Yes I don't think you understand tax loss harvesting. It is not a real loss.
Plus you have to opt in to tax loss harvesting so you probably did when you signed up.
I think most of the issues appear to be a lack of understanding. Whether Vanguard ought to have explained it better I don't know. Hard to say but also hard to prove so I'd just move on.

I have two lines with US Mobile in a 7 GB pool. Total cost is just under $33/mo for both. Because my phone has 5G, I get "priority" data, which puts it on par with Verizon prepaid and Xfinity premium service. (Verizon has only two priority levels for the general public.)

Do people still pay for these plans The start plans for verizon are junk. Seriously it is criminal to charge that much and that is even supposed to be some special deal?
The start plans are bottom priority plans. You get no benefit from being with the mothership at all. Literally everywhere else offers more for less on the same verizon network.
eg Visible is owned by verizon and offers pretty much the same unlimited plan for $25 a line. Even comes with unlimited hotspot. Pay just $10 more per line and you get priority data like the big boy plans. No extra taxes.

Re: Rollover from SEP IRA to Self Employed 401K
You are still technically breaking the rules. It is a technicality and unlikely to be challenged but still you are maintaining the Sep IRA in the same tax year as the solo 401k. Doesn't matter if you close it by moving to a rollover or sep IRA or keeping it empty. It is still maintained for that tax year. So if you also had your solo 401k open that year you are maintaining two when you are not allowed to. By restating to a prototype sep IRA you can restate the start date as in go back in time and correct the mistake. You can't do that if you just move it into another IRA. But yes as I say you are not likely to be challenged. And the rule is pretty stupid but it is what it is. And you are at least planning not to keep using the sep ira. At ...

Because they are staying under the annual gift limit. Should they send a letter to the IRS letting them know anyway, despite there being no requirement to do so? The casualness with which some people on BHs will accuse other people of nefarious deeds never stops astonishing me I don't think they were implying anything nefarious but rather emphasizing how trivial the form filling requirements are. Yes sounds to me like you should be paying tax on it too. But I guess it depends on the contracts involved. Is the contract with you or the university? Who owns the work you or the university? Can the university take the funds and use them elsewhere? Can you withdraw the funds for any reason? etc etc. If you can get them to pay you directly for your own use it sounds like you are in control and should be paying tax regardless of where the money goes. I'm surprised the college legal team isn't involved if it is with them.

You cannot have a 5305 sep ira and a solo 401k open at the same time period. It is not just whether you contribute. The IRS guidance even notes that to maintain one does not require contributing. If you want to do it properly without any chance of consequences you would move the 5305 SEP IRA to a protoype SEP IRA first eg at schwab (not sure if they still do them) making sure you indicate on the forms you want to restate from the beginning of the year you opened the solo 401k if possible. That way there is no overlap. You could then roll it over into the solo 401k without consequences. If you skip the protoype step I doubt anyone at the IRS would care but just so you know you aren't doing it right and if someone does question it you are in ...

Re: Indian permanently relocating to the UK from US. Should I find a professional to help me with my investments?
The 401k is fine and will continue under the same treatment when you move to the UK. The brokerage accounts you'll want to make sure that you invest in HMRC reporting funds else the tax treatment can be onerous. The 3 fund portfolio etfs at vanguard are reporting funds VTI, BND and VXUS. Obviously you'll need to be careful with respect to capital gains if that will mean selling anything. And as someone else mentioned vanguard may freeze the account ie no further investments. Schwab is more international friendly. Not sure about fidelity. I suggest you get yourself an ultra mobile paygo sim and set up a us number before you leave for 2fa for banks and brokerages only. https://www.ebay.com/itm/284346097281 https://www.ultramobile.com/paygo/ I...

Re: High Earners in Europe - What do you do for a living (and are there jobs with similar pay as in the US)?
I don't think it is true at all that this just applies to the higher earners. A mail carrier in the us is probably making nearly twice that gross in the uk for example. And they are certainly not taking home more after all the expenses. Europe is probably the same although of course life in Germany is going to be different than say Hungary. Eastern european mcdonalds workers are probably at $5 an hour vs $15 in the USA.
I would say quality of life is probably better though. More work life balance. Less stress. Less pressure. More support if hard times come about. All in general at least.
It is hard to generalise as housing and salaries in California are going to seem crazy compared to Alabama or Germany to Hungary.

A pixel 6a has 5 years of security updates and costs $299. So no an iphone won't last longer these days. Per Google , the 6a is guaranteed to get Android feature updates until July 2025 (3 years from launch) and security updates until July 2027 (5 years from launch). On the iOS side, the standard is 5-7 years from launch for feature updates. Take the iPhone 5S for example - it launched in 2013 and feature updates ended in 2019, but it received security updates (to iOS 12.x) as recently as two months ago, 9 years after launch. Yes good luck with trying to use an iphone that long. After the 3rd battery replacement and the features apple withholds from older phones with each passing year. To the cellular band upgrades you'll be begging. It wi...

