Re: What Experts Say about Individual Stocks vs. Mutual Fund
Owning Index Funds versus a portfolio of individual stocks gives you broader diversification, less transaction costs, and fewer buy/sell decisions. . Wrong, wrong and wrong again ifyoumowned I hold a portfolio of just north of 70 stocks. These were all equal weighted on purchase and my intention is to hold them forever (unless forced to sell by corporate action). The cap weighted index is heavily biased towards a handful of mega-caps which means it is actually less diversified than my portfolio. Once purchased there are no costs associated with my portfolio. After purchase I make no buy/sell decisions. My portfolio takes almost no time and is almost no bother to maintain. I do not track or research the companies after purchase. There is li...

This satisfied them that I had sufficient income after showing them proof of the arrangement. The loan was approved and I cancelled the distributions before the first occurred. Currently looking for idea's on where to deploy dry powder as I am getting a little bit of a mental block at this point on what to do next. I don't know whether to pay down debt or invest as rates are low. If investing, how much? Maybe setup a 529? Just dont think i should be sitting on this much cash. Was waiting again for a drop as things are high now. I usually stay boring but would love to continue to add more Total US and Tech and have been eyeing the below. I really think Tech such as Cloud/Automation/innovation is a great buy. what is the best way to buy insurance for home and two cars
Hello BH
What is the best ways to buy insurance for my home and two cars. Maybe I should check with the consumer report.I don't know how many people believe what the consumer report says.
Should I call an online local insurance agent,or insurance broker, and online sales agent?
Allstate ,geico, progress, state farm, nationwide, online insurance broker mercury, amica, hartford,AAA,AARP, ,,so on.
My car is too old,a 1999 and 2002 Toyota camry , only drive 3 to 4k miles per year, and I may just buy liability only . I also need to know what are the pros and cons of buying liability only
Best wishes

Re: Refinance Mega Thread
Here is my Refinance history so far . Started with 330K mortgage @ 4.5% (July 2018) - 30 year (Provident ) (paid 300/month extra in Principle ) Refinanced 322K @ 3.75% No Cost Mortgage (Feb 2019) -30 year (Caliber Homes then sold to Flagstar Bank) (Paid 500/Month extra in Principle ) Now about to close 312k @ 2.875% No Cost Mortgage ( Potentially March 2020) - 15 Year (With Caliber again but in the application itself they mentioned they intend to sell the loan as soon as its closed ). So far it seem unbelievable as within 20 months i was able to reduce >1.5% in the interest rate without spending anything on closing cost . I am still thinking whether i should have kept it 30 Year @ 3.25% and paid extra every month ?. so who is the best for ...

Re: Please Help Vanguard Taxable Account Asset Allocation
Hi, I am here to try to make my asset allocation in our taxable account improved. I would like to focus on the Vanguard allocation in this taxable account here and will provide some background info/thoughts that hopefully are helpful: The reason for the post is to quickly grow, as safely as reasonably possible, a taxable (accessible) account for home purchase use and/or other necessities. I know some will say that since it is for a future home purpose should have some safety, however I think we need to be aggressive because the average home price where we live is somewhere between 1.2M to 1.6M. Am thinking about making an offer on the HOA home we are renting as soon as we can since it has more square footage and a nice backyard patio in a ...

Re: Car reviews - Consumer Reports or other sources?
Wondering how you rate Consumer Reports, as arbiter of car owner satisfaction and reliability? After cheapskating to Barnes & Noble and looking at Consumer Reports Car Buying Guides, I ended up biting the bullet for monthly subscription to online Consumer Reports. Wondering how good and biased/nonbiased Consumer Reports is -- my parents considered them to be quite definitive, but I don't know if things have changed in recent times. I've been looking at buying guides for New and Used Cars. For instance, for 2017-2019 models, it appears the Toyota RAV4 models have higher reliability but the Honda CRV's have higher owner satisfaction (I know oil dilution is huge). Similarly, Mazda CX5 (and many Subaru models) have greater owner satisfacti...

