Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?

The Boys in the Boat This movie evokes a level of emotion and excitement much like Rocky (The original, 1976) and Miracle (2004). Although different sports each features underdogs, against all odds and circumstances, achieving victory. The film starts with a gloomy mood of desperation and deprivation that the country was experiencing in 1936, the seventh year of the Great Depression, and follows the men and coaches of the University of Washington's rowing team as they go through a competitive gauntlet to qualify for the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. I had always viewed rowing as an Ivy League elite "gentlemen's sport" so it was a revelation to me what a rigorous demanding sport this is requiring a lot of physical, mental, and emotiona...

Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse

Excellent documentary about impressionist artists who
made elaborate gardens a frequent subject for their paintings.
The focus is on Monet but his contemporaries are also featured.
I did not know many of the painters were also accomplished
horticulturalists and landscape/waterscape designers.

Anatomy of a Fall

Set in the French Alps, a couple (both writers), share a multistory
chalet. The man falls from the upper story to his death and after
an investigation the wife is charged with the death.
About 50% of the movie is courtroom drama and a key figure in
the case is the son of the couple who is blind. What he heard and
perceived had a pivotal impact on the case and was a cornerstone
of the outcome.
Excellent acting, particularly the lead role of the accused woman
played by actress Sandra Huller.

The Miracle Club

When you see a cast headlined by Maggie Smith and
Kathy Bates one expects their typical brand of acerbic,
sarcastic humor but surprise, surprise, the film was very
poignant and touching. Laura Linney and Agnes O'Casey
also joined Smith and Bates in a story about healing and
reconciliation.
Four women, in 1960s England, take a trip to Lourdes, France
seeking healing miracles; some physical and some mental
and emotional. Miracles do occur but in a way no one expects
or anticipates.

The movie takes place when Dior dresses were not made

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?

Asteroid City This film is a campy spoof on 1950's culture, space obsession, emerging technology, and living in the bomb era. Different groups of people for various reasons come together at a desert attraction called Asteroid City, circa 1955, named such because of an asteroid impact eons ago. The props and set remind me of a putt-putt golf course of bygone years with the goofy sculptures and old Route 66 style garish attractions. The movie has lots of well known stars, e.g., Scarlett Johansson, Edward Norton, Tom Hanks, Steve Carell, Matt Dillion, and others who must have enjoyed playing in this spoof. To me it was moderately amusing but it all depends on your sense of humor wavelength- some think it is hilarious. Take your chances, for m...

Oppenheimer I was reasonably aware of the events surrounding the Manhattan Project and Los Alamos and had some basic knowledge of the physics leading to the development of the atomic bomb but what I enjoyed most about this movie were the lesser known aspects of Oppenheimer's life that were explored. His personal beliefs, which seemed to be constantly evolving, his mystical and otherworldly visions (at least according to the movie), political and personal intrigue, and the efforts to discredit him as a result of political backstabbing and personal vendettas were all fascinating facets of his life that were assayed in the film. Excellent acting all around with standout performances by Cillian Murphy in the title role, Emily Blunt, and Matt D...

However, everyone in her circle (particularly her psychologist husband) tell her how wonderful it is. She overhears her husband confiding to a relative that her book is not so great and she goes into a meltdown. The theme running through the entire movie, and played out multiple ways among different characters is this: Whitewashing reality and giving insincere praise will delude the person and set them up for false hope and disappointment. The film differentiates between encouragement and delusion. The psychologist husband has some hilarious encounters with quirky patients, reminiscent of D...

Two men who have been friends since childhood have aspirations, values,
and eventual professions that are totally different. One thing they have
in common is an extraordinary, almost preternatural, love of the mountains.
Everything going on in their lives, always in the long run, takes second
place to their connection to the mountains.

Saving Grace (1986)

I remember first seeing this film in the 1980s and have thought in
the years since it was underrated and overlooked. A benevolent
and down-to-earth Pope has become somewhat detached from
the outside world after being exclusively in the Vatican for his
first year.
While gardening in his non-papal apparel, he is accidently locked
out of the Vatican complex. He first wanders about Rome then to
a village in the countryside. His associates are beside themselves
trying to cover up his absence but he does contact them occasionally
by phone to say he is ok and has a mission to accomplish. Great story.

