Re: Favorite vacations that don’t involve travel

My parents and my sister (and nephew) come to visit quite a bit. I always try to do something different and or interesting when they come. Went to a comedy show a few times, museums, a play, my town has an olymic whitewater training center that is open to the public... stuff like that. I enjoy it.

Re: Incredibly sleazy Northwestern Mutual cold caller

Educational, nice annotations. Not being judgmental, but I notice that your cold caller successfully kept you engaged in a conversation that must have lasted ten minutes, during which you gave him a lot of information about your circumstances and financial philosophy. You engaged in a fencing match, with the unspoken rule that "if you do not succeed in parrying every one of my thrusts then you must buy my product," and fortunately you succeeded in parrying every thrust. Yeah. I've done that too. But I worry that as time goes on and my cognitive strength declines, someday there will be an irresistible sales force that is stronger than my immovable sales resistance. So I now try not to engage. It's pretty darned scary. I get roboca...

Re: Honda vs. Toyota: Which has more bang for the buck?

If you’re buying a new car I would give serious consideration to either Kia or Hyundai. Both used to be garbage but are great vehicles now. As someone that used to be a huge Honda fanboy (and I’ve owned a couple Accords) I couldn’t be happier with my Optima. I understand why people talk about how Honda and Toyota are the only two brands worth owning but I think that idea is outdated. Hyundai & Kia get no love on this board. Agree. I have had many Honda’s (still have 2). I like my Hyundai more than any of the Hondas. It is more comfortable and drives nicer than Honda. Also the materials, fit/finish and attention to details exceed that on my Hondas (not my wife’s Acura). Hyundai and Kia are making very nice and reliable ( higher rated re...

I'm lucky that I am a platinum member (or whatever it's called) so I get free accounts. If they charged me $12/month I would immediately move my checking/savings to a credit union, cancel my credit cards, and move my IRAs to Vanguard.

Another related question - I am in the dark ages music technology-wise since my car is old - it just has a CD player and I still use CDs. Looks like a CD player is not an option in the new cars. Do I need to load all my music onto a flash drive and connect it? No idea what the Toyota sound systems are like.

Thanks again!
You rip all your CD's, put them on your phone, then use Bluetooth to connect your phone to your car.
Agreed. The idea of a CD player being a priority seems like an antiquated idea. I haven’t used one in years.

I'm hopeful that this portends good things re: my ability to weather a much larger decline, but obviously won't know for sure until it actually happens. In my experience it is not a single day or week or even a month that challenges your will. It is the steady drumbeat of bad news and declining markets. For me that was not 2000, but 2008-9. It was brutal rebalancing and seeing the market continue to go down. After a while you ask yourself why am I throwing good money after bad? My neighbor, who has a PhD in Economics from Harvard, was on TV. When asked if another depression could happen he said yes it could. That put the fear of God in me. I need to credit this site with helping me get through this period. This is exactly what I was trying...

No.

SWR is what you need in expenses. The more expensive the property you have the more it’ll cost you in taxes, maintenance, and upkeep... adding to your expenses.

Person A lives in a $100k condo that’s paid off with $900k in retirement accounts.

About three and a half years ago I bought a house and moved to a different area within the same city and it made me miserable. Luckily I kept my condo and when my tenant moved out I sold the house and moved back. Moving to a whole new city would absolutely amplify the misery bc you don't have any people there. If you don't mind me asking where do you live now? Would moving to a cooler area help out? When I moved to the suburbs I lived in a fairly bad area and all my neighbors were miserable. There was almost no walkability there and nothing cool to go to in the area anyways. The condo I moved back to is in the downtown area of my city and there's always something going on. Tons of people around me and they all want to be there. Maybe a move...

Re: Am I saving too much for retirment?

The chart is bad because it assumes your spending is directly correlated to your salary. I suppose if I made $40k a year I’d spend less than if I made $100k a year, but if I made $700k a year I probably wouldn’t spend more than if I made $500k a year. Most people have no clue how much they spend so framing things in terms of their salary makes discussing savings goals easier. Higher earnings/spending requires more aggressive savings because social security will represent a smaller portion of your pre retirement income. Agreed. I always thought it was odd to correlate what you need for savings to your salary. It should be tied to your expenses but I guess that's kind of hard for most people to know. A person making $80k with a 50% savings r...

Can I extend a lease?

Probably an odd question and I’ve got some time before I have to worry about it.

I’m in a lease right now and I really like the car. It’s a very reasonable payment ($139/month).

It’s my first lease and people keep telling me the dealership will probably start calling me to get me into something new... but I’d prefer to go the other way if it’ll keep my monthly payment down.

Has anyone been in this situation before? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

In 2017, we paid 26% total tax (federal tax, SALT, SS & Medicare tax), spend 24.94% and save the rest. Although the 26% total tax is not final until we file the tax return and might get some tax refund back.

So if my math is right, it's 50% saving rate, with $2 saved for every dollar spent.
I look at taxes as “money spent”, but I do see your logic now.

they still rely on their own agents to make money and it is not very scalable. zillow has a better model.
They don’t have their own agents in my area.
that's exactly the problem. they have to hire people in each market to make money. zillow can make money everywhere.
No, they used existing agents. When I sold my house my agent worked for RE/MAX.

Seems like a nice guy. Interesting and charismatic. Pretty clear vision. Someone who you would follow and root for.

I wish that were a key to stock price success. I've worked for several CEOs like him. None of those companies are around any longer. And unfortunately, none of my stock options had much value. Fun companies (for a while) though.
Do you have a link to that podcast?
