Re: Is Preschool worth it? for $5,000?
As the mom of a kindergartener, I can wholeheartedly tell you that it is obvious and apparent what she learned in two years of preschool. I can't imagine her starting K without the foundation of the wonderful preschool we attended for 2 years. Private school is a separate matter, and one you will have to make based on the actual school your child will be attending, which it sounds like you may not know which one that is. We live in one of the best public school districts in the nation and still considered private school. I looked at one that was 20-25k/year, depending on the grade. It was an absolutely incredible school. INcredible. However, the question I asked myself was: Is it better to spend ~250,000 on a primary education, or would she...

We are in a similar situation that you are in. Our first choice right now is the Chevy Traverse. Not quite a minivan, and not an SUV. It drives like a car, has 8 passenger seating, and still has cargo room when all 8 seats are in use.

A minor consideration is watching CNBC.
CNBC would probably need to come through the HDHomerun Prime/Windows Media Center thing earlier.

Re: What Do You Use for Streaming on Your TV?
Do you pay for cable? Or, how does this work? Thanks. We do pay for cable. We do not have a cable box, however - comcast supplies us with a cablecard that goes into the HDHomerun. The cable TV comes into the house, and goes into the HDHomerun, which sends it all over our home network, including my PC. My PC records TV and the XBox takes it to the living room. You do not have to have a cable subscription to run the HDHomerun; you can put an antenna on top of your house, but then of course you just get broadcast channels. The HDHomerun w/o a cablecard will allow you to get Clear-QAM channels (2-29, essentially), and then the cablecard allows you to recieve premium/encrypted channels. We have a Kinect as well, which is also cool w/ the voice ...

This is what we do, but instead of a usb tuner card, we use a HDHomerun Prime that allows us to receive encrypted cable channels. It is so awesome, I can't believe it. Every house should have an XBox.Sammy_M wrote:Regular PC with HDMI out. Everything runs through Windows Media Center (Netflix, Hulu, Video Podcasts). Also acts as a DVR and we get over the air (OTA) stations in HD quality with just a USB Tuner card. XBox in another room connects to it over Wifi and allows shows recorded on the main PC to play on it. I love this setup and it has saved me a small bundle.

Re: Helping a Disabled Relative
I got some good advice on this thread and via PM, and I've appreciated everybody's suggestions. I'm still processing it, but here's what we've done so far. - My dad has informed him that I'll be handling his financial needs from here on out. He is unimpressed by this new change. - I've opened up an account at Wells Fargo (I even got a pony! :D), where my relative does his banking, in order to easily fund his account when he needs it. - I've researched qualifying for a reduced fare bus card through our city's transit. I did find out that what is happening is that he is taking draws on future checks every month (which no doubt the bank dings him for), so that is how he is always in arrears. He pulls it out in cash, and pays for things in cash...

Re: NetFlix vs Amazon Prime vs Hulu Plus
Hulu Plus has commercials, and they're not trivial. The commercial breaks can last over a minute, and you can't skip them. Personally, I have little use for the service, but my wife watches some shows on it and that keeps our DVR's storage free for other things. I dropped Hulu Plus because of this. I will pay for the service, or I will watch commercials, but not both. Also their lack of CBS programming was another strike against them. I also dropped Netflix in the last year, after being their customer since 2004. We don't really watch movies, and their streaming catalog isn't the greatest any more. I have Amazon Prime but I got it mostly for the free 2-day shipping. We've watched a couple things on their XBox app but their UI is terrible; ...

Helping a Disabled Relative
Hi Bogleheads, I was hoping you folks might have suggestions for me on how we might go about helping a mentally disabled relative. Here's the situation. He is a ~50 year old man who is somewhat mentally disabled. "Somewhat" in that C can take care of his day-to-day needs, but he is unable to plan even a little bit when it comes to finances. He misses dr.'s appointments because he didn't have money for the bus, probably because he took himself to Starbucks and the Movies the day before. His income is Social Security. My dad has bought him a condo, and we send him groceries about twice a month. His expenses are his condo dues, utilities, and personal items. He has one minor daughter who lives in the same area but not with him who he...

Thank You, Bogleheads.
I know I haven't been around these forums much lately, but I wanted to say thank you to all the Bogleheads for showing me what a good plan looks like and how to make it happen. My husband and I purchased a Foreclosed home in January. We used our old home (which we owned outright) to pay for half of it, and got a fairly hefty but doable mortgage to pay the other half. This month -- the same month that our first mortgage payment left our bank account -- my husband, our main income earner, was diagnosed with cancer. What are the chances of this? It must be pretty slim, but it happened. Because we have a solid emergency fund, and a solid "Plan C" after the emergency fun might be exhausted, we will ride this storm comfortably and with ...

Re: I just went through a conversion
Something that is missing and that causes some of the numbers to be very misleading is the ability to exclude certain transactions based upon the category. As an example, a transfer of $$$ from a Fidelity brokerage account to a Vanguard joint account shows up as a huge expense and a huge income. I want to be able to exclude transfers like I could do in Money. Try messing around with Reports. You may be able to get the info you're looking for that way - I know you can exclude transfers (and entire accounts, etc) in reports. When I booted up Q2008 this morning, it told me that if I upgraded to Q2010, they'd give me free Willmaker software and $10 off. I download from Discover and Vanguard into Quicken. I don't have the other accounts so I can't say for sure about those, but if I try to set up a new account at Wells Fargo I get two options for Wells-Fargo-related institutions, ING I get 4 options, and Charles Schwab 2 options. So it seems to me like you should be able to use those.
However - it may be that you are having trouble with Vanguard, Schwab, etc. because they are investment accounts, and Quicken Deluxe does not do investment accounts? Perhaps you need Premier for that.

Re: Quicken Premier software
I think Quicken's investment organization/analysis leaves a lot to be desired. It doesn't break down asset classes very well, so I do not use it for rebalancing -- I use Excel for that. It's also unclear how the performance tracking works. There are a lot of "placeholder" entries that I don't really understand. I have to manually update Hubs' 401k every quarter because it won't download from that particular institution. Etc. and so on.simplecd wrote:is anybody using it for organizing and analysis of the investments? just got it and trying to learn if it's useful at all...

Ducks In Debt.
Ducks & Family are embarking on an exciting new phase... we closed on our new home this afternoon.
We are using the equity in our current home plus a large but doable mortgage to purchase a home in arguably the best zip code in the county. It is a foreclosure that only ever got to 90% completion. There's no kitchen, and about 40 other small items on our punchlist, but with some patience and sweat equity, we will have increased our net worth by about 20% with this purchase. It is a great neighborhood with great schools, and we'll probably live here 20 years or more.
Now the hard work begins in earnest!

How is the Neatdesk working for you? What is its error rate at recognizing text and numbers? Did you look at competitors? I bought it with J&R Computer World gift cards I got from my credit card, so I was limited to looking at what they had. The only other one I looked at was the Fujitsu ScanSnap , but it did not come with a filing software package and would have had to get Acrobat as well, or look elsewhere for some other system. If we are over the Roth IRA limit, I will use my Traditional 401k to get us under that limit. But if we are not, I'll use the Roth option.
