If you don't have the courage to rebalance during a severe stock market decline and take advantage of buying low, then having Vanguard do it for you can be a great advantage. Only you know if the higher fund of funds ER vs Admiral ER is worth it.

What you have described, can be acheived in just one fund, the LifeStrategy Moderate Growth fund. LifeStrategy Moderate Growth in taxable and Total Bond in tax deferred=30% stocks/70% bonds in only two funds.Personally, I would add Tips to the deferred, for a three fund portfolio.

Roth at 100% LifeStrategy Mod. Growth, would eliminate rebalancing, which takes courage when the market crashes. Less Int., of course. Or 60% Tot. World and 40% Tot. Bnd. is about as simple as it gets and you don't have to try and beat the market with custom asset allocations.

I think a lot of people pick 40%, because it's half way in between Vanguard's Target & Life fund's 30% and the worlds 50% weighting. A lot of retirees have 40% stocks/60% bonds, so 40% Int/60% US keeps things simple.

My IRA is 67% LifeStrategy Moderate Growth & 33% Tips because I don't like Target's Prime, which pays nothing, and low Tips to Tot. Bnd. allocation. I keep my Prime balance low and only to pay bills.

I had my single sister in law roll her 401K into this fund when she retired, at age 70, a year ago. Other than S.S., this is her only pension. I went from the traditional 4 fund 40% stocks/60% bonds portfolio, all Admiral Shares, to 67% lifeStrategy Moderate Growth and 33% Tips/Admiral shares, which retained my desired 40% stocks. There has been millions of pages written on the historical (hysterical) odds against beating the market. An index fund portfolio guarantees you lowest cost and elimination of one of investments greatest risks, manager risk. Two out of three, ain't bad.