Hi fellow Bogleheads, I believe to be in a fairly unique financial situation, and I would appreciate hearing what others think. I'm looking for simple and honest financial advice, and I can't think of a better community to ask this question. I've done my best to be concise but comprehensive in describing my situation. Thank you in advance for taking the time to help. Long story short: I just sold ~10m worth of Facebook shares, which are sitting as cash in a brokerage account doing nothing. I have another ~5m worth of Facebook shares, which I'm inclined to keep for now and donate to charity later. Finally I have a couple smaller assets (as explained below), and a large tax bill for next year of ~1.5m. I'd like to start improving my asset al...

Re: [France] First time investor lazy/permanent portfolio advice
Please don't forget that with an Assurance Vie, you get 4600 euros of abatement per year for withdrawal (9200 euros for a couple), starting from the 8th year onwards. This means that if you handle it well, you can withdraw cash from the AV without paying anything, except the 17.2% of social taxes. This makes the AV pretty interesting but you get to choose a very good one from scratch (linxea or swiss life darjeeling) otherwise you dont have access to great ETF and you are screwed. That's a good benefit for sure. But if you have a really large portfolio, then the higher expense ratio of ETFs in an AV would make up the difference. Most AVs have a 0.6% insurer fee and a 0.10% transaction fees on ETFs both ways. So some really rough math shows...

Short term investment grade
Intermediate-term investment grade
Total bond
Total international bond
I'm retired, all taxable and my tax bracket is very low and my time horizon is 5 to 8 years.
Any input or comment would be appreciated.

Re: Cost of mini split installation?
We recently purchased a 2800 sq foot duplex condo in a HCOL area. It is fairly updated, with very recent kitchen/bathrooms/etc, but was not fitted with central air when it was gut renovated most recently about 20 years ago. We cannot do duct work without gut renovation and it would be a waste of money to do that given that the place is fairly nice otherwise. We plan to use Samsung "wind-free" mini splits to provide AC/heat (with hot water baseboard backup). Our HVAC guy has proposed to install 7 total units. There would be 6 ceiling cassette units (two bedrooms, living room, kitchen/dining room, exercise room, office) that integrate nicely into the ceiling and don't look too bad compared to the wall units (which I don't mind, but...

The credit agencies’ websites have information on how to contest any untrue or incorrect information in your credit report.
If the information reported by the credit agency is correct and your credit history suffered as a result, I think 2 options are:
1. Contact the credit agency to see if there is something you can do to have them retract the negative reporting.
2. Research how to repair your credit history
when you say credit agency, it means the credit bureau ?????

russell2000,1000 and S&P 500
Hi BH
How it tracks the market and what is included in the index. --The Russell 2000 and 1000, and S&P 500
What is the difference between the benchmark the S&p 500 and --the Russell 2000, and Russell 1000.-- how it tracks the market. and according to report the Russell ( 8.30%) is better performing than S&P 500( 3.43%) in 2018, and so if invested Russell, more returns than S&P 500 in 2018 I'm right ???.
Thank you for your input.
Best wishes.

your powerful weapon is your investment time horizon for 30 years(30 years old)
2 million to be invested;
VG, 500 indexes 70%
VG total international stock 20%
VG muni index 10%
and go fishing and take nap on the beach in sunny day

Re: Wash sale question
If the shares you sell in taxable are at a loss you will have a wash sales. The loss is disallowed and the cost basis of the replacement shares should be adjusted accordingly. However since the buy and sell are in separate accounts the broker is relived from making/reporting the adjustment. That lack of reporting requirement on the brokers reporting does not negate the fact that a wash sale did occur and you cannot deduct the loss in taxable. I avoid the situation. I would buy the replacement shares in a similar but not exactly the same as the fund I sold. To avoid the wash sale the buy/sell must be 30 days apart not only one. Maybe I need to rephrase since your answer had information that didn't quite fit what I had intended to convey. :D...
