Re: Do you use a second refrigerator/freezer?

We have a 2nd fridge/freezer in the basement. A 1998 Kenmore, basic top freezer. Still running strong (knock wood). Not concerned about the energy costs; when it dies we'll get another one. We find it helpful to have to for overflow, especially the freezer.

Retired from megacorp at 55 and am now my own boss with a small consulting company in the same field in which I previously worked. Earning decent money, and never have to leave my home office or get on a plane for business again. And if I need a day off to do something fun, run errands, or whatever, I have that flexibility. I love it. I could just fully retire, but DW is still working and I'm not sure what I'd do with myself. Plus I like staying sharp mentally

I don't think they're necessary but I like to keep my car looking good. I wash it 1-2 times per month by hand in the summer (live in the Northeast) and maybe once per month in the winter through the automatic car wash. Wax it a couple of times a year. It is a 2019 Accord and looks like the day I bought it, outside and inside. Probably overly OCD, but to each their own. :beer

Re: Dual monitors - HDMI splitter?

Another option, if your video card + mb only has one HDMI port across them, is a USB HDMI adapter. This, however, will extremely limit the graphics performance of that monitor, even for basic 2D office applications. With an Nvidia 8GB graphics card and a desktop form factor there is guaranteed to be support for a large number of monitors. OP - how many ports do you have coming from your graphics card? I'd bet it's three. Do you know how to identify what ports you have? I think the problem is solved. I have 4 ports on the video card. One is currently being used by one of the existing 32' monitors. Plenty of room for the other monitor. Thanks all. It didn't occur to me there would be multiple ports on the video card, so I'm glad I asked.

Should I just get a simple one in, two out HDMI splitter, or do I need to get something called and HDMI matrix? I am running Windows 11.

Thanks.
You definitely don't want a splitter, that's just going to show the same thing on both monitors.

The previous poster has it right, just plug them both into your video card. Windows will do the rest.

You can give yourself more time to spend $6,000 by booking a fully refundable flight or hotel a year from now for $6K+, which will earn you the bonus right away, and then you can spend organically. Once your organic spending reaches $6,000, you can go ahead and cancel the reservation for a full refund. Chase Ink Business card comes with 0% APR for 12 months, so you can just pay the minimum for the first year. High credut utilization won't hurt your credit because business cards do not go on your credit report. I did not know you could do this! Eventually we will go into a recession. The Fed will likely then goose the economy back to life by lowering rates. Stocks will benefit, and the value of bonds will go up. And the headlines will talk about how well the market is doing (when the time comes). We've seen this movie before. The WSJ article is mildly interesting, but basically just noise.

I also just finished the Musk bio by Walter Issacson. It was an interesting approach, he more lightly covered his early life and the Zip2/Paypal sagas, as well as the the Tesla/SpaceX stories (and to be fair they have been extensively covered elsewhere). He spends quite a bit of time on recent events/Twitter/X. I am not a Musk fan overall, but you have to respect his drive and engineering/technical skills that produced results at SpaceX and Tesla that many thought couldn't be done. He's certainly hard on his people, and apparently there is a skillset certain Elon whisperers posses in being able to work with him over time. The Twitter/X saga so far highlights that when he ventures into areas that are not so tech/engineering focused as build...

Philo has no sports and no news. Not sure why you need a traditional television solution at all if you're seriously considering them. Just optimize streaming services.

Hello all, We have had YT TV for several years and have enjoyed it. The price is now up to 72.99 a month. We have multiple streaming services and I’m trying to trim down the cost. We have: 1. Prime video as part of Amazon Prime membership (~ $140/year) 2. Paramount plus included as part of our Walmart plus service, which we use a lot (~ $140/year) 3. HBO Max (pay it yearly - I think it’s about $180/year) 4. Hulu, which our daughter shares with us as part of her Spotify student account, so no cost to us (she pays for it) 5. Disney, (pay it yearly - $140/year). The kids are huge Disney and Marvel fans 6. Netflix (not the top plan, but the next one down) $16.25/month 7. The very concept of investing in a currency (crypto or otherwise) never seemed logical to me. Should I open a foreign bank account and "invest" in foreign currency? Perhaps if there was some reason to think crypto was safer but that never was presented to me as a selling point. It was always presented as a speculation (make a fortune), not an investment (although the term investment was often used).

I am an investor, not a speculator. I want to invest in a growing economy.

Rule of 55 question

Hi all,

I took a planned severance at the end of last year, right after I turned 55. I confirmed with Fidelity that if I want to, I can take money fromy my 401k before 59 1/2 without paying the 10% penalty, because of the Rule of 55. I'm not planning to do so (I will use money from our taxable account until 59 1/2), but just in case I do, I was wondering how the IRS knows that I am implementing the rule of 55 if I take money out before 59 1/2 ?

For example, if I take money out at 58, how does the IRS know that I was severed from my company right after I turned 55, so that I don't end up having to pay the 10% penalty?

Thanks.

Paying subcontractors in a small business

Hello everyone, My wife will receive income in her new single member LLC from a client, and then has to pay two other contractors out of that income. For simplicity's sake, say she receives $5,000 from a client and has to pay out $500 to subcontractor A and $500 to subcontractor B. Also for simplicity's sake, let's assume that is the only income she receives in 2023. My wife would receive a 1099 from the cliet for $5,000 at end of year. I know she also would have to send each subcontractor a 1099 at the end of 2023 for $500. How does it work as far as taxation? i.e. should she only be taxed on the $4,000, and if so, how is that handled from a tax perspective? Or does the IRS not care that the subcontractors are getting $1,000 of the $5,000?...

LLC and Solo 401k - is my accountant wrong?

Hello all,

I started a single member LLC doing consulting in the consumer packaged goods space on Jan 1 of this year. No employees.

I am in severance/semi-retirement from my former employer and am not allowed to contribute to their 401k anymore. My understanding is that, being over 50, I can contribute $30,000 into the 401k as an "employee", and 25% of net profit as the "employer". Up to a total of $73,500 for 2023.

My accountant seems to think I can only do the $30,000 as the employee, and didn't give an explanation why. She said she "looked it up". Well, so did I, and I think she is wrong. But I'm not sure. Anyone else in a similar situation? I am in NYS if that matters.

Thanks.

I recently received a great severance package when I turned 55 at end of 2022. I was hoping for it, so it all worked out well. I am now doing quite a bit of consulting in the same industry and I love it. I never have to leave the house for this work, I get to stay sharp mentally, and I am able to save a lot of extra money while I am being paid by Megacorp for the year.
