Re: Kitchen remodel
my 1924 home has the original cabinets, built like a tank. True, i don't have soft close drawers but i like that it's still period. I too have a Formica counter which is ugly, but functional... so i get your point. I updated our kitchen a few years ago by replacing the ugly yellow Formica countertops that had loose edge bands with new Formica countertops with solid edge bands. Don't laugh. Some of the new Formica is amazing. People come in and think we have granite. The new Formica has facets on the surface that catch the light much like a ground stone top would. The edge banding is manufactured in various profiles and attached to the edge of the top. It will not come off if installed properly. It is nothing like the old edge band attached...

Could i say boglehead, or just cheap (ish) ? I am in the process of building my own countertop, oak with walnut accents. It's a beast at over 12'. Just about ready for the final sanding, then it'll take a couple weeks to get it oiled ( going cutting board style ).
It's a challenge keeping the kitchen functional during all this, not to mention the build taking up all the garage space.
We plan on new appliances after it's installed. WoW, have prices skyrocketed !
Good luck with your project.

Herbs, although i wouldn't say are overlooked, but timing & type of their use is. Not all are great for building depth and not all are good for using as a finishing herb. dried & fresh each have their place.

I have often been asked this type of question. My default answer is that everyone tastes differently. First understand HOW & WHAT we actually taste then do your best to discern what YOU can actually taste.
I'd start by reading about the mother sauces. Find a good butcher and buy some bones.

Go to a local track. Just about every major manufacturer has a car club, google events and go chat with people. If that doesn't get your blood going then stick to what you have and enjoy. Street driving can be fun in the right places, but being on a track opens up a whole new world and lets you explore what a vehicle can do.
Track driving will also help with your bank account issues. As expensive as a vehicle is, there is always more HP to gain, better suspension ... and there is nothing like a fresh set of sticky tires.

Re: Anyone moved from Portland Oregon to Vancouver Washington?
i've been reading the background info on Urban Alchemy & their possible roll in pdx. If it works out & the mayor is serious about making outdoor camping illegal it will be a massive step forward for Portland. Campers not within a city specified camp will be arrested or given the opportunity for treatment. Lawsuits will follow if there is not adequate space for those seeking help so it may take some time to get everything up & running. a lot will depend on the governor providing funds. There is now a large budget for camp cleanup & services so that should transfer to the new program. I do think there is a segment of campers that will just move outside the city boundaries... good for us, not good for the neighboring cities. Th...

Her paycheck is directed to paying the kids rent, i believe this helps as she sees exactly why she's working. I don't get all the talk about CPI Adjusted Annuity. If you are looking at ( for ) a stable monthly income level why not raise SS payments ?
imo the issue is not 'bogleheads', but people who don't save. SS has a number of advantages over annuities, tIRA, 401k etc... it's forced savings ( as long as you work ) and you can't pull the money out early or borrow against it.

Re: Question for computer experts regarding Windows 11
The best Windows were 3.1, 95, and XP. You'll get a lot of security updates with the new one, but you'll also get a lot of stuff no one asked for or wanted, and Windows will continue to bloat up and inefficiently use the hardware. Not to mention the tracking, and the trying to get you to make a centralized account with them to use your own computer. I will upgrade when I no longer have a choice - it's not like most people really choose to use Windows anyway. They captured the market, so that they're the thing you need to run the programs that already exist. win 3.1 for workgroups 95 ? it was a big leap forward but P&P and signed drivers still a ways off - granted a lot of blame goes to 3rd party venders, but the battle for interrupts w...

Re: Leaving SS on the Table: Altig, Kotlikoff, and Ye
The mistake is to assume that you want to maximize lifetime spending when what you should want to maximize is lifetime utility or satisfaction. Having the money to take a lifetime vacation at 65 might have a lot more value than an extra $10,000 when you are 90 and too infirm to enjoy a vacation. People talk a lot about delayed gratification as a virtue but when you are in your 60's "delayed" might mean "never." For some people winning the game by collecting the most amount of money over their lifetime is their primary satisfaction and that seems rather sad. This is going to be a part of my calculation of when to file. My early retirement years will be expensive ( travel ), but will greatly taper as I'm less able to full...