What you will find is that most people have no clue. Especially Bogleheads it seems. A pixel 6a has 5 years of security updates and costs $299. So no an iphone won't last longer these days. They also have security features like the titan m2 chip and built in vpn. So security isn't necessarily better on iphones. Though the open system of android means you need to practice safe browsing, only install apps from reliable sources etc. One thing about updates and longevity is that apple loves to deny perfectly good phones the latest software features probably to promote sales eg the iphone Xs is a perfectly capable phone but they won't give it a night camera mode introduced in the 11 series. Re: Devils advocate [The case against a three-fund portfolio]
Basically if you index you won't ever beat the index. Some don't like that. Some people will take the extra risk and do beat the market. Many won't. But you can also take additional risk and still index though eg emerging markets, small value etc. But that is veering off a 3 fund portfolio.
Main issues with the 3 fund portfolio are:
1. Do you need 3? Some say there is no point to international. 2 funds may be all you need.
2. Bonds. Many would say to do ibonds, treasuries etc right now rather than total bond. Which is probably good advice but is leading you away from the 3 fund portfolio.

Re: Currency trading loss goes where on Form 1040?
Since you are not trading forex I'm pretty sure the sch d route is the way to go. The cash is like any other financial asset you hold like stocks and you treat the forex associated with it in the same way - gains/losses sch d.
Generally you treat forex the same as the underlying transaction. Here you are just holding a capital asset (foreign cash) and selling it. So any forex loss is a capital loss.
I believe the accountant is correct in this case.

As others have said you need to consider total return and not worry about dividends vs selling. At the end of the day it is the same result but a dividend heavy fund forces income on you which may be tax disadvantageous. If you don't understand you'll need to do some research Stocks are companies and they either distribute gains or reinvest them. Whether you take the money as dividends or sell some stock it is the same - you are taking the same value out. The most important thing is how risky you want your portfolio. As others have said wellington is 65% stocks and wellesley 35% stocks. Wellesley has lower risk but the lower expected return. You can hold various vanguard mutual funds and sell them without cost. Yes it costs $75 to buy but if you do it rarely it won't matter much. However, you can avoid that fee by setting up an auto investment which will charge $5 instead. You can start and stop it or change it as you please so if you only want to buy once set it up, let it buy and then cancel for example. You can't do auto investment if the MF isn't available on Fidelity's retail side. VNYUX and VMLUX are not. They can be transferred in, held, sold, and I believe dividends can be reinvested, but one cannot otherwise buy additional shares at all, not even with automatic investment. If one tries to research a fund at Fidelity, and gets a "Mutual Fund Symbol not Valid"...

The interior door doesn't even have to be unlocked. Open the garage, drive in the uhaul and close the garage door behind you. No one can see you working at the door and taking what you want when inside.LittleMaggieMae wrote: ↑Sun Oct 02, 2022 10:48 pm
For those wondering WHY having access to the garage would interest thieves - there are lots of people with attached garages who do not lock their interior door to the garage. So, if you get access to the garage - it's easy to just walk into the house.

Just make sure you are allowed to open 2 solo 401ks. I don't know your full situation so can't say if it is okay or not. It isn't usual to have multiple solo 401ks. But perhaps you mean one for yours and one for your spouse's business or something like that.

Re: iPad Mini for Travel (in lieu of Laptop)?
Personally I'd go with a surface go with keyboard. I wouldn't want to be stuck with an ipad as my only device. But my needs may be more demanding.

Re: SPHD instead of bonds
I'd just load up on cash in a high interest account or cds. And have a higher equity allocation as much as you can handle.
But as another has said if you own stocks you own companies that own bonds so are basically owning bonds yourself even if you don't see it.
Some religions cater for their beliefs with special funds that take care of the issues for you. eg Shariah funds You may want to explore these either from your own religion or use one from another that would be acceptable for your own use.

Re: Portable power stations
2nd an ecoflow. A $2000 is probably over the top but ypu can get them around $800-1000 for a good portable one. Ecoflow mini might be enough and portable.

Re: I would like a cheap iphone would it be not wise to buy one with a cracked screen on ebay.
Buying a used smartphone is a security risk. You do not know its history. Not true. Iphones are perfectly safe once reset (erase all content and settings). The phone may have been jailbroken (rooted) and code installed so that a reset does not take you to the initial state. It is also a theoretical risk with a new phone. I'm willing to take that risk with respect to the manufacturing and sales pipeline, but not with a phone purchased on ebay. Just the phone having been jailbroken even without malicious intent is a security risk, and a significant number of users have done that with iPhones. It could be that Apple has deployed changes that ameliorate this risk, but as an example, an innocuous change to a jail broken phone could cause Apple ...

Re: I would like a cheap iphone would it be not wise to buy one with a cracked screen on ebay.
Buying a used smartphone is a security risk. You do not know its history. Not true. Iphones are perfectly safe once reset (erase all content and settings). Else there would be just as much risk of someone buying a new phone and someone in the factory having loaded on something malicious. Please quote any reputable source with an example of a tampered factory reset phone if you disagree. Now you can say there is risk about the history but they are not security risks. These can be minimized with a little effort. Eg did the previous owner use it in the bathroom? Is it stolen etc. Buying from reputable sellers and cleaning them when you get them help with that. Try swappa rather than ebay. I wouldn't buy a cracked one. You can get a refurb tra...
