The benefit of running the fan on recirculation is to make the space more comfortable and uniform temperature.
The thermostat is most likely on the wall, maybe 4ft/5ft off the ground. The unit doesn't know that, though, and if the thermostat thinks it is cold, it will turn on the heat until it is satisfied. Depending on the heat load of the space, turning on the fan, may mix enough heat from those tall ceilings to not need to turn on the heat or at least not as much, saving energy, and creating a more comfortable space.

It may be more of a google accounts settings that need to be updated.
I would try to log into your google account from a computer and look in those profile/account settings for references to your old employer. I'm thinking it will be under Security.

Re: Health Coverage & Non-FMLA Maternity Leave
I believe FMLA is state dependent. What state are you in?
For the state of Massachusetts, she would still be eligible if she’s been working and paying into the system, regardless of employer (employer independent).
I just went through FMLA after starting a new job as well. I have been employed for years, then changed jobs within the state to become a contractor for two months, then got brought on as full time employee for one month, then paternity leave for one month.
I would call your state FMLA helpline to help clarify. They were helpful to me.

Do you have any preferences to 401k, IRAs, or other tax-advantaged accounts that you might have or create?
You could also define the bonds ETF or Index, even if you don’t currently have them.
Do you have a “FIRE” number that might trigger a more conservative approach or reward?

Not knowing anything more than what you said (income, age, family, hopes & dreams), I would think that $1k a month, $12k a year opens up a great amount of possible investing and financial flexibility.

I need some help understanding how or if I can execute a backdoor Roth conversion for 2019. I was fortunate to have a great year and have an MAGI greater than the limit for direct Roth IRA contributions. I work full time (earned income >$12k and wife does not). Wife: - Traditional IRA: None - Roth IRA: ~$20k, Not touches this year (2019). - 401k: None Myself: - Traditional IRA: ~20k, not touched this year (2019). - Roth IRA: ~$20k, not touched this year (2019). - 401k: Contributed this year (2019). 1) Could I open a new traditional IRA account, contribute 6k as a non-deductible contribution, and then convert the IRA to a Roth IRA without applying the pro-rata rule and dealing with the 20k from my existing tIRA? Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. (I actually listened to the book through Audible)
Now, it got me in the thinking of saving, investing, and changed my way of thinking. I did read more books from that "product line" of Rich Dad Poor Dad, but I did not pay for a class, lecture, or advisor. Those are traps.
The book got me expanding my look of investing, brought me to the Intelligent Investor and other personal finance books, took me to BiggerPockets.com and also brought me here after a friend's suggestion after discussing this book.

Re: Taking over a Business
1) I would make sure you think about what will happen to new and old business. I would make sure you outline if the subcontractor starts working for another business contact that you made, how does the fee get broken up. She probably doesn't deserve 100% of the $3, but maybe say $1 of the $10.
Remember, you are taking all of the risks and doing all of the work. Maybe you can cap the royalty at a number. Say after paying out 1500 hours worked in royalties to her, you decrease the royalty from $3 to $1/hr. (Think bonus, turnover, and possibly salary increase likelihood of your subcontractor.)
I would also suggest a time limit. Such as after 3 years, the royalty decreases to $1/hr. After two more years, it decreases to $0/hr.

+1 to money.
With my wedding just this past year, We think the most highly of the ones that either gave us a gift from the registry or wrote a check (large or small).
Don’t give him and his wife something you think they want. They might already have something in its place, try to live as minimalists, or will not like it. Then it becomes awkward if they want to return the gift but might not if he thinks you may get offended if you don’t see it when you visit.

Re: Buying $20k worth of mortgage points.
I'm actually surprised what some people here are saying. I think the much better idea is to follow the original meaning of the gift and put it in the downpayment. You could "put" that 20k in the downpayment and you just put in 20k less. Up to you. The major benefit for adding to your downpayment is that when you sell the house, you will get it back as part of the proceeds from the sale. It's not gone. Points would be gone after the sale, since your mortgage gets resolved. Odds are, you are not going to stay in that house for 30 years. In this kind of economy, if you lived in your house for more than 10-15 years (current approximate average of US homeowners), you would surprise me. You may love it, your family may love it, you may ...

Re: How far before move-in date should I sign an apartment lease to get the best price (Boston area)
As someone who lives in one of those apartment buildings, I would do it fairly soon. My lease requires us to provide notice of 60 days before our lease expires if we want to sign a new lease. They send out reminders 90 days in advance. So if someone is moving out, they will probably provide notice between 90 and 60 days with some rare ones being just 30 day notice (if month to month).
Also, I have had GREAT luck negotiating with the management. I would encourage you to do so.

Re: Engineer Co-op question
You have a perfectly fine GPA at this point in engineering school. Engineering GPAs are lower than arts & sciences GPAs. I do agree that GPA is fine. I think 3.4, 3.2, and 3.0 seemed to be used as cutoffs for entry-level jobs and leadership programs. However, Don't listen to this. It is REALLY easy to start thinking that a B is okay and not put in the effort for that A. I caught myself several times through college doing this and taking the easy road. Unfortunately, people still get A's in engineering and people can have a 4.0 GPA and close to it. You will be competing against them for the rest of your life. Have no regrets. Keep grinding it out. The higher the GPA, the easier it will be to get a job/co-op and what not. Put in the extr...

I had a tough time finding a job right out of college as well. It is a lot harder than what everyone says, especially the Professors. There's always the "oh, you're an engineer! You'll be fine." It is hard to not listen to them for 4 years. I suggest: [*] Polishing up his Linkedin. [*] Change his "title" on Linkedin to "Aspiring Industrial Engineer" or something similar. [*] Have him connect on Linkedin with his friends and his friends' parents even if they are not engineers. It might produce some interviews or profile/resume views. I got my first and second job this way. [*] Take note of the local companies that would be very convenient commute from home and browse their websites or walk in with some resumes i...

