Re: RMDs for ex-wife in inherited account.

OP: I assume the late ex-husband's IRA and 401k were divided by QDRO in the divorce, correct? If so, the share that went to your daughter is her's. The share that stayed with the ex-husband for which daughter is the beneficiary is subject to the SECURE Act rules and the key is whether she is an "Eligible Designated Beneficiary" under the SECURE Act: There are five categories of individuals included in the EDB classification: https://www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/plan-participant-employee/retirement-topics-beneficiary The owner’s surviving spouse The owner’s child who is less than 18 years of age A disabled individual A chronically ill individual Any other individual who is not more than 10 years younger than the deceased IRA owner...

Re: Best funds for my 403b

Which one is the Vanguard S&P 500 from the options above? And you list that one along with the Vanguard Extended Market one as though they are one selection. I'm not sure I get that. And I didn't understand the 82% and 18% - at first I thought that was the suggested allocation, but if I add the other 2 you recommended, it would be over 100%. Can you please clarify that? I like your suggestion and think I might go with it, but just want to confirm I understand. And if it would just be 3 things I'm selecting - would I allocate equal amounts of my portfolio to each of those three? Vanguard Institutional Index Instl Pl (VIIIX) ER 0.02% is the S&P 500 index fund. A S&P 500 index fund covers over 80% of the U.S. stock market investin...

Re: RMDs for ex-wife in inherited account.

This will be an inherited IRA and subject to the new(ish) 10 year rule. The one exception might if the divorce provided for a QDRO but that was not completed before his passing. Even then, it would probably only cover part of the balance. Non Spouse, yes. Subject to Secure 2.0, yes. But because of the relative ages, she may elect instead to take out an RMD each year based on her life expectancy as an eligible designated beneficiary. She should take the first RMD by December 31 of the year following the year of death. Alternatively, she can choose to follow the 10 year rule. Non-spouse beneficiary options In 2020 and later, options for a beneficiary who is not the spouse of the deceased account owner depend on whether they are an "elig...

Re: Best funds for my 403b

I recently fired my financial advisor and now that I'm going solo, I realized I may possibly not have the best funds in my 403b (these are funds my advisor picked), so I wanted to get some feedback. I currently have: FLCNX - 98.37% VMFXX - 1.63% I didn't think much of it until I saw a couple posts on here where people were saying the FLCNX has a high expense ratio. If that's an issue for me, what would be suggested as an alternative for that as well as for the VMFXX if that also is problematic? Also, if I change either of these to something else, I guess the process is to sell my current funds and buy new ones? If so, is there a risk to this and losing money in this process? Sorry for my ignorance here. I'm slowly getting a handle on all t...

RMDs for ex-wife in inherited account.

My daughter who is just one year younger than her ex-husband and recently divorced will inherit his IRA and 401k account because of the beneficiary designations.

Is there reason not to rollover his IRA and 401k account into her IRA, rather than maintaining a separate inherited IRA?

Edit, the ex has died, the divorce is final, he had not begun RMDs because not yet required.

Edit, No QRDO was entered with the recent divorce decree. They had a legal separation 4 years ago, and she then received 1/2 of his IRA. She is still the designated beneficiary of his 1/2 of the IRA and of his 401k account.

Re: One Size Fits All

New Vanguard 3 fund participant. I am almost 79, wife is 76. Our SS, pension, IRA and VA disability income provides for pretty much all of our needs. The taxable invested portion is a 35/60/5 allocation (equity, bond, cash). Currently in VTSAX, VTIAX and VBTLX. Our current withdrawals from this account will be fully discretionary - travel, major purchase, home improvement. I fully understand the stock portions of the portfolio. My question has to do with the VBTLX portion. Is it as wise a place to be for our situation, or would a shorter duration bond fund or money market or individual treasuries be better. The volatility in today’s world is unsettling to me. Just stay the course (even though our course is of relatively short duration)? Th...

Re: Portfolio Review

The expense ratios of the three index funds suggested are lower than you can get in an IRA: 1) S&P 500 Index Fund (80% of the U.S. stock market) (0.02%); 2) Northern Trust International Index Fund (MSCI ACWI ex-US IMI, total international stock index fund) (0.04%); and 3) Northern Trust Bond Market Index Fund (Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index, total bond market index fund) (0.02%). What is the thought regarding a 90/10 split between the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 funds within the 401(k) in order to replicate a Total Stock Market fund? I found that suggested split here: https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Approximating_total_stock_market . It seems that the Total Stock Market fund and S&P 500 have followed each other fairly closely...