Good luck. When I was living in Arizona, I went in to get a haircut from my barber and his one hand had a huge wrap on it (kind of like something you'd see on a cartoon). Apparently weeks ago he got bit by a brown recluse while doing gardening (I've always been told by natives to wear gloves while working in the yard due to all of the nasty critters) and he nearly lost the hand. They had to lance it multiple times and he said it was the most painful thing he had ever experienced (he was about 50). A pest control guy told me once that spiders are tough to get rid of since their bodies are further off the ground and away from the poisons that are used. Not sure if that is true. Agree. I was bit on the leg, it was awful ! It took FOREVER to h...

With a PVR you are on a 'closed' system and most likely have an expansion tank. The pressure difference may stress or tear the diaphragm in the tank, worth checking while the PRV is being replaced ( it should be adjusted anyway to the new PVR psi setting ) .

My current PIA is $2993 so the bar graph appears to be correct: https://i.ibb.co/mJV5GLr/Personal-Benefit.jpg My statement also provides a good "Retirement Ready" fact sheet for those age 61-70 which discusses a number of often overlooked (by the general public, not so much by Bogleheads) items. P.S. As far as shielding your assets, there are many illegal ways, and maybe he was going to suggest some of those, but here are the legal ways (for everyone, I know some do not apply to you): 1. Pay off debt. If you have a $20k car loan and $20k in the bank, well, they take a portion of the money in the bank, but if both a $0, you pay less. 2. Pay extra towards your house, same idea as #1. 3. Max retirement accounts. I know most BHs do this anyway, but do it early, before filling out FAFSA. 4. Prepay anything and everything else that you can. I know it's nickels and dimes, but prepay items like insurance to reduce cash reserves. Basically, the idea is to have a little as possible in non-retirement accounts including CDs, savings, checking...

IMO, Having two kids in college... of average SAT The whole thing is a joke. If you have seniors, your too late ( kinda ) as your tax records for FAFSA is prior, prior. There is no 'hiding' assets, but there is 'spending assets' which won't matter as a big portion of EFC is salary. If you are like myself with an average student there is little to do other than pay or take loans. We do have savings and 529 plans and only borrowed the subsidized amount ( why not, 0% apr ). We did save by using our states university partnership program, where lower level classes can be taken at CC... thus able to use our states CC funding program ( covers tuition only ). Zion really is a hiking park. there are a couple of flat(ish) trails, but a bit boring.
Bryce has a nice road with many scenic viewpoints. Hiking down gives you a really neat perspective, navajo loop would be my first choice.

Depending on your direction, look into Kolob & Cedar Breaks.

Re: Sanity Check: Car for Teenage Driver
Might depend on where you live and what your kids enjoy doing. In the PNW you should be outdoors ! but it does require a vehicle.
We enjoyed the freedom of not having to run the kids around... Son surfs ( hour to the west ), snowboards ( hour to the east )... daughter loves kayaking and hiking.
Daughter : hand me down 2005 Honda CR-V ( near 200k miles )
Son : 2003 Honda Element ( also near 200k miles )
We also have a Rav4 Limited, a very nice car.
We have been blessed with two good drivers, probably 7 years driving between them without a wreck or ticket.

Re: Longer cycling prep
I do not group ride. Riding another persons pace i find is inefficient to becoming a better rider.
When started i wasn't strong enough to stay with a group so i rode solo the first year. As i progressed, i found or developed my cadence and really don't like to deviate from that, a faster pace is destructive and a slower pace just seems to zap my energy. I enjoy just zoning out and spinning and not having to worry about another rider. I do ride with my wife often, but that is just leisure ( for me ).
No bike envy:
2009 Specialized Allez triple - Converted to 105 compact double (50-28)
Fulcrum racing wheels - ceramic bearings.

they cut your salary and you still feel you are paid ~ 20% over market value.
The issue is what ?
How about just feeling grateful.

True, but the barrier islands make MS a lot different than the panhandle. I guess that's why it's affordable ?willthrill81 wrote: ↑Mon May 02, 2022 10:08 amA lot of people in recent years and 'discovered' that the MS, AL, and FL panhandle sections of the Gulf Coast can be really nice and are remarkably affordable.trinc wrote: ↑Mon May 02, 2022 9:58 ami was there 4 yrs in the early 80's, USAF. an interesting place, and a goto place i state to my wife when talking about moving for retirement... joking of course.

one of the evenings spent by ourselves.