Have you considered anything other than the condition of the room? While in a SNF, the patient may be receiving PT or OT therapy sessions. Talk to those therapists to get a good understanding of how they treat their patients depending on what kind of insurance the patient receives. They do treat them differently in terms of what they are required to do vs not. There are requirements of 1-on-1 time frequency vs group therapy sessions frequency. You may also want to understand the SNF management environment. It seems like insurance is determining the care the patient receives. The PTs/OTs are graded by their efficiency rates and how many billable hours they have with patients. If insurance determines that the patient doesn't need more PT or O...

If the building is pet free....I'm not sure how I would feel about antifreeze in the pipes. Is this a common solution? I don't agree with your argument against the antifreeze. We are talking about a building sprinkler system that is only activated when the temperature is about 155F. Unlike the movies, the sprinklers are activated only when that particular sprinkler head senses 155F and only that one opens up. They don't all open all at once. Re: Sump Pump Issues - What can I do, if anything?
Your water table idea could be an interesting factor to this problem. However, before attempting, ensure that the check valve is operating properly. It could very well be dysfunctioning and causing water to go back to the pump and require to be pumped again. I would also make sure the check valve placed properly as well. Too far or too close to the pump is no good.
Another thing, your sump pump may be underpowered as well. I would check the lines for restrictions.

Do you know if they used spray foam insulation?
I have heard of improper installations of the spray foam insulation where the insulation was still curing when the drywall was applied. This caused the foam to outgas and cause a hazardous chemical odor.

One thing that comes to mind is a trust. Perhaps as your lawyer to explain.

Re: Cruising to Bermuda in May...
I was in Bermuda last May. It was really nice. I don't recommend taking the bus. They are not frequent so you may have to wait a while for them. Everyone on the cruise tries to take the bus and you will be packed in with everyone all hot and sweaty with suntan lotion as a lubricant.
Take a van. They will have vans located at the port that can get you to and from all of the points of interest. My cruise ship had chartered a free ferry to go all the way to St. George. That was nice and a different kind of place to walk around for a couple of hours.
The sand of their famous Horseshoe bay isn't very pink anymore, but it is still THE beach to go to.

Re: AC/Furnace Questions- 1 stage or 2 stage?
I would like to suggest you get the two-stage 120,000 furnace. With only the first stage running, you should be generating enough heat for the forst floor and it should run long enough to have heat reach the upper level. With a single stage, you are blasting a ton of heat or none at all. For comfort, generally the longer the a/c or furnace runs, the better. I would be careful comparing other houses with yours. The furnace and AC capacity depends on your climate, the materials your house is made of, indirect/Direct sunlight, and how your house is constructed (split level vs colonial, retrofitted forced air vs built with forced air). I believe if you are curious, you can get a thermal analysis of your house done by a mechanical engineer, whic...

Re: Vacation in May. Boston, Martha's Vineyard, Bar Harbor
Since you are by Fenway already, do a tour of Fenway. Its cool and not terribly expensive. Also, check out the MFA and the Isabella Steward Gardner Museum. Since your daughter is a student, it is significantly cheaper for her to go too. Both are very close to where your daughter lives. I would make sure I walk or run around the Charles River Esplanade. It's pretty. You can make a stop at the Boston Public Garden too to see the swan boats and the bend where Robin Willaims and Matt Damon did some scenes in the movie "Good Will Hunting". I suggest taking the T or Ubering to Harvard Square in Cambridge. You can walk into the quad and rub John Harvard's shoe. Harvard Square has a different personality that the rest of Boston. Going to ...

Re: App for contacts
I think the easiest way to keep track is through your Notes app on your iphone (Android probably has one too, I am just not familiar with it).
I would create a folder within the app and start a note with the last name of the family, "Smith". Then within the note, I would list off the parents' names, the kids' names and what they are up too and what kid of your is interacting with them.
Next, if you are curious what Sammy's last name is and who is his mom, you could do a quick search for Sammy within the Notes app.
Oh, and you can access this on the computer too by going to icloud.com.

Re: Tenants want to break lease early and is pregnant
The number 1 thing is don't break the law. In most states, security deposits are to only cover physical damages , not lost rent or late payments. It is not your money to pay their rent with, only to cover damages beyond normal wear and tear. For examples, changing a 10 year old carpet shouldn't be paid for by their security deposit, but a 1 year old carpet should be paid for by their security deposit if left stains throughout the bedrooms. The law over rules over what ever your lease says or they agreed to (you can't agree to break the law). I know in MA, if the landlord mishandles the security deposit, the renter is owed 3x the full security deposit immediately. That's a nice chunk of change. Next, what does your lease state? Do you have a...

Re: Rental Sell or Keep Decision help
Have you increased the rent over the past 5 years? That could be why it is only a 5% ROI. It is very common to increase the rent every year 2-3%. If they have lived there for 5 years, they might not want to move over less than a $100/month increase.
It may be worth a talk to your property manager or real estate agent to see what the current rate is. It could be surprising and make a better outcome for you.

Re: Financial Hole
I don't want to be the bad guy, but if your pets are cats or dogs, I would suggest giving them up to adoption. They are another financial burden that you can't provide for any long. You have to provide them with food, vet visits, toys, beds, litter, and time too! Best case, maybe you can give it over to a friend or family member so that you can still get to see them every time you are over. Maybe after you get back on your feet, you can take them back.
EDIT: In addition, your landlord may be charging you more to have a pet. By passing off the pets, you could move to a smaller apartment or find another cheaper place due to them not allowing pets. This could save you a good amount of money per month.