Re: What Movie Have You Recently Watched?

"The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" was on TCM tonight. It's a musical romance/drama. I had tried to watch it another time but just wasn't in the mood. It's a friend's favorite movie who urged me to see the whole movie. It's unusual because there is no spoken dialog -- the entire dialog is sung in French with English subtitles. It's from 1964 and was nominated for 5 Academy Awards; won none although it won the French equivalent. It introduced Catherine Deneuve as a teen. The director of LaLa Land had said that this film influenced that film; it shows. I'd rather watch LaLa Land (although I have friends who hated that movie when we saw it in the theater -- I didn't like it much the first time but it grew on me later). I like musicals but...

Corsage (2022)

Somewhat bizarre film about a discontented Austrian Empress (a
fictionalized account of Empress Elisabeth of Austria) who seems
to sleepwalk through life trying to find happiness and her niche.
The movie time setting is 1878 but several anachronisms (e.g.
telephone hanging on the wall, modern doors, exit signs, and pop
songs from the 1960s-1970s sung by characters in the movie such
as "Help Me Make it Through the Night") make the film somewhat
of a spoof.

True Confessions (1981)

The magic of this movie was not the plot, which was somewhat
seedy and grim involving corruption in the police department
and the Catholic church, and a shady developer in late 1940s
Los Angeles. The centerpiece about which the story revolved
was the brutal murder of a young woman loosely based on the
infamous 'Black Dahlia ' murder in 1947.
The magic was the astounding acting of the two leads---Robert
Duvall playing a cynical LA detective and Robert De Niro playing a
mild-mannered but cunning priest. These two acting legends (who
played brothers in this film) ply their craft with brilliant distinction.

Re: What Book Are You Currently Reading? Part VI

Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe I occasionally read an iconic classic novel that I bypassed during my student years and such was the case with the well known Robinson Crusoe . The novel starts off well with the adventures and misadventures of Crusoe as he goes to seek fame and fortune in opposition to his parents' more realistic advice. The crux of the story is where it bogs down for me. The years of survival on an unknown island becomes a monotonous and laborious narrative pretty quickly. To be fair and to put things in context we have been so inundated in my lifetime with books, articles, cartoons, movies, and TV programs that capitalized on the castaway-marooned-deserted island genre that I may have become jaded to the whole subject. At...

We enjoyed it as well. Did you catch the contribution of Cmdr Ian Fleming (James Bond's creator) to the idea behind Operation Mincemeat?
Yes, this was something I did not know before I saw the movie.

Trapeze

1956 move starring Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis, and Gina Lollobrigida.
A trapeze flyer (Lancaster) injured years earlier mentors a gung ho
young trapeze artist (Curtis) trying to master the "triple". Gina
Lollobrigida plays an ambitious acrobat who schemes to enter the
trapeze team to get her share of the spotlight.
Story is a little soapy but I enjoyed the 1950s ambience and the
dazzling color of that era. The acting ability and charisma of Burt
Lancaster never ceases to amaze me. One of the icons of the
"super actor" era.

My Cousin Rachel by Daphne Du Maurier

Intriguing novel with somewhat of an ambiguous ending.
Two film versions (1952 and 2017) of this novel have been
made. A young man coming into an inheritance at first
dislikes but is later fascinated by the widow of his benefactor.

The Apartment
1960, Starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine
Nice guy C.C. Baxter (Lemmon) tries to please everyone in his gargantuan
office complex hoping it will advance his career. He allows philandering
work associates access to his apartment for their illicit rendezvous at great
inconvenience to himself.
He falls for elevator operator Fran Kubelik (MacLaine) and a bittersweet
story with a gem of an ending develops.
Great classic. Recommended.

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffeneggar

The premise of a guy, who at different ages would travel back or
forward in time and have a meeting, past or future with his wife
(or wife to be), was intriguing but it was so scattered and frequent
it was like hearing the same joke or same story for the 100th time.
An ok concept but too diffused, strewed, and chaotic for me.

Tutoring and teaching mathematics. I made my living
with applied math and physics (structural/geotechnical
engineering) so I enjoyed helping people who were
struggling primarily with algebra, geometry, and
trigonometry.
