Re: Can't log on [to Vanguard website]

Updating on my experience today. My original post which was merged into this thread here https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7493613#p7493613 Spent two hours on hold after calling in around 9 AM ET today. Spoke with an "account maintenance representative" who guided me through the process of removing the block via MANY security questions involving my history with Vanguard, types of accounts with them, even asked about my beneficiaries on the accounts. Once the block was removed they guided me through recreating an online account, which went smoothly. Was able to log in and verify that all the various accounts were linked and accessible. Unlike a previous poster here, my account was not placed under a 14 day restrictio...

Re: Can't log on [to Vanguard website]

Here I sit, on a Sunday morning, questioning why I should have to wake up at 5am so I can call Vanguard first thing in the morning to possibly get my account access unlocked. Yes, us Pacific time people get screwed by the 8am est opening. Do I have any right to ask for incentive/compensation for my hardships? Like everyone else said, there is absolutely no communication to this day from Vanguard. If my account did have fraud, I would want to be contacted or at least given a phone number that actually got me to a person. That's what's happened multiple times with my Amex card, and it was always resolved incredibly quickly. I'm extremely frustrated because I do keep my money market account at Vanguard in VUSXX, and if there are emergencies b...

Word of Caution: Diversify Your Brokerage Accounts (Vanguard Issues)

[Thread merged into here --admin LadyGeek] A couple of days ago I got a nice surprise when trying to log into my Vanguard account; https://i.imgur.com/PVmKgkY.png I go to the Android app on my phone, use my biometric login.....same error Type in password manually in Android App "Your account access has been disabled, contact us immediately" After a very long hold time, the customer service rep notified me that my account was flagged for review by the Vanguard "research team" and someone would get back to me in *72 business hours*, that's 9 business days folks....... Re: Anyone here CoastFIRE’d?

The third is related to the second. If I had started to "coast" in my prime working years and, retrospectively, that hadn't turned out and led to financial distress later in life, I wouldn't have wanted to look into the eyes of DW or my children and explain why I chose leisure during my prime working years over doing everything I could then to ensure their financial stability. I didn't want my son to ever ask "I wonder why Dad was fishing at age 41 instead of working to help pay for my college?" I never wanted to face that question. And that is why I have kept slogging. You bring up some valid and great points, and it comes down to individual risk tolerance and fulfillment. When you're on your death bed, only you will b...

Re: Gap Year, Sabbatical, Leave of Absence - Questioning My Sanity

OP here, with an update on how things went for any of the people who offered thoughtful advice over the past few years and may see this. Our trip was cut short after 8 months due to Covid-19 making travel very difficult. We returned to the USA nearly a year ago, both finding jobs within 2-3 weeks. We did take an initial pay cut, but over the past 12 months one of us got a promotion while the other switched employers and are both earning more than we were prior to taking the year off work. While the stock market crash in early 2020 was scary without an income, we didn't sell and see our overall net worth up over 20% pre-crash levels today. Currently sitting around 22X actual annual expenses in our HCOL area. The plan is to work for another 1...

Re: Anyone here CoastFIRE’d?

DW and I did something along these lines at the end of 2019. We hit ~20X expenses and took a year off to travel (great timing, right?). After 8 months in Europe we came back to the USA and both found jobs quickly (business development in mid-sized tech), albeit for a paycut compared to where we were before we left. A year later, our incomes have surpassed their pre sabbatical high water mark. Now the plan is to alternate working and playing throughout our late 30's to early 50's. Based on very conservative math we should arrive at 33X expenses with 50% time working and 50% time not working over the next 20 years. This thread is depressing, because it's an echo chamber of people who would rather slog it for decades to mitigate every possible...

Withholding is irrelevant in your case. You could get a quick chart of what taking anywhere from $0 to $43K would do for federal and (perhaps) state taxes by using the 2020 version of the personal finance toolbox if you have even a little Excel ability. If not that, see US and state income tax calculator - Bogleheads.org for other suggestions. You still have a little time in 2020.... Thank you, I will try those resources out. Feeling pretty crappy about my lack of understanding/clarity on the matter. Some additional info from me; W2/Unemployment = $29,730 Interest = $4720 Taxable Dividends = ~$2,000 Total Taxable Income = ~$36,500 Unrealized Long Term Capital Gains in taxable brokerage account = $43,200 Since we contributed the full amount...

I made this mistake before, but then made an even worse mistake with the recharachterization/conversion. Be careful that you don't already have a T/Rollover IRA, or you could hit pro-rata rules that leave you with a surprise tax bill.

Last Minute Help - Savers Credit + LTCG Questions/Case Study

Scenario DW and I were decently high income earners (~$170k/yr past 5 years) but took a sabbatical in 2020. Our combined gross income from all sources for 2020 will only be ~$38k. We live in NY if that matters, and filing MFJ. I have $43k in unrealized, long term capital gains in my brokerage account. We both maxed out our Roth IRA's for 2020. It's my understanding that we will qualify for a $2,000 Saver's Tax Credit, but not entirely sure how the "non-refundable" credit works. Meaning, if we paid/had withheld less than $2k in federal taxes, we will not get a $2,000 refund? Let's assume that our withholdings on the $30k of W-2 income were approximately correct, and we have $5-10k dollars in qualified dividends (same brokerage acc...

