Thank you for your responses. We were really hopeful we could use our appreciable stocks. We are aware we could directly pay the institution.
Does anyone know how taxes for dependents works? Does a dependents taxes count as the Mothers income?

State of VA, taxes & government assistance.
Background:we have a close friend who is a Single Mother with 3 children on government assistance. Oldest child will turn 18 & would like to go on to further their education. We have been discussing the idea of gifting appreciable stocks to the child to help with the education.
Question: What are the ramifications for the Mother & her government assistance? We don’t know the details of the assistance & don’t want to jeopardized her situation. Does a gift to a child who is claimed as a dependent count against the mothers earnings & taxes.
Thank you for any input.

It is not uncommon to find homes with Saunas (sow-na, not saw-na) where I grew up. At least 30% of the homes have them.
140 would never cut it for me. I’ve been in infrareds & felt like they were a gimmick.

Re: Sept / Oct Trip to UP / Northern Michigan
If I had 2 weeks, I’d just drive the whole UP along the Lake shores. (Pro tip - there’s a reason they call it Superior). Biking of all kinds is huge in Marquette as well. While there you could jump off black rocks (some of the oldest rocks in the world geologically speaking) into Lake Superior…if you dare. I follow a Facebook page based in the UP. Sometimes arguments break out. Post, after post, after post on the same thread. Then someone post a picture of a Pasty (Pass-tee). Then (in the same thread) they start arguing over ketchup v. Gravy on Pasty’s! I kid you not! I know ketchup is the only way to go. There is some good Mom & Pop food in the UP. Fish is big. Marquette has variety as does the Keweenaw Peninsula (Copper Harbor, Hought...

Target a place to attack daily. Plan to clean out something small like a drawer on busy days, & something large like a closet on days when you have lots of time.

Re: Just now starting career and retirement funding at 29. Is my plan decent?
Withdrawals from taxed deferred accounts is earned income. At retirement age many find the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from retirement accounts push them into a higher tax bracket. Additionally RMD’s can cause $ to be subtracted from their social security checks because Sliding scale Medicare payments come out of your social security $.
Money in a ROTH is not subject to RMD’s (taxes have already been paid by you) so in theory you can keep your tax bracket lower.
If you pay attention to the forum you will see many people struggling with this scenario.

No, you can’t pick a particular fund.
What are you trying to do? Make a withdrawal & pocket the $? You don’t have to roll it into a ROTH to make a withdrawal. You can just take $ from TSP.

I too keep an online list of quotes 😻 A satisfied life is better than a successful life. Because our success is measured my others, but our satisfaction is measured by our own mind, heart, & soul. Family is not the people you are related to by blood,” she wrote. “They are the people that support you, look out for you, & love you unconditionally.” Keith Richards: no one wants to get old, but no one wants to die young either. Keith Richards: People like Rock, I like the roll. “Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give, but cannot. All that unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat, and in that hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go.” - Jam...

I think you have “grown up” with VERY favorable interest rates. 7% was considered a good rate at one time. I’ve never been a fan of ARM. I just buy it and refinance if rates drop again.

One common tradition is for people to go around the Thanksgiving table saying what they are thankful for and good health is often mentioned. I am fortunate to be in good enough health to be able to give blood so I started doing that again. The next time I can is in mid-December so as a general celebration of both Thanksgiving thanks and Christmas giving I will be giving blood. Foodwise for as long I can remember we always had our dressing as dressing balls that are baked in flattened balls on a cookie sheet so that they are nice and crunchy on the outside. They look more or less like crab cakes. I am not 100% sure but this might be a southern thing since my mom had dressing that way when she was being raised and her mom made them that way ...
