The only thing that I'm 'sure' about with respect to fees is that TDA will not charge any transfer fees if your brokerage account was established through HSA Bank.

So once you hit 59 1/2, there are no restrictions on rolling over into a Roth IRA, regardless of when it was established, and regardless of employment status?

One more data point on transfer fees from the TD Ameritrade side. In most cases, a $50 fee is incurred, but for some reason, if your TDA account was established via HSA Bank, there is no transfer fee.

HSA Bank allowed me to request a transfer of my entire cash balance to TD Ameritrade. I'll know Monday if it went through without any issues.

Assets held in a ROTH 401k are subject to RMDs. Assets held in a ROTH IRA are not. Once you are no longer contributing to a ROTH 401k, you can roll it over into a ROTH IRA to avoid it being included in your RMD calculations.

I just received a secure message from my Fidelity rep: He said that the assets from TD Ameritrade will come over online, but HSA Bank requires a hand signature for their TOA form. Fidelity is overnighting that document to me, and providing an overnight mailer for me to use for return.

Just posting this to clarify a previous post that mentioned APEX level at TDA. The tiered system vanished after they merged with Scott-Trade earlier this year, so I may be hit with an account closure fee.

I didn't ask my rep about selling my Vanguard ETFs on the Fido side as I just plan on holding them...if you want/need to sell, my experience has been that they're usually OK with crediting back commissions as long as you don't ask them to comp too many.

I use TD Ameritrade for my HSA through HSA Bank. Although they used to offer commission-free trading for many Vanguard ETFs, their current menu offers numerous choices of commission-free ETFs/mutual funds that are still consistent with a Boglehead philosophy.

With a 30 year time horizon, I would put it all into equities. Over that time span, you should come out way ahead over a 100% bond portfolio. Just my .02.
TDA has several commission-free, low cost stock market index funds to choose from.
