The I-Pace is slower around a track. https://www.motortrend.com/cars/alfa-romeo/giulia/2019/tesla-model-3-vs-jaguar-i-pace-vs-alfa-romeo-giulia/ It's also somehow uses more energy than a Model X even though it's the same size as a Model 3. https://insideevs.com/efficiency-jaguar-i-pace-falters/ My guess is that the I-Pace is too much a compliance EV to compete with the Teslas, but if someone really wants a Jag, at least it's an option. :beer Ah, thanks. That is impressive indeed. They didn't go into the Tesla limiting the power after a couple of laps and taking like 3 seconds off a lap after that though. Another test pointed that out. So after a few laps they are essentially the same it appears. https://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/road-t...

Re: Talk me out of buying a Tesla Model 3

Fellow Bogleheads, I made the mistake of test driving a Tesla Model 3 Performance this weekend. The car blew me away and now I want one. I know that to most on this forum, anything above and beyond a Corolla or a Prius is a waste of money so I'll make an appeal to those like me who like fast cars and who might be able to sympathize... To that end, here's a current snapshot of "where I'm at": Age: 45 Invested assets: ~$1M, 80/20 Emergency fund: $40K (online savings) Home: no mortgage, property value ~$600K Income: ~$160K No kids No debt I also have an additional ~$40K cash set aside from the sale of a previous car that was planning to use to buy a new set of wheels. Re: Talk me out of buying a Tesla Model 3

OP, Even keeping the budget concerns aside, you were looking at $40k cars earlier and now are looking at $70k Tesla after test driving it. Before jumping into it, have you test driven other cars in the Tesla price range? Yes, you liked it compared to other $40k cars, but to decide if it is actually worth $70k, you should compare it with other $70k cars. I’m amazed the Jaguar I-Pace isn’t in the equation. No tail risk, more practical (e.g. mountain bike) just as fast around a track I believe...though not as fast in a drag race. The I-Pace is slower around a track. https://www.motortrend.com/cars/alfa-romeo/giulia/2019/tesla-model-3-vs-jaguar-i-pace-vs-alfa-romeo-giulia/ It's also somehow uses more energy than a Model X even though it's the ...

Re: Developer Laptop

If you only need a few days to a week of cloud resources, I'd go in that direction. If you need more than this, things can get pricey. If I'm reading Google's pricing right, at about $.20/GB per month for SSD provisioned space, your 5TB/5000BG is going to run you about $1000/month. I've seen used 1.92TB Cloudspeed Eco drives for +/-$200 or so. 1 month of SSD storage on Google pays <8TB of SSD storage that'll likely last much longer than a month. You can also pick up large (1.6TB) write intensive enterprise SSDs for not too much ($300+), and I've read DDR3 is getting back down to earth. If possible, you can way more bang for your buck from used enterprise server inventory stuff (SAS > SATA, more max memory, more cores, etc...) and use whatev...

I think everything's kind of hectic on the delivery side now that Tesla really wants to show a profit and we're nearing the end of the quarter. With that said, problems with vehicle quality and delivery appear to be the exception to the rule. I took delivery in May, which was really painless compared to buying a car from a dealer, and the car itself is as good as anything else I've purchased new in terms of quality. If someone's selling or trading in their current car, I would definitely wait until after they accept delivery of their 3. :beer

Re: I need a chainsaw to trim branches and limbs!!

I recommend against a reciprocating saw unless you're also on the ground because the blade can bind a lot easier than a chainsaw or pole saw blade would and may throw you off balance. This is not an issue for the smaller pistol-grip models where the blade faces upwards: https://www.milwaukeetool.com/-/media/Products/Power-Tools/Cordless/Saws-and-Cutters/2719-21_A_updated.ashx?mw=520&mh=520&hash=B763983BE0BDFA1BB68045B3D7D194206D03C156 And even so, generally when the blade binds, it shakes the branch rather than kicking back to an appreciable degree. You get blurry vision, but it doesn't throw you off balance. :D Nice! I've only had kickback from cutting larger limbs too. At the same time, I imagine even the smaller pole saws could ...

