays $18+/hr, it's not hard to pull in ...

Re: I make $80,000 a year and drive a JUNKER but on pace to be a millionaire

Those vehicles aren't junkers OP - they're just normal used Japanese cars. Ours are like that now too because we keep them for a while. My own experience: - Buying a high-mileage vehicle used with the intent to "save money" is often a bad tradeoff. It's likely to require much more maintenance (eg. my son bought a Toyota 4Runner with 220k miles, the dealer quoted $12k to fix everything - we didn't do most of it but it has a lot of 'deferred' maintenance items  ) - Buying a luxury car instead of a mid-range Japanse vehicle makes a huge difference. BMW, Mercedes, Audi cost a great deal more to maintain than a Toyota. - Switching cars is expensive. Registration and fresh taxes are the transaction cost that will provide no benefi...

$50.

I get paid, I pay the bills and make sure to leave $50 in there. It's nothing but a conduit for paying bills.

It’s not worth fighting over something like this, unless perhaps there was an extreme financial need, in which case you could make a plea with the other family members.

Minimal? I view it as a little 401k that is cashed out when the kid goes to school. No taxes ever.
I've put in 10k per kid, each account now has 25k. Pretty happy about that!

Now if the kids decides to do something else, fine, but nothing wrong with the account.

Thanks for the tip for T-mobile 'senior' plans

Will definitely be switching once I turn 55 :beer

We're currently on Cricket @ $25/line but they don't offer international texting and no mobile hotspot. It's rather barebones compared to most plans these days.

Re: Chase Ink Unlimited card: $900 bonus after 6k spend

I am somewhat concerned about having a "business" card. I understand that one can be a sole proprietor but will this affect the premium of umbrella insurance. I remember they ask whether I run a business at home when I first got the insurance. When I applied for my Chase Ink card a while ago, Chase contacted me and required proof not just that I operated the business but that it had income (and wanted to know how much) for the previous year, based on my tax return . I only mention in case someone who doesn't have an existing business is applying for a card, and certainly other people's experiences will vary. I was approved for the card once I supplied the information required. I applied with my 'ebay business' in mind and selecte...

Withdraw the funds, keep enough for yourself to cover the penalty and pay it. Then hand daughter a check :beer It will be less than if she had used it for college but that's nobody's fault.

Re: Fidelity Rewards Visa signature card

FYI many other banks also use a 3rd party for their credit cards - that's particularly true of Credit Unions. They can't be bothered with the details so the card is outsourced. Still gets branded with your local bank and any rewards flow into your own account, you use your normal login, but customer service may be with a different company. No need to even think about it.
