Re: Anyone concerned about their bond holdings?
thanks LadyG - well i have 30% of my portfolio in bonds now as protection in the event of a market crash, so i guess i dont want to see my protection potentially collapse. But as I said most of my bond fund allocations are in SHY, AGG and a total bond mutual fund. i only have a small amount in TLT and thats because it seems to be a good hedge against the S&P..if you look at the history TLT goes up when the S&P goes down and vice versa, but since TLT is long term treasury bonds they are more susceptible to the interest rate increase if there is one. Some people feel the increase is already built in to the bonds, but im not sure how accurate that is

Re: Need a good place to store my cash
1- i dont need a lecture. either provide an answer or dont say anything at all..its really quite simple..and im not trying to be mean just literal 2. I only have a small percentage in cash, not my entire portfolio 3. Thanks for the feedback Do you expect different answers than the ones you got to your similar question last October? https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=149149 ^^THIS. Why? You keep repeating the same questions. If you want different types of answers, you should try a different forum, probably one that emphasizes market timing. Given that the market tends to go up over time (but no guarantee, etc.), if you wait until a major pullback, the market may have gone up far more than the amount of the pullback at t...

Need a good place to store my cash
I have a percentage of my portfolio in cash right now because i want to have access to it when there is another market crash. Yes im timing the market but i dont care..there will be a large dip again and i want to have some cash available to invest when it does (whether its this year or in 5 yrs). Can anyone recommend good funds or ETFs to keep this extra money? right now its just sitting there not gaining anything. I could transfer it to my money market and make 1% but want to see if i can do a little better. thanks

New 401K - question
My company is finally starting my 401K. They will match 50% up to 4% of my salary. In the past I always picked target date retirement funds for my 401K but am wondering if its better to select my own allocations. My company is using Safe Harbor i believe and all the target date funds are T.Rowe. I looked at all the funds i can chose for the individual allocations and they all have really high expense ratios (in the 0.8-1.30% range); the target date funds are about 0.76%. Any suggestions? im about 30 yrs from retirement and i am pretty aggressive in my IRAs and individual investment accounts (about 90% stocks). Thanks so much

Best Investments for a ROTH IRA
Good morning- Was curious to see what other people in the forum have in their ROTH? I had the total market S&P mutual fund from fidelity then switched to the Blue Chip growth fund but it has a 0.8% expense ratio so i am considering moving over to ETFs...maybe the Vanguard total stock market and a DVY (dividend ETF). thanks

Re: Advice please [Received large commission check]
perhaps but isnt it a good strategy to invest at large dips...the reward can be greater then investing the whole lump sum right now - i know you cant time how big the dip will be but getting in lower is always better in my opinion. Everything I invested at the correction last month is now shooting up.
and if not on the dips then what about a lump some every month just to span the volatility of the market ?

Advice please [Received large commission check]
I just got a large commission check (i work in sales) - I would like to invest it obviously so i was thinking I should hold it in cash and just contribute to my ETFs and mutual funds over the course of the next year whenever the market has big drops. In the meantime i would ideally like to make some $ on it instead of it just sitting in my bank account which only gives 0.9%, would it be best to store it there or put it into a bond ETF/mutual fund? looks like bonds have been tanking the past couple months so i would ideally like to have it somewhere stable so i dont lose too much of my principle and maybe even make a little more. thanks for your suggestions. Also right now I own the AGG aggregate bond ETF and the fidelity total bond fund in ...

Bond exposure in my portfolio
Right now i have 20% of my retirement portfolio in a total bond fund from fidelity. In my individual investment account i have a long term treasury bond (FLBAX) and some exposure to TIP's and corporate bonds via ETFs. Are these good bonds to hold on to with the rising interest rates and current market volatility? im reluctant to sell and have everything in stocks now but I do want to have a small safety net in the form of bonds for any upcoming rough patches. thanks

I have been renting and am in no rush to buy, but may want to buy something in the next few years. im also in the process of considering a move back to NY. in the long run it may be more sensible to own something there then to waste money on rent but i still want my money to grow. i guess theres still a lot of uncertainty
ALso the money i have would be going into my individual investment account so its essentially liquid since i can sell funds or portions of funds at any time. only thing is there may be some tax consequences on whatever gains I make
