Re: Retiree Portfolio Model

I am setting up as someone already in retirement. Have two questions. 1. Do RMD's (or other withdrawals) from 3 accounts flow automatically to my taxable account or do a have to manually do that. 2. I have, perhaps, a niche issue. I have a 403b with RMDs. The amount I presently take out is not taxable. I have marked it as a Roth in the model so it shows as non-taxable, but it is not a Roth and I would like to track the RMD's but not add the amount to taxes owed. Is there a better way to do this? Anyone else dealing with this issue and can comment. Thanks, BigFoot48 for all the efforts! Yes, all of the various investment account withdrawals go into taxable account and expenses including taxes come out of that account, Study the Details page...

Re: Retiree Portfolio Model

My issue is I also have an inherited IRA. I inherited it in 2022 and started taking distributions in 2023. Where do I put this inherited IRA? Is the 2 column only for spouses? Because I am single. I think that was yesterday's problem, I put it in Column 2 and then it didn't appear in the results. The starting date on the Inherited IRA is 2023 when I was 57 and is subject to the 10 year rule. Where do I input the second inheritance, an inherited IRA 10 year IRA if column 1 is already used for the cash inheritance? I am working on an update that will allow previously inherited IRAs income to be included in first year income. In the meantime if one of the IRA income settings won't work for your situation you could use one of the Other Income ...

Re: Setup inputs for the RPM model and tax adjustments

All, I am new to RPM, it is a great resource indeed. I am having a lot of issues trying to understand why the earnings on my Taxable Account, IRA and Roth IRA are appearing as taxable income in the "Details Tab". I am not withdrawing any funds from these accounts. My taxes are over calculated. Even in the Setup data that comes with RPM 24.0, why is the Taxable Account giving income of $100,000 giving an income of $5,000 which is the total earning on the fund. I understand there might be some dividends and Interest, but not the whole $5,000. Any help or instructions on this setup page or the Modeling Options would be a great help. Also, is there any YouTube, PDF or some details instructions on using the Setup Tab for the RPM model...

Re: Retiree Portfolio Model

I love this spreadsheet and I am really digging into it for our specific needs to optimize Roth conversions. I am having trouble with LTCG and state taxes. Details line 206 (LTCG user added) is added to line 182 which in turn adds to line 219. Line 219 subtracts a few items out - but not LTCG. State AGI (line 226) adds 219 and 222 (LTCG user added + calculated). So it looks like user added LTCG gets added twice to State AGI. I can't see that this happens on Federal. Am I missing something (always a very good possibility) or is this a bug? Again, I appreciate all the work that has gone into this. I'm glad you like the model and thanks for the report. Taxes are a bit confusing and the model might benefit from a few additional lines showing w...

That's a good observation and idea. There are only a few (so far) of these 40 year input lines so a new page may be mostly empty and also confusing. Having the input cells next to the calculated cells like now may be an advantage. I'll think about that and see if any other users have comments. Thanks.

Idea: maybe having button on Details to hide all other lines unrelated to the manual input lines, thus reducing distractions.

Well, I should have but taxes have never been an issue for me as most of my investments are in an IRA. But in this case with the fund being in Taxable I should have checked the gain, which was significant, before selling it. Lesson learned. Rebalancing and Tax Surprise

I just finished my 96-year old mother-in-law's Federal tax return and got an expensive lesson that some Bogleheads may benefit from (most will likely already know it). I did the RMD for her IRA and ours in November. Her IRA at this stage in her life is relatively small, about $200,000, and consisted of a single stock fund. After doing the RMD I looked at her portfolio stock and bond allocation and saw that her portfolio stock ratio was a little higher than the 35% I keep hers (and ours) ratio at, so I decided to sell about $80,000 of her Vanguard Total Stock Market fund (VTI) and invest it in Vanguard Total Bond Market. I had also sold $20,000 of this fund in July. All well and good until I get her 1099-B and see that the sales resulted in ...

I retired in 1998 and immediately had to invest my pension. I ended up in 19 investments which by 2002 hit the peak of 29. It was about that year that I discovered the Morningstar Vanguard Diehards site and Taylor. After many foolish investments I finally had a resource for lower-risk investing. However, there were three references that might be of concern. I also found the same error message in the "Name Manger." The names "Options" "Taxable_LTCG_Adj_Base" and "Taxes_Start." Not sure if there is a separate help thread or I should ask in a separate thread but I'm having trouble making the spreadsheet spit out believable results. For one thing when it estimates my taxes for this year around K262, my AGI is way higher than expected: - because I'm modeling more years of contribution, it's using my current income to calculate my AGI, not taking into account the fact that I am contributing to a 401(k) and my wife to a pre-tax spousal IRA. I had expected IRA contributions to be removed from my AGI (an not capped at tIRA levels since it looks like 401(k)s are modeled as IRAs) - it seems to assume the growth in my taxable account is taxable this year, but I invest in low-dividends ETFs like VTI, so I get very little ta...

If there is a way to do this does this same method work from year to year?

