Depreciation items in Form 8829 using HRBlock

I have more than 10 entries to make for depreciation, but the HR Block form doesn't seem to allow me to make additional entries.

I'm for the first time using the HR Block downloaded software version and I'm trying to enter all the depreciated items for my home office that I've accumulated over the many years of having the office. A new roof and a new furnace are some of the examples of home office items that I depreciate.

When I go to the "Whole Form" it also has only 10 entries possible. There's an option to have Copy 2 of the "Whole Form". But it's not clear what to do with that form, or whether that form is supposed to be used to add additional depreciation entries?

Re: Solo 401K post-tax account questions (plus FAFSA)

I'm not sure I understand the question about whether there is a point in maxing out the Roth.

I know that there is an annual addition limit that maximizes how much can be put into the solo 401k in which all the various contributions, pre-tax and post-tax can't exceed a specified limit.

I think it's a good idea to do the amount for the Roth that you can figure out now for 2021 tax year. The reason to do it now is because there may be changes that prohibit a post-tax to Roth conversion in the 2022 calendar year. I believe there's a post on the Finance Buff blog about this.

Profit Sharing Plan ?

A certified financial planner said that there’s a profit sharing plan that a business owner can create that shelters income from taxes. The feature of this plan is that it isn’t limited to being 25% of business income. I’m a self employed sole proprietor and I currently have the individual 401k plan.
But I’ve never heard of a profit sharing plan that can shelter up to the annual addition limit of income (58,000) and is not impacted by the employer contribution restriction of 25% of the business income.

Has anyone else heard of such a profit sharing plan?

Do I need 2 Solo 401K plans?

I already have a Solo 401k plan for a Schedule C business, sole proprietorship.

In 2020 I started working as a Shipt shopper, and this is not related to my original Schedule C business.

Apparently, I have to file a separate Schedule C because of the earnings I made from working as a shopper.

Am I allowed to use my Solo 401k plan for the Shipt shopper Schedule C earnings?
Or was I supposed to open up a separate plan for that?
And if I can't use the Solo 401k plan then is there any way to shelter earnings from the Shipt Shopper Schedule C ? For example am I allowed to have a SEP IRA for the Shipt shopper Schedule C business earnings while using the Solo 401k plan for the other Schedule C business?

My PPP amount just hit my business checking account.

I'm in the same boat as GasDoc.

I will just give myself a monthly payroll - I'll probably use a check. The payroll will be based on the amount used in the application for which the PPP loan amount was determined.

I might just use the business checking account debit card to pay the business utilities, etc.

Re: Stimulus help for small businesses, sole proprietors, s-corp etc

Anyone know the answer to this question, previously posed by simas: How will a sole proprietor show that the PPP money was used for payroll, which is a requirement for loan forgiveness? Write a check from your business account to your personal account. What if you don't even have a separate business account? I just keep expenses in a folder for the year and deduct them on schedule C. The money will be deposited directly into my personal checking account. gasdoc I think your Schedule SE, which is the self employment taxes you pay based on your Schedule C business profit is essentially your payroll information for the sole proprietor - self employed individual. I got this idea from Harry Sit's the Finance Buff blog post. https://thefinancebu...

At such a high tax bracket I would think you'd be better off deferring paying tax and go ahead and put money in the employer contribution.

When your wife makes the EmployeE contribution she should take into account the social security taxes that should be deducted off of the self-employed business profit.

I would keep the investment allocation very simple, like a three fund portfolio. I would do it through Vanguard, and Vanguard will help you with organizing it. As it turns out many pension funds got into all these complicated investments, like private equity, metals, and other complex stuff. However these complex portfolios were more expensive to construct and maintain and they were outperformed by simpler plans that merely contained the total stock market index and total bond market index. The only one I know who outperforms the simple portfolios is David Swensen who manages Yale's endowment. But you're never going to know in advance whether you have a person as capable as David Swensen, and the chances of finding him are rare. You can jus...

Re: Deduct independent contractor mileage?

Yes to everything Jonny B said.

I keep a mileage log and I document all miles driven, both personal and business.

Business mileage includes things like driving to a bank to deposit my business earnings, going to Target to buy supplies, driving to a client's location to conduct business, or driving to another office location to conduct business as well.

There was a ruling by a tax judge that said something to the effect that driving from your home office to another place of business counted as business mileage.

