Re: ITunes app for kids gadget time limits

I kick them off and tell them to get outside too.

Also recently started using an app called ourpact. Works well - you can create schedules and/or block them out all together.

Good luck!

Re: How did you educate your kids on finances?

DW and I started teaching them about taxes with their Halloween candy when they were around 4 or 5. We would line it all up - I would give them 2/3 of it and take the remainder. We went through where that other 1/3 went - some went to the kid down the street that does nothing, some went to kid in an...

Re: Any bogleheads use a "smart" sprinkler system?

Second the use of the Rachio. Replaced my old controller a few years back when I added a few zones - had the same experience as most with the rain sensor being unreliable among other things. Not to mention the user interface was something straight out of 1995 or so. This units features has come alon...

Re: Android TV stick recommendations?

Amazon fire stick - $34 for entry level version.

You can sideload Kodi to play local files (DVD's you have ripped...) :D

Takes about 10min to go through the sideload process the first time.

Re: NAS or HTPC?

It actually does Amazon prime by default and also netflix, hulu and other services with subscription.

The benefit to play local content from NAS is bonus for me.

Happy Hunting.

Re: NAS or HTPC?

Another suggestion in addition to the Roku/ATV/Shield path is Amazon FireTV and Fire stick. There are three models on Amazon. If you are Prime member, you get access to a TON of content and you can do netflix and other streaming services. Entry level model is like $34. You can also 'sideload' Kodi o...

Re: Best Car for Family of 5?

We made the plunge shortly after having #3. Mentally and emotionally struggled to buy the minivan - finally settled on Sienna. The Sienna and the Odyssey are the best choices for this class IMHO. Once you get over that mental hump of owning a minivan, it is actually quite a nice vehicle. At time of ...

Re: Master Thread for Austin Texas area Bogleheads

Just got back from the conference and am interested in any other Htown folks that are looking in starting Houston group. Houston is (and will continue to be) quite geographically dispersed and maybe we can find somewhere distance neutral to those interested? There were three Houstonions at the confe...

Re: Who Gets a New iPhone Every Year? Why?

I buy one each year. Being an early adopter I tend to gravitate towards it. Since 2008 I have bought new one each year. When I am "up" for upgrade I get it at the ATT price, on the off years, I buy it at non-contract price. The only year I skipped was the 5 to 5s cycle as that upgrade was ...

Re: RE: Buying house from relocation service?

I bought one from a relo company back in 2010. They had been sitting on the inventory for 9+ months and market was bad and they wanted to move it. They did a few upgrades to market it better - paint, new carpet, hardi in a few areas. My experience was that once they did these things they had no inte...

Re: Best "All Around Lens" for Nikon DSLRs?

Not a Nikon, but Canon shooter, but same challenge... for all around lens when I travel I use a Tamron 18-200mm. There are several of these from Sigma, Tamron and Nikon makes as well. To me this is good lens to walk around while traveling as it is great for up close stuff and also gives you some rea...

Re: IPhone in Japan

I go to Tokyo about every 2 months for work and here is my experience: Best idea is to get international data plan via ATT/VZ, etc. Not sure if your provider will let you turn on for June and then off for July (for example). If you don't want to do this, you can rent a hotspot at the airport for abo...

Re: To MBA or Not to MBA

Thanks for your reply. Yes I will be doing part time while working. If I may ask, what type of opportunities opened up for you? For me it was moving from an individual contributor role to a product management role and then eventually into international product line manager role. Also I feel MBA was...

Re: To MBA or Not to MBA

Hi, BS/MS in EE here, chiming in as I went through this decision process about 15 years ago. Basic advice - I have never met anyone who has STEM undergrad degree that went back for Masters and regretted it later. After working for a few years I went back and got MBA part time while working full time...

If you have comcast/TWC or other for internet, look at what they are charging you for modem rental. It will vary per market, but typical is $6-10/month. You can buy your own for between $60-80. The payback math is easy. Doesn't take much to set it up - just call and give them MACID off the modem and...

Re: Evernote Premium Worth It?

Also notice the sharing capability for the premium version is much more enhanced. Use this to share stuff with the wife - grocery lists, todo, etc. Also...
