Rebalance Question

Short Version: 1) Should I consolidate our retirement accounts to our current employers for simplicity and use BrokerageLink for access to a Russell 2000 index fund to get small cap end of market, or should I keep former employer accounts that have small cap index funds available? 2) Is there any reason why I should NOT roll over my wife’s 403b and 401a from a former employer into her current employer’s 401k? Long Version: Emergency funds: Six months expenses (2 months in savings, 4 months in money market in Roth IRAs) Debt: Mortgage @4.00%; Purchased mid-2015, currently ~85% LTV, Auto Loan @3.75%, My student loans @4%, Spouse student loans @1.75%, no credit card debt Tax Filing Status: Married Filing Jointly Tax Rate: 39.6% Federal (AMT i...

Re: Portfolio Advice for Upcoming Life Events

Thanks for the info, frequentT! Rental property: lots of options to think about, negative cash flow is a bummer; you probably will not be able to deduct passive losses? will rental market rates rise soon enough to get you to neutral? have you thought about offering a lease purchase agreement when your current renter leaves? Could be attractive to a buyer with property values starting to rise; it could get you to neutral cash flow----time for some spreadsheet work to project the future of the property, breakeven pts. under different scenarios Correct, passive loss deduction was completely phased out for our 2012 taxes and our income should be higher 2013 and beyond. At least I can carry forward the losses to reduce any gain we may get when w...

Re: Portfolio Advice for Upcoming Life Events

Thanks again for your advice! Here is what I plan to do, any additional comments? 1) Attempt to sell the rental property 2) Increase my 401(k) and my wife's 403(b)/457(b) contributions to ensure our AGI is below $300K this year 3) Max out my HSA contribution 4) Re- balance the current investments as follows: Taxable (DRIPs) 5% DTE Energy (DTE) 1% Occidental Petroleum (OXY) His 401(k) and ESOP at Fidelity 21% Spartan® 500 Index Fund (FUSEX) (0.10%) Company 50% match up to 6% of income Her 401(a) (UC DCP) at Fidelity 2% Spartan® 500 Index Fund - Institutional (FXSIX) (0.03%) 2% Spartan® Small Cap Index Fund (FSSVX) (0.30%) His Rollover IRA at Vanguard 14% Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund Admiral (VTIAX) (0.18%) 24% Vanguard Total...

Help with Difficult Cost Basis Calcuation

I sold a portion of DTE stock we own in 2012. The stock was originally purchased in 1981 for my wife by her parents in a UGMA and transferred to us in a joint account after we were married. The stock dividends were reinvested in the Dividend Reinvestment and Stock Purchase Plan from the beginning and additional purchases were made through the purchase plan in 1981, 82, 83, 84, 85, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013. I have the annual dividend reinvestment statements and plugged the purchase amounts into the NetBasis.com cost basis calculator and used their auto dividend reinvestment feature. To my surprise, portions of some of the dividend payments in the early 80's were identified as Return of Capital dividends. There is no indication of that in a...

Re: Portfolio Advice for Upcoming Life Events

Not Bob: Thank you for the links. They were very helpful. I do view my Roth IRA as a backup to my cash emergency fund and agree it makes sense to use bonds for that purpose, so I will keep the Roth IRA funds in VBILX. I have an HSA/HDHP for my health insurance and will max out my contributions.

NYDad: Thanks again. Agreed, you never know what the future may hold! I think you've convinced me to sell the rental property. I've been leaning that way recently, especially with the baby on the way, and it might be nice to have one less thing to be concerned with.

Re: Portfolio Advice for Upcoming Life Events

Not Bob and NYDad: I did not realize the significant tax implications of AGI >$300K in terms of the ATRA deduction phase-outs and will re-prioritize to increase my 401(k) contributions to the limit to ensure I don't exceed that AGI threshold. The Bogleheads wiki article on ATRA was very clear, but I was very confused by the wiki entry for ACA . I did not understand the tables on that page. Will keeping AGI below $300k be enough to avoid ACA tax implications, or do I need to consider more? Do you have any suggestions on additional material to help clarify that topic? NYDad, addressing your thoughts: 1) You are correct. We are given a check made out specifically for DTE stock every year from my wife's grandparents. I am very grateful for thei...

Portfolio Advice for Upcoming Life Events

Hi Bogleheads! I’m a believer in the three-fund portfolio and re-balance annually when I do my taxes and make my Roth IRA contributions. There are a few life events that have happened or will be happening in the near future, so I wanted to check in and get your thoughts on what I should do before I make any moves this year. Here is the current situation: Emergency funds: 3-4 months of expenses Debt: $348k His student loans: $27.7k@8.25%, $43.5k@7.65%, $41.3k@6.55% Mortgage (former residence, now rental): $148k@6.125% fixed Car Loan: $7.4k @ 4.95% Her student loans: $80.1k@2.625% Tax Filing Status: Married Filing Jointly Tax Rate: 28% Federal, 9.3% State State of Residence: CA Age: Both 31 Desired Asset allocation: 70% stocks / 30% bonds Des...

2010 Cap Gains Tax and Roth IRA Conversion Questions

Dear Bogleheads, I will be leaving the workforce for two years to earn my MBA starting in Aug 2009. My wife just started her third year of residency as an OB/GYN (Residency is 4 years long). I plan to reenter the workforce in May 2010 and my wife plans to start a fellowship in High-Risk OB/GYN at the same time (this means 3 more years of salary near the resident level). These changes all have some interesting implications on our tax situation, particularly in 2010 (I have laid out where we will likely fall in the tax rate section below). Also of note: all of the taxable investments shown below were gifts to my wife from her parents and grandparents throughout my wife’s childhood. I believe this means that the cost basis used to calculate ca...

Brian, thanks for the reply. Was the beginning of your response cut off? I agree, 7% is too low for fixed income. My goal is to achieve 60% domestic stock, 20% international and 20% fixed income (bond) as my allocation. However, I don't like my options in my 401K, which is where the bulk of my investments currently reside. I think I can simplify the question a bit: Is it better to get my stated goal of 60% domestic stock, 20% international stock and 20% bond right away and eat the higher expense ratios of the funds available in my 401K .... OR .... is it better to put all of my 401K money in the Spartan US Equity fund and reduce contributions and simultaneously ramp up my non-401K investments into international and bond funds with the goal ...

27 yo AA Assistance

Hello Bogleheads! Thank you all so much for contributing to this online community. I have been working now for about 4 years and got married to a doctor (intern/first year resident) this past May. For the past four years, I’ve been simply putting money into my 401K as my retirement savings without really looking into the details of the funds themselves. My grandfather gave me Common Sense on Mutual Funds for Christmas, and my eyes have been opened! I have followed that up with Bogle’s Little Book and started reading the Bogleheads’ Guide. Here is our current situation: Emergency Funds: 4 months expenses in credit union savings acct earning 0.95% Debt: 30 year home mortgage @ 5% (Purchased in June ’07 w/ 10% down payment) 5 year car loan @ 5...
