Nothing wrong with that $20 Timex. Holding on for dear life to my paper I Bonds until they start reaching the 30-year mark. Many of them have fixed rates in the 3.0-3.6% range with the resulting great composite rates, so there's no way I'm going to let go of them earlier than required. Since no one made money selling I Bonds, I was a lone voice in the wilderness when I wrote about and recommended those earlier I Bonds and folks who acted on that advice have been reaping the rewards. Re: Any way to buy a decent refrigerator these days?
Nobody I know likes their refrigerator. However, From Consumer Reports When you buy a new refrigerator, you probably expect it to last about a decade. Consumer Reports’ member surveys back up that claim, with 10 years being the median expected life span for a newly purchased refrigerator. But it turns out the odds of having a problem-free experience over that decade are not in your favor. Based on our most recent survey results, we estimate that 41 percent of all refrigerators will break or stop working as well as they used to by the end of the fifth year of ownership, making refrigerators one of the least reliable products we analyze in our surveys. The percentage of refrigerators that break down are higher for side-by-sides (48 percent) ...

Re: Transition Vanguard account now or end of year to keep taxes clean?
It's just not an actual issue, just some extra data entry on tax forms because you'll get more 1099 forms that will take a few minutes to enter (less if you download). It is basic data entry nothing that complicates taxes. I agree. Just do it when you have time to work with the VG a rep to get the job done. All things equal, I would do it now. If you delay until next year, won’t you owe the new VG fees? Git'r done and over with...I did the transition for my taxable, rollover IRA, and Roth accounts just recently and it was relatively painless. Did it entirely online and can't think of any reason to ask for help from a VG rep. I was holding off for a long time, worried about potential glitches in the system, but so far so good. Hope I don't ...

I thought I'd post this since others may be face similar issues. Since the Chase Freedom 5% category this quarter includes Internet services, I went into Spectrum's account manager to update my Auto Pay method to the Chase Freedom card. I ran smack dab into an issue with their website in doing so: It had saved my Chase Freedom card information from when I used it a few years ago and the website would NOT let me update the expiration date. My current Chase card has the same number, but a new expiration date. I tried entering in the card number with the new expiration date and hitting save in the Auto Pay manager screen. It went right back to the expired date. I tried deleting Auto Pay and setting it up again: right back to the expired date....

As indicated in at least one other post, the forms that you have received are consistent with a Vanguard mutual funds only account having been converted to a Vanguard Brokerage Services (VBS) account during the year. The fact that distributions of the Wellington fund appears on two sets of forms and the distributions of the STAR fund appears on only one indicates that the conversion to VBS was done after 03/20 but before 06/28. The distributions of the Wellington fund are split between the two sets of forms. Neither set by itself includes all of the distributions that the Wellington fund made to you during the year. A lot of people like that. I find the Vanguard site easy to use. It could be better, but it's reasonable. For me (an index investor), I didn't see anything in the article that would compel me to switch to Schwab. +1 I find Vanguards site easy to use also and have never had a problem with it. Only thing I don't like is that they're constantly nagging me to switch to a brokerage account platform which I'm holding off on. This was talked about when the tax law was first passed. I can't understand why it took them so long to produce it. I also wonder how many people still do their taxes by hand - they would be the only ones affected by this as far as I can tell. Maybe it is more than I think. It would have been a better investment to invest in an online simplified e-file system for people who can use this format and make the leap from paper once and for all. The IRS was probably busy trying to fit a return form onto a "postcard" and generating the blizzard of schedules necessary to make that happen, sort of. Some of us prefer paper and using arithmetic so we understand what affects our taxes instead of tossing numbers into a black box where who kno...

The slab idea should be fine since it is not going to be an attached building. I would pour about 5 inches thick and a little thicker (7" to 8") for about a foot in all the way around the outside perimeter. Also I'd rod the outside perimeter and rods or wire mesh for the interior of the slab. If it floats a bit in the spring when frost comes out of the ground it shouldn't hurt anything. Also treated lumber for the plates around the outside walls is a must.
