Re: Fellow TDA bogleheads [TDA dropping Vanguard ETFs from commission-free list]

is there a glaring reason NOT to expect the new funds to perform similarly to the corresponding vanguard ETFs? seems like if the funds are tracking the same things, then they should perform similarly in the long run. if the funds go out of existence for some reason, then will you lose the money in it?

portfolio growth - compounding vs savings

I'm relatively early in the accumulation phase following basically indexing/bogleheads approach and was just wondering around what number did people notice that their portfolio was growing more from compounding/returns rather than brute savings? Currently saving between 20-25% of gross. I do see the...

tax lien auction/investing

I was doing some property searching and stumbled across a tax lien sale coming up next month. I did some preliminary googling and read a couple of the old threads, and I wanted to see if anyone here has any updates/experience with this currently? If I win the lien, and the owner doesn't pay within t...

TD ameritrade has a no commission list of over 100 ETFs including some vanguard ones that you could do a three fund portfolio. You just have to opt into it before doing a trade.

Re: Privia Medical Group

The complexity of medical billing and lack of transparency in both insurance fee schedules and hospital charges is what is making the whole system what it is...and the physician is left to take all of blame and public outcry. There definitely are lots of medical billing errors because each insurance...

Re: Physician Specialists Looking for career advice

I think this really depends on the specialty. Other specialties (particularly surgical sub-specialists as well as gastroenterologists) can still make it in private practice. (Although I strongly suggest against trying to go into solo practice for just about any specialty outside of pure aesthetics....

employer retirement plans

I am wondering if there are any employer retirement plans that will allow as much contribution and tax-deferral as a solo 401k (53k)? 401k plans only have 18k deferral - can they be structured to allow up to 53k contribution and also be deductible? I read about SEP-IRAs, but only the employer can co...

would something like selling things on ebay/craigslist pass for a "home business"? Even if it's like $100 of income, we would then need to report the income on schedule C and pay SE taxes etc? Or could she just start something like that with the intent of selling but not actually make anyt...

suggestions to start using backdoor ROTH

I would like to start doing backdoor ROTHs for myself and my wife. She has a tIRA with pre-tax funds in it currently. She is currently stay at home. To avoid the pro-rata, I can only think of re-characterizing as ROTH, but that would mean paying taxes at a higher bracket than what they were original...

Re: Fidelity or iShares for total stk market?

According to Morningstar, the 9-style boxes are the same and the "growth of $10k" charts are almost indistinguishable. I don't see that either is a clear winner over the other. Seems to me it boils down to whether you like mutual funds or ETFs better. Yeah, I noticed that as well! The thr...

Re: ETF regret

While I only own ETFs, one thing that I like about mutual funds is being able to buy partial shares. Since I can only buy full shares with ETFs, I often have a small amount of change sitting in my tax-free/deferred account for the entire year. It's just annoying to look at I suppose. Does this left...

I am going to be getting the majority of my income as 1099 income in the coming year. I wanted to set things up so that I can keep my personal and "business" income/expenses separate as I will be taking advantage of business deductions. I am going keeping it as sole proprietor for now (and...

Re: Use the Dip to Clean Up Your Taxable Account

I have a similar question - I have a few individual stocks in my taxable account that have a pretty sizable gain - total over $30k - since 2008. Looks like a very nice offering. Very interested. If our child comes out in 2017, would it be worth searching for an used 2015 top trim or just buying brand new since Toyotas hold their value so well? Just pure speculation. Haven't test drove any of them. Also, does anyone know a good site to resea...

I'm assuming you're not in the Brent district (or even ludlow taylor). I'm sure you already know this, but the only really good DC public schools are in the western side (friendship heights/tenleytown/cleveland park). you could still be in the city but live out there. Personally I would not rely on ...

I think increasing the witholdings is what I will do since it will be only a small amt of income.

My current job does not have a 401k (yet)...so I could put up to 18000 (employee contribution) into the solo 401k right?
