Re: Quick Visit to San Francisco Recommendations
Parking at the Stockton Garage is okay during the day. Definitely don't street park if you have one single item in the car.
Walking around Union Square, Chinatown, North Beach, and the Ferry Building is a good time vacuum. You'll find so many good food, snack, and drink spots along the way.

I agree that safety is more important than saving dollars.
Since I have many months before needing to replace my tires, I have the luxury to save dollars if I can anticipate a favorable time to buy.
Also, I'm opting for higher quality tires too, so I hope there's more incentives in my price range.

Best time to buy tires
Please share your thoughts or anecdotes on the best month/event to buy a new set of tires.
I researched April and October are popular months for tire deals, but have also heard that Memorial Day weekend is good time to replace tires. I don't replace tires often, so curious if you observe any trends from your experiences.
I'm not so much interested in where to buy (Tire Rack vs. America's vs. Costco), but when to strike on replacing tires. I don't need to urgently change my tires, but should change my tires by the end of next year. Cheers.

Re: Refinance Mega Thread
Hello again, refi newbie with one more request, please. I have Better and LenderFI competing against each other.
If lender credits are greater than the closing costs, then am I eligible to receive a check for the 'cash back to the borrower?' I opted to pay for any closing costs rather than lump into my new mortgage.
LenderFI consultant told me that borrowers will never receive a check for refinancing.
Better consultant told me that I would receive the net credit as a check.
Can anyone please confirm from their experience? I cannot be the only who has ever had lender credits greater than closing costs. Thanks!

Re: Refinance Mega Thread
I'm a refi newbie, and reviewed my 30-year fixed loan estimate with Better.
Can anyone please explain why the loan estimate contains 'other costs' prepaid property taxes and insurance if I opted out of escrow? Also, is six months of prepaids standard for Better's closing costs? After looking through Google searches and old Bogle threads, I've got nothing still.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Chase Sapphire Reserve retention offer - was worth the effort
I had a 6-minute call on the U.S. line, and connected with an agent after 3 minutes of automated responses. The agent's system was unresponsive, so she transferred me to a colleague at the 5-minute mark. I waited one additional minute on hold before hanging up to call the international number.
I had a 2-minute call on the international line. No retention credits on my card (shucks)! I asked if new offers are added on the 1st of the month, and the agent said he cannot guarantee new offers are added.
Best of luck to everyone else.

Planning for Layoff: Communicate my status?
Hello All, For context, management announced today that they will discuss one-on-one with each person in my 90-person team tomorrow about their role in the new org structure. Everyone (including me) believes there will be headcount reduction. I've followed the recent layoff threads (wishing all of you the best out there whether you're impacted or not), and I'm wondering if I can/should notify some friends outside my current department if I'm laid off. These friends are all in a different department of my megacorp that I recently transitioned from, and they would not hear about layoffs in my new/current department. My goals are to inform and thank all of my old friends, and also start (or hint at) a conversation with one or two of them about...

Re: "Why are you leaving your current job?"
In one unsuccessful job interview, I made the mistake of answering this question with 'limited career opportunities.' Some interviewers may see this as lack of initiative or possibly not being liked in the company to be a priority at the company. Or, as I learned later from the interviewer, he doesn't care when people 'complain' about their companies. YMMV.
I've turned this question into why I want to be at the new company. 'There's opportunities in this industry/company that motivate me... yada yada'

Re: Car rentals, what is the catch?
There was just recently a thread about car rentals. I use autoslash.com to find prices. You fill out a form with details, including all discounts you might bge eligible for. Soon you get an email with prices for most all chains. Pick what you want, click, and make a reservation via priceline. Autoslash lets you sign up for updates on costs. I have used them several times. Always much better than I could get direct. For Autoslash, I read the 'how it works,' and clicked through autoslash to get to priceline. I have one question on the priceline part: have you had a bad experience with any of your reservations? It seems like you get a car from one of the well-known companies except you don't know which one at the priceline reservation. The au...

Re: How do you know what price to negotiate when buying a used car?
Nice job starting with the KBB range. The dealers will have suggested prices for their cars, but their prices will include mark ups (i.e. mark-to-market adjustment, transportation fees, their service/labor fees, etc). Take your time and check out the car - see what you don't like about the car.
Based on what you think the lowest realistic price you can pay for the car is, ask if the dealer will consider your price. Never hurts to ask! Has always helped me in used car negotiations. I remember I offered a few hundred dollars lower than the dealer's "lowest" price, and the dealer acquiesced rather easily. At that moment I knew I should've offered lower but I was comfortable paying the final price.

From other community forums I frequently check, burglars often case neighborhoods to effectively steal before security shows up. My neighbor lives alone, works evenings, and has an ADT home security system. The neighbor's home was burglarized around 8PM via window smash, and the burglars left the front door open and alarm ringing on their way out. IMO, alarm systems are okay deterrents, but a more effective deterrent is visible cameras that catch people's faces. This assists law enforcement or security. It's surprising how often I see burglars not wearing masks when people post pictures/video. I realize that if someone wants to get into your house, then they will. The best thing I can do is make it very difficult (i.e. lock windows and door...

Flew Norwegian OAK to Stockholm (ARN), ARN to Amsterdam (AMS), and Copenhagen (CPN) to OAK.
OAK TO ARN: Full flight, but flew on the modern 787 Dreamliner. I purchased the low fare ticket because I wanted to bring my own food/drink. I basically got on the flight, was left alone/ignored for 11 hours, and then walked off the plane. I paid for what I wanted, and would do it again.
ARN TO AMS: Nothing noteworthy, was like a Southwest flight without food/drink.
CPN TO OAK: Great flight just like OAK TO ARN. However, only 50-60% full. Did not have a person sitting in the middle of my row, and so many people had rows to themselves that they slept across the seats.

Re: Job Offer, What Should I Do
If you're able to land a better offer, then by all means renege and take the better offer. You will 'burn a bridge' but you'll be in a better position for yourself, which is ultimately more important. 1) Career advancement - probably most important is learning skills that you can transfer to senior/manager levels. When you want to leave your first job, your skills will be the most important in interviewing for new positions (and a referral doesn't hurt either). 2) Salary - you definitely want to be adequately compensated or come in at market level even if it's an entry level gig. Your first salary isn't as important as the skills/advancement opportunities. 3) Other things - commute, coworkers, work/life balance. I consider these less import...
