BigLaw senior associate - wondering about timing for move in house
I'm a senior associate at a biglaw firm where I'll be up for non-share partner next fall (for those familiar with biglaw it's the only firm where I can guarantee that will happen because anyone with a pulse at my year gets it). I'm feeling pretty burned out and have started looking for an in house r...

Re: Baby on the Way, Portfolio Check-In and Things to Do Now
Your prior thread (linked below) from February about your baby on the way discussed needing estate planning and updating life insurance. Were you able to get these completed? Thanks! Some we've done some we've postponed until after her arrival. The biggest one we're putting off is having the discus...

Re: Baby on the Way, Portfolio Check-In and Things to Do Now
Congratulations on expecting! Looks like you've done a great job shedding debt. It also looks like you're set up pretty well with compensation even in a HCOL area. It would be helpful to get a better view of your expenses to give you more specific advice. Assume you'll be looking at day care, so ma...

Baby on the Way, Portfolio Check-In and Things to Do Now
My wife and I are delighted to be expecting our first child this fall after years of struggle. I'm predictably stressing out about the financial impact and our ability to give her the kind of life we want to. We live in a (very) high cost of living area and despite being in our mid thirties (I'm 34 ...

Excess Deferral Issue
I changed employers part way through 2019 and managed to not set up my new 401k properly which resulted in an excess deferral of approximately $6k. After realizing what happened earlier this year, I followed Vanguard's instructions and sent them an instruction letter to have them cash out the excess...

Re: Can a company buy itself?
"all of its own shares" is a bit misleading. A company ultimately needs to be owned by someone, either an individual or another entity. Companies do stock buybacks all the time for a portion of the stock. They can be a great way to help juice the stock price and return funds to investors. ...

Baby on the Way , Things to Do Now
My DW and I are delighted to be expecting our first child early this fall (we aren't telling anyone in the real world yet but it does at least feel good to tell the internet)! While this is planned and very much welcome, I'm realizing I'm a bit overwhelmed on where to start from a financial and risk...

Thinking of Leaving Biglaw (current midlevel) - Things to Consider
I'm currently a fifth year at a biglaw firm and the lifestyle is getting to me. My wife and I are looking to start a family and so I'm looking at the possibility of moving in house in Spring of 2020, which will come with a substantial paycut. My current base is $255k, going up to $280k in January. B...

[Another] How much to spend on a car/what to get thread
I always find the advice I get on here useful for putting things into perspective and helping me think about what I actually care about. I'm four years out from graduating law school (actually exactly 4 years out today) and have managed to pay off my law school loans and build up a pretty nice nest ...

Re: Can you suggest where to live if work at UCLA
My niece and her husband live in Encino, which is 10 miles northwest of UCLA. They live in a nice 2 BR, 2 bath apartment for $2400 a month. Encino is an affluent area, and you can get to UCLA in about 30 minutes. There are other spots in the southern San Fernando valley - like Sherman Oaks - that y...

Re: Best LSAT course?
I used Blueprint and was very happy with it (ended with a 177 for what it’s worth). Blueprint is one of the priciest options but at least when I signed up they included copies of every old LSAT and only used real questions instead of having ones they wrote to mimic the test. That alone was worth it ...

Oh no! My wife and I showed up for a few minutes and didn't see anyone so we thought we'd gotten confused about the time or location and left. Hopefully more people have shown up!FullYellowJacket wrote:Bogleheads, party of 1?
