I wonder if there is room for some shorter term bond fund to complement the Vanguard Total Bond Market and Vanguard TIPS. Though, I suspect that this role is adequately filled by the Stable Value Fund.

I did find something of interest in the paper. When taxes are accounted for, if I recall correctly, the outperformance of Vanguard's actively managed funds disappears. Something to be aware of especially if the majority of one's assets are in taxable accounts.

And as far as using the cash value for retirement, a withdrawal beyond your cost basis (total premiums) is taxed as ordinary income. You can't withdraw any of the "gains" (haha) without getting nailed. Also, the withdrawal will drop your account value which will increase your future insurance costs...
