Re: Ideal next job knocked too soon

DOJ. Sounds like maybe the FBI? I know they recently started filling new classes.

If so, you likely have a couple of months to go through the interview process and potentially be offered a position. Then, you would be scheduled for entry into NAC, which would be a few months to a year out (at least in the old days).

Go to the interview. You have nothing to worry about until you get an offer, and even then you are likely to be over a year in your current position.

Tax question: 1099Misc and travel expenses

DH is an independent contractor who provides service for multiple entities. Some reimburse him for travel (mileage/tolls/parking), others do not. The 1099's he received for 2014 fall into three categories: A) company did not reimburse for travel B) company reimbursed DH for travel, in the exact amount. The reimbursement is not included on the 1099Misc C) company reimbursed for the exact amount of travel expenses, this amount is included in Box 7 of the 1099Misc I've read what I think are the relevant rules but I want to check to make sure I understand when/what expenses can be deducted on the Schedule C. In case A, travel expenses should be deducted. In case B, travel expenses should not be deducted. In case C, travel expenses should be ded...

Re: Preparing for RMDs

What I haven't seen mentioned here is the withdrawal restrictions for the TSP. The way I understand it, you are allowed one "free" withdrawal from the TSP. Not free in a tax sense, but one withdrawal without starting routine periodic withdrawals. So if the OP makes a withdrawal one year to do a Roth conversion, the next time a withdrawal is made it either has to be of the entire balance, or it is the first of a regular periodic withdrawal. That would make it hard to withdraw only enough to top off the tax bracket, assuming that changes every year.

Do I have that correct? Or is that the rule for withdrawals that will not be used for Roth conversions?

Re: Telephone SCAM

Yes, it is a scam. From what I've read, the caller will direct you to do this and that on your computer -- and you end up installing "ransomware" that makes it impossible for you to do anything on the computer until you fork over $$ to have it disabled.

I got a call like this a couple of weeks ago. I responded with a profanity-laced tirade to the effect of "do you think I'm an idiot? don't you ever *** call here *** again". There were probably a lot more **** in there.

Afterwards I sort of wished that I had strung them along a bit to waste their time before tearing into them. But that would have been a waste of my time also.

But no one at work knows yet -- I'm waiting until January to request the paperwork from HR.

Re: Very few kids in our neighborhood-Thoughts?

When we moved into our newly-built subdivision 20+ years ago, there were kids galore. As preschoolers / young elementary students, my daughters spent their “playtime” in one of the yards with a lot of neighbors. However as they got older (somewhere around 5th grade) there was hardly any time spent with the neighbors, as the kids stared becoming involved in different activities. Some played soccer, some danced, some were in after-school care, etc. There was less time for “hanging out”, and there were new friends from school, teammates, etc. While my girls remain cordial acquaintances with the neighbors, there is only one that is considered a friend (and she isn’t a neighbor that my girls played with when they were young – they met as teammat...

Re: "I've had it" at work - how often

A long commute is a major contributor to stress. People who buy houses far away from their workplace have all kinds of justification for this decision (e.g., price, size, schools, spouse's employment), but the end result is that their well-being suffers and it affects the well-being of those around them. I agree. But in my case, my employer moved the labs. I went from an easy 8 mile, 10-15 minute commute each way to a 24 mile, hour long drive. I didn't choose to have a long commute, it was forced upon me. So I have three choices: 1) sell the house and move closer (not happening; we like where we live and the house is paid for) 2) make the long commute, or 3) Choose not to work here any longer. If I were younger I would move closer or find ...

Re: "I've had it" at work - how often

Almost daily now.

But I can see light at the end of the tunnel. I turn 50 in February 2015 and will be eligible for early retirement from my drudgery at MegaCorp. At that time I will ask to drop my schedule to 20 hrs/week, working from home (the commute is a major factor in my unhappiness). If management says no, I will join the ranks of the happy retired people.