I am a bit confused on the income limits on opening a 401k and IRA. Currently, we have the following: Myself - 401k through my employer which they match up to 7%. I am currently making approximately $105k and have a side business making approximately $10k more. I am contributing 10% on my 401k (about $10,500 a year) Wife - She is a teacher. She makes approximately $60k and besides her pension, has an IRA which she is contributing 5%. Can I open an IRA too? Thanks! I actually opened a ROTH IRA last week (have only contributed $100 to it so far). I wanted to open an IRA rather than contribute more to my 401k because: 1. Re: Mom Moving from UBS to Fidelity / New Portfolio Allocation

My mother (74) is moving her retirement accounts from UBS to Fidelity. The UBS accounts are with an advisor, but the Fidelity accounts will be self-managed. She really likes the UBS advisor, which she (and my father before his death) has been using for about 10 years. She is moving because of the costs (1.2% AUM and a large portion in a cash account earning 0.05% APY). She asked me to help her with the transfer and to "manage" the accounts for her. I am looking for a second opinion on how to help her with these accounts. Here is the relevant information: Income in 2023: 105k (approximately 1/2 RMD and 1/2 Social Security) Emergency funds: Yes, about 6 months in a bank account with local branches Debt: House mortgage: 240k @ 2.75%...

In terms of tax-deferred accounts, I rolled my old 401(k) and new Roth 401(k) together when I began at my new company. However, it appears that Fidelity is smart enough to know which funds are earmarked as "Roth" and "Pre-Tax" within the account. Hello, Bogleheads . . . and thank you for reading the following, which ends with a question for your input (based on your expertise): Last week, my husband’s financial adviser urged him to sell his stakes in VBILX and VBTLX—some in a taxable brokerage account and some in an IRA-- and park the proceeds in Vanguard’s settlement fund in each account until things settle down (at some point) and the proceeds can be reinvested elsewhere. My husband relayed that information to me immediately . . . and I’ve been mulling over that advice ever since. I know the the Total Stock market is a wider assortment of companies - but can there a case be made for the SP having more stable, reliable companies? What things do you consider when evaluating both these indexes? I prefer a total stock market index fund if available, for a little additional diversification. If not available then in my opinion a S&P 500 index fund is good enough for investing in U.S. stocks. A S&P 500index fund invests in stocks of selected large-cap and mid-cap U.S. companies, in the 30 years since the creation of the first total stock market index fund the two types of funds have had almost identical performance. I suggest not trying to time either the stock market or the bond market.

Re: 401k/403b Contributions

I want to max out my employer contributions to my solo 401k for 2022 but am unsure about the max contribution limits. I have a 403b (employer 1), 401k (employer 2) and solo 401k (1099 income). Does the 401(k) Employee & Employer Contributions limit of $61,000 apply to all of these cumulatively or does each get a $61,000 limit since they are "unrelated employers"? Can I contribute any more employer contributions to my solo 401k for 2022? 1099 Income: $182,932 Expenses: $8,009 Net 1099 income:$174,923 1. Employer 1 403b - Employee contributions: $15,720 - Employer contributions: $9,040 2. Employer 2 401k - Employee contributions: $5,124 3. Solo 401k - Employer contributions: $38,279.00 Thanks for your help! IRS, "How Much ...

Re: I did it, Goodbye Edward Jones

Thanks, I appreciate the continued support from you all as I get ready to set it and forget it with my accounts. I'm strongly leaning towards a target date fund but also like the 2-4 fund index option. My current inclination is to go with: 70% - FSKAX - Total US Stock Index 15% - FTIHX - Total Intl Stock Index 15% - FXNAX - Total US Bond Index Still pondering 5% or so of FSRNX REIT as well. Then set a reminder to check up around age 50 in 8 years. I have the bulk of my holdings, 3/4 or so, in traditional IRA and the rest in a Roth 401k that will be funded w/ 15-25% of my income moving forward. It has good vanguard low cost index fund options I can match the Fidelity allocations with. By age 60, my Roth to Traditional holdings should be abo...

No cash "in portfolio". The only cash is whatever happens to be in my checking account, it varies, currently about 0.25% of the portfolio.

