Re: Any aerospace engineers? Pros v. cons of working for NASA v. private sector

One more question...what are your thoughts on staying in school to obtain a PhD? From a financial perspective, he will probably never make up the lost 4 years or so of income if he gets a PhD. If your son likes R&D, the PhD will open up opportunities, especially when he's young. Even now, at age 54...

Re: Any aerospace engineers? Pros v. cons of working for NASA v. private sector

Most NASA employees are in the business of contract management. The real engineering gets outsourced to contractors. If he wants to do research and development, he should go work for a contractor. If he wants to become an expert in federal acquisition regulations, he should go work at NASA. ^ This....

Re: When to claim Social Security: two reasons not to wait

I turn 55 next month, switched to part time work this month, and plan to take SS at age 62, for my own two reasons: 1. When I use cfiresim or firecalc, I get the same income (within 2%) whether I use age 62, 67, or 70 to start SS. This is for covering my wife and me until we're 110/105, so just abou...

Re: Dealership oil change worth it?

I don't have the time to do it myself so that is not an option. I can change the oil and filter in less than 30 minutes at home, and I know I replaced the crush washer, torqued the drain bolt correctly, and added the right amount of oil. There is no place I can go for an oil change and reliably be ...

Re: Relearning Calculus

For what you're wanting, Spivak or Apostol. My recollection from several years ago was that Caltech at the time required all freshman to take the year of Calculus at Caltech, regardless of AP test scores. They used Apostol. I had the chance to look through both books once, and bought Apostol. It see...

Re: Should I decline Grand Prize trip because of taxes on winnings?

“if you were going to spend $4000 on a trip, would this be it?”

If no, why not just spend the $4000 on the trip you would take?

Re: Any BH mountain bikers?

I switched this summer from clipless to Freeriders and the Race Face Chester pedals linked to above. I prefer them to clipless, which I'd used for 10 years. Downhills feel the same as clipless to me - the 5-10 rubber really sticks to the pedals when weighted. There are many sections I walked with cl...

Re: which engine and transmission options to choose for Taco

I've had Tacomas with both engines. The main problem with the 4cyl is the transmission. Often if driving 65-70 on a highway, the transmission would downshift from 4th to 3rd, then quickly to 2nd. I had to learn to lift up the gas slightly to avoid the sudden shift to 2nd. The gas mileage isn't much ...