I'd get a battery powered pole saw. I recently picked up a 10" chainsaw 8" pole saw, weed wacker, and hedge trimmer with 2 2AH batteries/chargers for $200 and I'm really like them. They don't last very long on the 2AH batteries, but I have two, and I end up working for shorter intervals which I should really do anyway. I agree that car companies are greedy, but that doesn't mean EVs aren't viable. Most car companies have to decades of time and billions of dollars invested in ICEs, and being greedy, they would rather drag their feet on EVs and minimize the risks to those investments than aggressively push a product that could undermine their other products. They also have to appease their customers, dealers, who make most of their money off of maintenance. The question is surely not if EVs are viable? They most assuredly are. Tesla among others has proven that. And the need for an EV solution has not gone away - in fact it is getting more urgent. The speed of mass adoption, when it comes, will blind us. I freely admit that is likely to be after 2030 not i...

The other manufacturers will have to be dragged kicking and screaming into electric vehicles, no matter how many models they promise, concept artwork they release, etc. Mitsubishi, Nissan, Ford, and Volvo all had regular production EV's on the market before Tesla (not counting the original roadster, which they used more as a marketable prototype than a production vehicle). BMW, Chevy, Honda, and Toyota all had models on the market the same year or the year after the Model S. I knew you were going to post this! :D In a set up test with the Tesla PR guy under ideal conditions where they don't include lap times it cut power by 3 seconds a lap after just a few laps. That is NOT an M3 my friend. Heat buildup is inevitable. After three or four laps at absolute tire-torturing full speed, the car begins to reduce power output. The car will go roughly 30 laps before needing to be charged. So perhaps a 45 minute track day. What fun! Again, not an M3. A typical track day lasts most of a day over several sessions and you drive there in your car and home. The R&T article ends with sort of the udnerstanding that this isn't reallyi a m3 competitor. Is that what you're looking at for recommending people to short the stock? They won’t go bankrupt but they will likely need to raise capital and that can be expensive and be reflected in a lower stock price. Yes, they claim to be executing well and to be profitable and cash flow positive for every quarter starting with Q3. Some quick research..... Of the 1 Billion cars sold worldwide last year, Tesla produced 100k. Now, my silly graduate engineering and math classes must have failed me here because somehow, I can't figure out where that's 10% or has any hope of every being 10%. Market cap, I'm finding: 10: FCA $36B 9: Nissan $41B 8: Ford $44B 7: Tesla $48B 6: GM $53B 5: Honda $61B 4: BMW $71B 3: Daimler $84B 2: VW $101B 1: Toyota $214B All of these figures are worldwide and all of these companies sell worldwide. I don't think Tesla's current valuation is based off of selling 100k cars in 2017. My guess is it's related to Tesla growing from having essentially no revenue a decade ago, to what I'm guessing will be $20-$25 billion in revenue this year. That grow...

Ditto on not feeding the trolls (the factory has two paint shops FWIW). Tesla's opening up orders to everyone for the Long Range + PUP versions because that's where margins are highest and odds are Tesla only has until the end of the year to deliver cars that can get the full federal tax credit. They're shooting for profitability from the 3 because it makes it easier to raise capital in the future and gives them more wiggle room with production/etc down the road. Tesla has already submitted the base/standard range 3's parts content/origin to the NHTSA for 2018, so I'm guessing at least a few base/standard range 3s will be built this year. Not gonna disagree with current CCS being slower than Super. My Bolt runs 43 kW (actual) below 50%SOC at the best current CCS chargers....its ~75 HW miles added per 30 minute stop. Newer CCS will take my Bolt to 65 kW (actual), about 105 miles added in 30 minutes, I expect to have plenty of those around me in a year or two. Many Tesla super charging sites also hit charging speed limits when crowded, high SOC, etc. Don't know if I would want to cross-country in a Tesla or my Bolt. But both suit a 250-400 mile drive ok if the chargers are available. AS with all things, get a Tesla if you want one. But a Bolt might suit your use case, and would be cheaper. Re: Keto Diet

IIRC, there isn't any difference between keto/non-keto in terms of reducing body mass, but going on keto tends to result in larger initial weight loss because people retain less water when on it.

