When my DW passed all POD moved as designated, no lawyer(s), no hassles, was all accomplished within 3 days of providing copies (not certified) of the death certificate. That was 3 different Credit Unions and all was accomplished on-line and/or via phone (no brick and mortar available). All current assets are POA, no real estate and car(s) will move to beneficiaries via the state furnished TOD form already completed (just had to be notarized).

So what happened? Probably mute point today. However, you could ask your Realtor to give up some of their Commission. I suppose both Realtors would agree to giving up $500 each to preclude the loss of the commissions if the deal collapsed over this.

Re: Completed tax return but should I wait to file
2020 return is just waiting for IRS to "open the door" (tomorrow?) sitting at FreeTaxUSA self-selected PIN from last year. Never get any stimulus so that does not matter. I can cross check all 1099, etc. so those don't matter. State return already filed at free state site, accepted, and in my state "dashboard". I owe small amounts (I never want to get a refund). Why wait; just one more thing to just forget about for the year.

Why don't the parents just give each son $900,000 now and tell them that is it until Mom and Dad are gone. They can do that without any tax implications (other than a simple tax free IRS Form 670). Sure would "keep it all in the family".

Do not mean to hijack the thread but.....
I want a MacBook Pro but I need to trade in a 2020 MacBook Air (purchased in Mar 20) and Apple does not list that model as being one to trade in. Spoke to Apple (sure it was a contractor) and their response was "give it time and Apple will put it up on the site".
Not sure if my intentions are good ones since my current MBA is an Intel I7, 512, 16. From what I read and this thread indicates the M1 will be faster than the Intel I7. Guess I could sell it for more privately but being 80 yo the ease of a fully Apple transaction appeals to me.

Yes when you have "won the game" and are "older" it makes absolutely (IMO) to "chase rates". She could get 1.20% at NFCU for instance but why do what is required to do that? If you are "risk adverse" and do not need to just stay still and keep it at the best rate you can get locally and convienently.

You have financials and medical fully under control. I can only give you a couple of suggestions: Update and maintain your Rolodex (I know you probably have something else that does the same thing) and stay in touch no matter how long you will take off to work with the kids (you imply about 18 months), also make sure you get an entire copy of your records expecially the clearance information (assume TS+). Same hold true for your spouse as she may have a need should she want to look for work after the military. By the way congratulations to you both for solid and succssful military careers.

80 yo Single Male with $1.25MM in CD's (Course of Action/Inaction)
I will not say this is for a friend because it isn't. I have $600K in CD's maturing in next 8 months or so then the remainder maturing over the next 5 years (remainder is currently earning 3.5% APY). The maturing $600K, if placed into or rolled over to CD's would be at about 1% (assuming interest rates continue to decline). Do not need the money to live on. Annual expenses are $30K to $60K depending on extent of gifts (bare minimum is $30K). Medical care, beyond medicare, is former employer paid for life. Pension, SS, and IRA provides over $70K of annual income. Want to leave at least current savings balance ($1.25MM) for survivore, more wouild be nice but not necessary. Do not anticipate needing nursing home care. Suggestions would be appr...

Re: Why to choose EFT if you can choose free Wire (transfers out of Fidelity)?
An EFT push transaction from Fidelity to an online bank (Ally, Marcus...) would take around 2 business days. If you submit the EFT request early enough in the morning, say before 11:00 or 11:30 Eastern, and if the receiving end is prompt in crediting, the transfer can arrive on the same business day. It did for me to Marcus. At most it takes one business day, not two. If it takes two business days, the delay is caused by the receiving bank, not by Fidelity or the EFT method. Because EFT from Fidelity is plenty fast, I don't use wire unless absolutely necessary. NFCU recently did a ACH transfer in same day. I think there has been some improvement in ACH speed, but understand not all banks and credit unions us it yet. Agree any delays are US...

Action taken today: Turns out Discover CDs were slightly higher than PenFed, so I just opened a 12-month (1.01%) and 18-month (1.05%) CD at Discover in equal amounts to start building a ladder there. There are higher rates elsewhere, but I hold part of cash in Discover HYS, so the money was already there, and I like the UI of their website, compared to many others. I really don't like extending the term out all the way to 18 months, since these monies are part of my rental property reserves, but I'll stretch a tiny bit for the yield. Thanks for all the info in this thread! :beer Kind of "after the fact" but NFCU had 12 month 1.25 APY CD's on the 11th of June (2 days ago; my last purchase). I use 3 CU's and all have CD's in a 5 year Ladder. The ROI for the next approx 4.5 years is 3.09%. Plan is to roll all maturing CD's at these CU's to 12 mo CD's for the time being. 1-1.25% current rates.
Easy to set rollover's automatically via their web-sites (Penfed, NFCU & WPFCU).
If rates go up (doubtful for the next 2 to 3 years) I will make modifications.
I give up jumping around to varions Banks or CU to chase rates. Frankly, I have grown tired of that game.

The way I read it (I have done OH tax personal returns for 14 years) I do not see where the Medicare Premiums are deductible except where they and the other medical expenses EXCEED 7.5% of your Federal AGI. Federal AGI is the starting point for doing OH personal taxes.
