When we bought our first house. It was a mental struggle for me. It wasn't that it was a financial burden, but I was constantly spending money on things for the house and it really took a toll on me.

We relocated for work and now we rent again. I'm much happier.

I consider my savings rate to be only money that goes into retirement accounts. Everything else is just being saved to be spent at a later date in the relatively short term (compared to retirement).

So (money invested for retirement) / (gross income).