Re: Gap Year, Sabbatical, Leave of Absence - Questioning My Sanity

Well, I guess I owe anyone who was following this thread an update! We flew out of NYC on March 11th and landed in Porto. No issues with our one way tickets. Shortly after arriving in Portugal the country entered a state of emergency. We headed down to Lisbon after 5 days, and we've been here ever since! Our parents and siblings are back in NYC metro area, and my extended family is in Poland. We feel so lucky to have made it out of NY when we did, but had to scrap the rest of Europe due to the pandemic/travel restrictions. We are hunkered down here in a nice 1 bedroom/1.5 bath apartment with full kitchen and balcony until June 7th, at which time we plan to make the next leg of the trip to Poland. We will have to return to Europe to hit all ...

Re: Case Study/Help - Roth Conversion/Realized LT Capital Gains Impact on Taxes

Unless you decide the Roth conversion at 12% beats Tax Gain Harvesting in the long run, which it often does. I guess it does depend. Our situation is a little unique, as we are very young, and plan on retiring early. There is an advantage to letting the traditional IRA grow before the conversions to Roth, as we can start a 5 year conversion ladder and access those funds without penalty. Where if you convert to Roth now and it grows, spending it down before FRA will result in less principle and more gains, which aren't treated as favorably. The other thing to consider, is whether it's worth waiting to move to a state that's tax free before large conversions. I still have to look up the laws for NY, or maybe someone is familiar and can chime...

Thank you for the help everyone!

That Kitces article is pure GOLD!

One thing that I do have to think about, is how much to keep in traditional IRA's for the future ability of "creating" income in order to avoid getting put into Medicaid over ACA plans, etc.

Will wait till end of the year to make any of these big conversions but it's good to know that I can harvest the LT Cap gains and then figure out the Roth stuff at a later date.

My career has been in IT/Business Process Automation software sales over the last 5 years. AerialWombat and HomerJ are BOTH correct in this instance, which is why I wouldn't worry too much, unless you're truly doing swivel-chair work. Areas of accounting that really need to worry are AP/AR and Treasury. We built bots for clients which continuously sniffed an email inbox for PO's or Invoices, opened these emails, downloaded the attachment, extracted the data (huge limitations right now with OCR for scanned stuff), and processed the remaining workflow. You still need people though, as there are exceptions and many instances where a bot cannot run the process end to end. The setup and maintenance effort of these bots is also creating a huge de...

After doing a ton of research, I'm still confused on the details of my situation for 2020. Hoping those smarter than myself can chime in with some input. Current Situation for 2020 Age - early 30's Tax Filing Status - MFJ Location - NY, USA Estimated Wage Income - $7,500 Total Traditional IRA Value - $175,000 Total Unrealized LT Capital Gains in Taxable Brokerage Account - $30,500 Goal/Questions Due to a unique situation (unpaid sabbatical), our W-2 income will be very low. We would like to take advantage of this low income year to limit our tax liability in the future, but I'm confused by the details of how Roth IRA Conversion + Harvesting LT Capital Gains will impact our tax situation. We actually booked our flights for mid March, and starting the adventure in Portugal. Since we shared plans with a number of family and friends who live in Europe, we've gotten some offers to stay and explore areas that were not on the original itinerary. I'm way younger and likely a lot poorer than you, and I just did exactly that. 10 years into my career I decided to take a year off to travel before figuring out what the next chapter of my professional life will look like. I would imagine that with a high net worth, you don't really need to replace your current income when/if you decide you want to go back to full time work.

Life is short, just look at Mark Hurd. He made $108 million last year, there is no magic pill for the fountain of youth.

I'd suggest calling in to add the auto transfer feature in early November and have it begin in early December. Allow sufficient time for your $10K to become available and moved into your share account at PSECU before the auto transfer kicks in.
Thank you!, I actually went so far as to break a crappy 5 year 2.2% CD I had with another institution this morning, even with the 6 month interest penalty I will come out $500 ahead by moving the money into the PSECU account. I successfully got my $25k into the CD this morning, instantly.

I have $10k in funds becoming available in late November. Trying to figure out how to get that in with the automated fund addition option.

Can you set it up as a once a month thing? I could probably free up $5k as a bridge before those funds become available, then pop the $10k in across two additional payments.

Hmm, maybe you can retire much sooner than you think?

Time to financial independence is relatively easy to calculate in today's dollars by figuring out your net savings rate.

Also, as someone who is semi-retiring at 32 in a few months.......28 was a great time to lay down the groundwork.

Has anyone else tried it, and if so, how did you navigate the social and professional settings.
I do this, at least 6 months a year.

Re: Low-earners- What is your profession?

This thread is hilarious. Couples earning $150-200k are "low earners" now?

I guess we qualify too ;)

Him - $130k/yr - Software Sales

Re: Capital One 360 no beneficiary option

I called them today and you can now submit a form via fax/mail to add beneficiaries to all savings/checking/CD accounts. You can add 4 accounts per form, and have it notarized before submitting to them. Takes 3 business days to turn around once they receive it.

Guess they have been listening to their customers =)

Re: What are you doing with cash?

As of late 2016 you can only use the default settlement account. New SEC rules I believe.

Re: Help Deploying Extra Cash To Bonds....

lack_ey, thank you for your thought out responses. It has been a very helpful mental exercise.

What I'm realizing is, it comes down to a lot of what if's in the future for most investment vehicles and it may be prudent to spread risk (be that tax, interest rate, equity, geopolitical, inflation, etc).

For that reason, I snagged $10k in I Bonds this morning, I may end up with a small position of NYS Muni Fund in Taxable at some point if interest rates do go up and NAV drops significantly. I did the calculation of Tax Equivalent Yield in my tax bracket is ~3.7%.

All of this fixed income stuff is really peanuts compared to the bigger picture in my portfolio. I need to get my equity exposure up to my 60% goal asap.

Thank again!