Re: VBTLX vs VBILX bond fund comparisons

Total bond VBTLX includes mortgage-backed securities, of which roughly a third are GNMAs. Another difference is that VBILX holds intermediate bonds only, while VBTLX achieves an intermediate average duration but also holds short-term and long-term instruments. Older thread I am responding to, but I am responding with a question due to my spouse's plan switching all participants within the plan from VBTLX to VBILX next month. Is it okay to assume that they are similar enough funds that for her tax deferred plans (403b and 457b) bond coverage (she keeps 30% in VBTLX in one plan and 40% in the other) it will more or less be a wash? Shooting4Sixty wrote: Fri Mar 17, 2023 5:56 pm Are there any other metrics aside from expense ratio that I should use to better understand why none of the american funds are worth keeping?

Since they're all unique blends it seems hard to compare to any given index?
American stock funds tend to concentrate on so-called "growth stocks", ignoring "value stocks", so not fully diversified .

Other metrics could include degree of diversification, volatility, turnover rate, and risk-adjusted returns. For bond funds other metrics could include average credit quality, effective duration and volatility.

It's hard to beat an index fund for the combination of lower risk and higher net returns.

Re: Can I create my own "fund" on Vanguard or Schwab so I don't have to individually purchase 10 different etfs every mo

One total market index will get you the same results. Can you explain? My portfolio is very different than a total market index. I am tilting towards small cap and value, which over the long term have outperformed the total market significantly. . . . . . . . . . My split is: VALUE EMERGING: Aves: 20% S&P 600: IJR: 20% SMALL CAP VALUE: AVUV: 15% MID CAP: VO:20% INT SMALL CAP VALUE: AVDV:15% S&P 500: 10% The simpler solution is Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund (VTSAX) plus Vanguard Small-cap Value Index Fund (VSIAX). The ratio could be 3:1. Rick Ferri, etf.com (7/21/2014), To Tilt Or Not To Tilt? I am tilting towards small cap and value, which over the long term have outperformed the total market significantly. Have you compared your portfolio against a more typical three fund portfolio in portfolio visualized? Even if you were convinced the risk/returns were better with your AA, I’m sure you could recreate by consolidating mainly within VTI and adding a small cap value tilt with a single ETF along with some international exposure in another fund. Do you have a specific tool to suggest on how I can do this comparison? It seems most portfolio visualizer are just looking at past performance. There is no too...

Re: Can I create my own "fund" on Vanguard or Schwab so I don't have to individually purchase 10 different etfs every mo

Imagine this question has been asked many times, but couldn't find much. Seems like a pretty simple feature for them to implement. Each month I contribute to my portfolio (7 different etfs, at 10-20% weightings). It is time consuming to do this each month. I wish I can just contribute to one thing and set the weightings and it does it for me (market order or set limit order at .02% below market or something). What is the solution to this basic issue? EDIT: 6 funds, not 10. But point is the same. Cheers If in tax-advantaged accounts switch to the regular mutual fund versions of the 6 exchange traded funds (ETFs). With regular mutual funds it's easy set up automatic investment of new contributions and also easy to set up automatic reinvestme...

vanguard 2030 account vthrx----- fidelity 2030 account fffex
Fidelity Freedom® 2030 (FFFEX) has a high expense ratio, 0.66%. I would never consider using that fund for that reason.

Which fund firm or brokerage is your Roth IRA with?

If at Vanguard I suggest using Vanguard Target Retirement 2030 Fund (VTHRX) ER 0.08%.

If at Fidelity I suggest using Fidelity Freedom® Index 2030 Fund Investor Class (FXIFX) ER 0.12%.
At Capitol Group american funds 2030 target date 0.66 fee but the problem i have is load fee 3.5 %
In your Roth IRA at Capital Group are you charged any fee for buying the Vanguard target date fund?

Re: New to personal responsiblilty... [Help with portfolio]

Welcome to the forum :happy . Please add the fund names and expense ratios. Please don't use ticker symbols alone. Hello. I am new to this forum and investing. I have $15K to invest in a ROTH, I will take this money out in 10-15yrs from now. From what I have learned from this forum, I have come to the following portfolio: FSPGX 20% VQNPX 20% VTSAX 20% VTRIX 10% VTIAX 10% VQNPX 10% FTBFX 10% This is based on the "Core Fore" and I've expanded a little bit. I don't need this money, I'm hoping it can generate some amount for my future down payment on a home in the future. So I welcome any input and thank you for taking the time to read and hopefully expand my knowledge further. Seven funds is more complex than I prefer. Why funds from...