Also, in training to become a tax volunteer, some of the materials provided by IRS for training gave an example of deductible business miles including driving from a W-2 job to a 2nd location for self employed business purposes.

Q2 - That is the easiest to answer. Yes that mileage is most definitely deductible. Q3 - The mileage between locations for the W-2 job is deductible, but it's deductible on Schedule A, not on your side business Schedule C. The deduction may be too small to be of value, and the formula for it should be explained in the Schedule A instructions. Q1 - I think that's deductible but not 100% sure since you don't have an office in home. If the storage space was it's own separate room or maybe even closet, that is only devoted to the use of the business, then you can claim that space as a business office. The secure file cabinet I use is devoted just to the business. If I put it in a closet would that change things? Is there a room in your house t...

I won a $10,000 settlement from Discover card over a federal anti-discrimination law (specifically, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act). The lawyer keeps $4,500 of that, and I get $5,500. My lawyer writes: "First, on 1099s, chances are you won't get one at all. I don't have an obligation to send one. While Discover does have that obligation, it's my experience that they won't. Second, on taxability. My understanding of the law is that the full 10k is taxable. There used to be a misc. itemized deduction for attorney's fees, but I believe that was removed with the 2018 tax law. However, I think the entirety of my fees could be deductible above the line because our case was one arising under a federal anti-discrimination law (specifically, ...

I have seen election wording suggested along the lines of “I elect to contribute 100% of compensation up to the compensation limits...” rather than specifying a % (like 15%) or dollar amount. Is that not acceptable? Sure, if you know you are always going to contribute 100% of your compensation up to the contribution limit, electing to contribute 100% is all you need to do. I was just referring to some people where the self-employment is their only source of income. They may have a savings retirement rate and limited compensation that will not allow them to reach the limit. I view the election in writing by 12/31/19 as impacting the timing of the contribution in that it allows one to contribute by the 2020 filing date rather than foregoing ...

Depending on how much you're planning to spend your effective tax rate is really closer to 7% as far as federal goes.

You have to take into account that you'll have a standard deduction, and then layers of tax rates that start at 10%, and go successively higher.

Discountsolo401k has a salary deferral election form that you fill out by the end of the year for the following year. In this form you determine how much you will be saving for deferral.

If you will be doing the megabackdoor roth then there is also an In-Plan Roth Conversion Form that you fill out.

I keep a record of all contributions to Pre-tax, After-tax, and in Plan Roth on a spreadsheet. Pre-tax consists of salary deferrals and employer contributions.

Don't accidentally overcontribute to the Employer contribution, before you know the correct amount you're supposed to contribute. SpiritRider has written a lot about the danger of this.

A healthy amount of inflation is good for the economy because it makes debt worth less, and therefore permits the burden of that debt to become less onerous over time.
IF the Federal Reserve raises interest rates too much too quickly then inflation stays low for too long and the debt burden continues on as a drag that prevents more consumption/demand.

Do you pay state income tax? If your marginal rate is 5% a new 13-week T-bill at 2.18% has a taxable equivalent yield of 2.30%. By end of next week probably more like 2.25% and 2.37% TEY (assuming 5% state tax rate). If you have a regular non-retirement brokerage account at Schwab, Fidelity, Vanguard or some others you can but T-bills at auction for no fees or commissions. No need for a seperate Treasury Direct account and gets rid of the need for an on-line bank account if you have one just for better yields on cash. I buy 13-week t-bills at 4-5 week intervals so my cash is: 25% Prime Money Market 75% in 13-week t-bills with 25% maturing in 4 weeks, 25% in 8 weeks and 25% in 13 weeks. I'm keeping things short on account of 3 big-ticket it...

I was surprised at how progressive the plot became given that it takes place in the mid 19th century.

For those suggesting I file a police report - would I do that in the county/area I live in? I ask, because I live between 2 counties in 2 states - and may have mailed it from either one.
Based on the previous post it sounds like federal authorities, FBI, Postmaster need to have reports.
Would you recommend I let my bank know before I submit that report? Sorry if that's a dumb question.
Yes the more communication the better.

I've seen absolutely no advertising or information regarding the open enrollment.
I got one very curt email from healthcare.gov regarding 2019.
That’s by design. Promotion, advertising and facilitation has been cut to the bone. It’s almost as if the government didn’t want you to know about the program
Well I will follow this like a hawk, and I will reapply for the ACA, and help others as well, and take full advantage of the premium tax subsidies.
