Re: Help with what to do with drafty fireplace

Fair enough, JHarkin -- and I would note that I live in Washington State, and it's really bad.

Too many air inversions that really make for chronic respiratory irritation.

Re: Help with what to do with drafty fireplace

Humans have lived around fire for 50,000 years. It did not suddenly become a health epidemic yesterday. Fireplaces do NOT have to be smoky and polluting. The problem is 90% of people use them wrong, and smoulder cold fires of wet wood that makes smoke. Use it right, burn hot with DRY wood, and bett...

Re: Help with what to do with drafty fireplace

Asthma sufferers in your neighborhood are going to look at you sideways. Fireplace smoke is the absolute worst for production of PM 2.5 particles that get deep in the lungs. I will personally never live in another neighborhood with older homes. So yeah, by all means, do what is financially expedient...

Re: Denver or Portland for a 2nd home

Congrats and welcome to PDX. Just a note that the Pearl District isn't quite as bike friendly as the hype would have you believe.

Take special care around the Portland Streetcar tracks. They'll eat your tire and send you into the pavement.

Re: Securing work computer and USB drive

I work in IT, and we don't even have PCs as such, they're virtual view image Windows clients. Usage of USB keys is highly discouraged (they'd cringe if they saw my Yubikey insertion), since they're an attack vector.

For personal documents, I use OneDrive and then encrypt with BoxCryptor.

Re: Trip to Norway - Aurora vs. Fjords

I went in late April, early May of this year, and the fjords are beautiful -- we probably spent too much time in Oslo (it was too short of a trip period), when Bergen is the place to be. I'm glad I didn't miss the Russ season (look it up, it's a hoot). If I had to do all over again, I would not have...

Re: HSA expenses

I'm not sure how your custodian works, but typically the contribution has to post prior to the expense.

Think of the HSA as a pre-tax checking account.

Re: Getting Married and Living in Separate States

I think Oregon only cares about the income earned in Oregon. For example, I'm a Washington state resident, but I earn my income while working in Oregon, so I pay OR income tax.

Re: 401K Global bond fund or Fidelity funds?

I guess I would question the need for international bonds at all. You're just taking on a load of currency risk, unless you have access to BNDX (Vanguard Total International Bond). And 30% BBB rated? Do you want that kind of risk in your fixed income allocation? And by looking at the holdings, it's ...

Re: New tires - where to buy, how to get a good deal?

I just purchased new tires last week. I compared all the usual sites (Tire Rack is the most informative), but I ended up purchasing from Tire Buyer. Good coupons, rebates, shopping portal points, etc. Tire Buyer will ship in 1 to 2 days to your local Firestone.

Re: How do you buy health insurance these days?

If you make too much to be eligible for the premium subsidy, there's no reason to shop through the public exchange as their premiums will actually tend to be higher. In 2015, the private exchanges are a better bet, and anecdotally, I personally was able to move from a Bronze HSA to a Silver HSA for ...

Re: Living in Vancouver WA?

I guess it's all what you value. For me, since I work out in Washington County, eliminating the commute and having access to tons of good restaurants is important. I'd even go as far away as Orenco just to be close to the light rail line for easy access into Portland when desired. For those with kid...

Re: Living in Vancouver WA?

For an empty nester such as myself who works in Washington County, but lives in Vancouver, it's pretty much the worst place to live. There's nothing to do, no parks, no amenities, no public transportation, everything is a drive. Admittedly, I live on the NW side, so you're definitely better off livi...

Re: Client Not Letting Independent Contractor Use LLC?

What part of "independent contractor" does this client not understand? The IRS is pretty strict about what defines an independent contractor, things like bringing your own computers to work, etc. If they're not doing that, then they're essentially making you pay the payroll tax liability while still...

Re: Voya 401k advice

Voya's offerings are truly paltry while the expense ratios are jaw dropping. When I see their TV advertising with the butterflies made out of money, my thoughts are that those butterflies are a metaphor for all the expenses I'm paying. What I could not figure out is their disclosure sheets don't lis...