Re: To take or not to take delivery of Tesla 3

Bypassing tests, including this brake test, is standard when those tests are redundant. Tesla was doing the standard brake test and track testing the cars, which was redundant. Now that they're more confident about their product quality, they're just doing track testing, and plan to eventually just do standard brake testing, which is what most manufacturers do. Having said all that, your focus on Tesla's safety seems disingenuous given that a cursory search of your posts finds nothing on far more serious/fatal safety problems like GM's ignition switch recall. Puhleaaaase! I was responding to directly to a couple of posts directly above and which I quoted about there being allegedly no evidence of shorting QC due to the tent manuf...

Re: To take or not to take delivery of Tesla 3

Hey matjen, I don’t remember where, and perhaps I am misremembering it, but I thought that you had posted that some post ago would be your last about Tesla. Whatever, if you made that promise, I think I will honor it in your stead. This whole thread is so resolutely OT and divisive that I’ve lost the desire to post. I'm sure you remember quite well. It was on a thread about whether to generally buy an EV or hybrid and it was a couple days ago regarding that thread. https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=252811#p3997726 I think a few minutes of review and you could have found that out. The only thing divisive on this entire thread is the repeated attacks on posters rather than the posts. This is a perfect example. Classy....

Those that say they are shorting the stock, and don't own an EV, are not reliable sources of information IMO.
DW and I test drove a Model S twice and rented a Model X off of Turo for 4 days, and the fit and finish of our 3 is definitely way better than the X, and IMO better than the S, although we only had test drives for those two.

Re: To take or not to take delivery of Tesla 3

It’s unlikely that I’ll have an opportunity to do that in the near future, and while I’m sure it is interesting and if I happen to be traveling in an area that has such a plant I’d look into taking a tour, it’s not one of the top things on my list of things to do. Because you have background in this area, I was hoping to learn from you an example of something that cannot be achieved in an open structure that could be achieved in a more traditional factory setting. It’s fine if you don’t have an example. I will have to settle with the circus analogy, though I’m not sure what that means since so much of the assembly line is automated. I thought it might be exposure to the elements, but maybe that’s not a concern. Short answer. Tent is too sm...

Re: To take or not to take delivery of Tesla 3

I think the Bolt's luxuryish. The Premier seems to be going for around $39k OTD if you're OK haggling, so about $10k less than the least expensive 3 currently offered, and it has leather/etc... At the same time, while both cars have options the other doesn't, the 3 is faster, has better range, supercharging, and some of the interior features are generally seen as better (touchscreen, sound system), so I can also see it going for $10k more than a Bolt Premier. http://www.chevybolt.org/forum/9-2017-chevy-bolt-ev-general-discussion-forum/22530-so-called-invoice-price.html I own a Bolt Premier, fully loaded, and wouldn't call it luxuryish. It is a great car to be sure. By $39K OTD do you mean before state sales tax & license ? This would m...

Re: To take or not to take delivery of Tesla 3

Wow, $61k. That's too much for this vehicle. But that's just me. I was interested at $35k (with $7,500 credit). Perhaps I would consider a few options at $45k max. If you look at Teslas history, nobody should have expected a 35k car. I want to say the Model S was a 55k car when announced:) The question to me was always was the premium going to be 10k or 20k for one that was equiped normally. Well I knew I wanted AWD so was going to be paying another 2-3k AND I wanted adaptive cruise control for another 2k or so. Turns out they want 4k for AWD, 5k for adaptive cruise control, make you buy some fancy options, and a big battery. It is interesting in that a low of people said why buy a Bolt while for the same price more you can get the much ni...