Yes there is. The Clear and Copy macros at the top of the Setup page clears all the user input or example entries and load them from a prior model that the user selects. Works very well. The border/lines show/hide macros at the top of each page shows the row numbers.

It appears later version of Excel are having an issue with the macros. I will research adding an "unprotect" to the start of the macros then a "protect" at the end. Update: I see the clear all macro had an unprotect at the start (since the start?) but it was turned off for some reason.
Don't know why this is suddenly an issue after all these years using the same Excel 2013 and users no doubt using new versions with no problems.

Re: Retiree Portfolio Model

I was working on the detail page and looking at the MAGI section. I wanted to clear the entries I entered on row 283 by using the macro. When I clicked on this macro, I had the "run-time error 1004" message appear. It looks like it was pointing to row 282. Should it be row 283? This macro was no big deal because I can easily work around it if my assumption is right. Thanks again in advanced Thanks, the macro bug got me again. Fixed that one and one other on the Detail page and checked all of them. Hopefully all the macros are now up to date and working. Latest version is now 23.4. Users not using the manual entries on the Detail page do not need to update. Download: https://dl.dropbox.com/scl/fi/7y6r9rxfzmsqwgcsom9s7/Retiree-Port...

BigFoot48,

I went to download the refreshed copy and am getting a 404 error at that link.
Apparently all the updating to the file resulted in a new url. Download: https://dl.dropbox.com/scl/fi/annmcxezp ... r1cri&dl=1

Thanks for the quick response. I just downloaded the latest version after noon time today. I did notice the date changed on the Setup page. I am still seeing an error message when I used the "Clear" macro button on the Setup page. Am I missing a step or is it something else.
Thanks again
Oops, it got me again! Okay, I fixed it and ran the macro three times and it cleared everything finally 3 times. Please try it again. It remains 23.3. Thanks for the report. Pat

I also checked all the other major macro buttons and updated those (4 or 5) that were not working or needing an update due to added rows etc. and updated 23.3.

Re: Retiree Portfolio Model

Good evening Bigfoot, Thanks for the changes you made to this latest version. I did notice three issues when I was reloading my data. I was not to sure if it was me or if there was an actual issue. FYI- I am using the latest office product Microsoft 365 The first issue is on the Setup page: Macro button – clear entries When I clicked this button, a "run-time error 1004" message appears, When I clicked the End button on this message, it leads me to the Detail tab. The second issue is on the Setup page: Setup page The 2 new Macro buttons - asset allocations summary page The message next to it displays “Hidden” when it is not (it seems to be there no matter what). When I click hide button the message “Hidden” show up next to the tax...

Re: Retiree Portfolio Model

I'm starting to experiment with RPM, and I'm having a few issues. In the "Ages and Year Factor" section, I see that I can enter IRA 1 (me) and IRA 2 (spouse.) But, under the RMD section, there's room for only one IRA Balance, Age at year end, and withdrawal factor. How does it handle two different IRA? My wife and I are different ages. ------ That section in green is a calculator. Both IRAs will have RMDs calculated and factored based on the data you entered. My wife and I each have a Roth IRA. In the IRA Contributions section, there's only room for one Roth account contribution. ------ Only one Roth balance is provided at this time so multiple Roths must be combined. My wife has an inherited IRA that began distributions when she...

DebiT wrote: Mon Oct 30, 2023 2:24 pm I have a question about how RPM models Social Security income. I'm 66, my FRA is 66 1/2and won't take my own SS until I'm age 70. When I enter my PIA in RPM, and the age I plan to take it, the number RPM gives me is about 15% higher than the number SS shows me I will get at 70. Is RPM showing me in future $$? I'm confused as to why they don't match.
Perhaps SS Admin has changed what they give future recipients in the last few years, but the model assumes the PIA is the amount expected at the Full Retirement Age. That amount is then escalated based on a user supplied annual inflation rate to arrive at the amount to be received when the person starts SS.

Look at cell comments for additional information.

Re: Retiree Portfolio Model

DebiT wrote: Sat Oct 28, 2023 2:00 pm On a separate note, is there anywhere currently in RPM that shows expenses and/or withdrawals as a percentage of current portfolio value? I know there is a "withdrawal rate" in Row 20 of the Results tab, but that is altered for income earned. I would love to see this in the more traditional BH format of simply expenses/withdrawals as a percentage of portfolio value. Just a suggestion.
I will look at adding addition percentages to the Results page. Thanks for the idea.

Re: Roth Withdraw showing taxable?

Error - ? I'm seeing some strange results - not sure if this is an error or what. When I add a withdraw to Section 6 cell E211 (Existing Roth IRAs, Withdraw 1), I see: 1) A larger total federal taxes on the Results Summary Cell E15 2) I also happen to notice that I no longer qualify for ACA subsidies Both of these make me wonder if the E211 is being treated as taxable. thx. - Benny Thanks for reporting this. I will investigate. First finding: Roth withdrawals go into the Taxable account which increases the ending balance for the year and the average balance for the year and thus increased earnings which are taxable. Is that what you are seeing? Note that the Adjusted Gross Income details are normally hidden but can be viewed using a button...