Re: To take or not to take delivery of Tesla 3

It's great that BYD wants to catch up, but that takes time. Just like it took Tesla and Panasonic time to get the Gigafactory up and running. I think you and I evaluate the production of the competing players differently. :-) Whatever Tesla says will take 2-3 times as long IMO. So even if a year behind, the others will get there first or at same time. Just a hunch. The article says you only have 3 days to get your money back. Sounds like things have changed. Those reservation holders must pay an additional $2,500 to turn their reservations into an order, at which point the original $1,000 deposit goes towards the overall payment for the car. Buyers can cancel their orders within 3 days for a full refund, the company confirmed , but after t...

Re: To take or not to take delivery of Tesla 3

Are you referring to the net production capacity of other manufacturers, or specific expansions? If other automakers partner with battery manufacturers to build production capacity for their EVs, it'll take them at least a year or so to build their own Gigafactory to catch up to Tesla/Panasonic. I don't think so. Just yesterday from Bloomberg. They are already in this space. One must remember the Gigafactory is an ongoing thing. It isn't built and Tesla has a horrid track record of hitting any numbers on anything on time. I doubt that is the case with these companies. Re: To take or not to take delivery of Tesla 3

I used to be excited about upcoming EVs from other traditional car manufactures... It's important to read their press releases critically. For example, Volvo has said that by 20xx, all of his cars will be electrified. When that press release came out, many gave them high props. But note that Volvo did not say that all cars would be electric-only, just that they'd be electrified. In other words, a hybrid fits that definition. Exactly. There isn't a car manufacturer right now that can compete with Tesla. Tesla has at least a few years lead on battery production and getting the costs down. The reason I want Telsa to succeed is to further the EV transition. Um, I'm gonna disagree. Tesla gets its cells from Panasonic. Several other East Asian c...

Sprint's had a promotion where you only pay $10+taxes/month for up to 5 lines, but you have to have specific phones to sign up for it, and it's online/call-in only, not in-store.

Re: To take or not to take delivery of Tesla 3

That sounds really low to me. Having said that, if you pick up a base 3 and want to sell it for $15,000+ after driving it for 3 years, I would buy it sight unseen as long as it wasn't wrecked. IMO, the 3 is years ahead of the competition. https://www.reddit.com/r/teslamotors/comments/8nhodw/model_3_teardown_in_germany_finds_that_teslas/ http://evtv.me/2018/05/tesla-model-3-gone-battshit/ Let me clarify what I was trying to get at; The Bolt would cost me about $8300 in depreciation for three years, what are the estimates for the Tesla 3 depreciation over the first three years? If it follows the same pattern as the S, it'll be around $20,000+ after three years. Course, that could change if the competition heats up, but legacy auto manufactur...

Re: To take or not to take delivery of Tesla 3

Going back on topic, I think someone should take delivery if they want a new, sporty, efficient EV. The 3 to me has 90+% of the practicality and efficiency of a Prius with 90+% of the performance and appeal of a luxury sports sedan. No other manufacturer's offering anything close right now, and I think it'll take them at least a few years to catch up to Tesla. At the same time, I can see balking at the cost. Prior to the 3, there weren't any cars in my price range that I seriously considered buying new, and I've hemmed and hawed about it. If push comes to shove, I imagine I can sell it and end up eating whatever the depreciation turns out to be. :beer If I can move the discussion away from autopilot... The question about depreciation is on...

Re: To take or not to take delivery of Tesla 3

AFAIK, the only situation where you or any other driver using EAP wouldn't be able to save themselves is if they weren't paying attention and/or weren't conscious. EAP is extremely easy to override with a relatively small amount of force, which can drop the car down to TACC, or completely into manual mode if you tap the brakes too. From the report, it looks like the car in front of the Tesla traveled either over or nearly over the gore, and the MX followed that car into the gore "lane". Once it was in that "lane", it drove for four seconds before hitting the K-Rail. I believe that's enough time for 2+ 60-0 stops, and I imagine far more evasive "slalom" type maneuvers assuming the driver was conscious and payin...
