Re: Ooma Phone Service

Poor coverage might be one reason for some. If you're in a major metropolitan area that's probably not a consideration. It's a bit different elsewhere. Spotty coverage and likely better 911 service is my reason. Reverse 911 can be a life saver. While poor coverage used to be a concern in the past, most of the modern cell phones released in the past few years support WiFi calling, so at home while you are connected to a stable internet, you always have great connectivity regardless of whether the tower signals are good. These are also enabled by default in nearly all phones and carriers available today in the market - atleast in the US. Fax and E911 are still good reasons; although the 911 (phase 2 911) available via cell phones is far supe...

Re: Ooma Phone Service

We bought a Ooma "hub" device from Frys back in 2007 or 2008 and it still working just fine. This was from back in the day when Vonage used to charge upwards of $20 per month for VoIP phone service and SunRocket went belly up overnight. The $180 or so I paid for the hub was a no-brainer at the time - it would have paid for itself within a year. We have literally paid $0 to Ooma since then as Hub also included regulatory fees (Ooma started charging $3 or so per month starting with their "Telo" device few years later, but grandfathered in Hub users as long as they don't upgrade to a new device). That said, we hardly use our home phone now as cell phone plans have become generous with unlimited talk. If our hub were to stop...

If you have the free Turbotax from Fidelity, it's free. If you don't, you're in the wrong thread. My understanding is that the free TurboTax from Fidelity includes one state, but not the state filing fee. If you use TT Online, federal + state + federal e-file + state e-file are all included. If you use TT download federal + state + federal e-file are included, state e-file fees are extra. Also, if using online, multiple states are free. Both the software and filing, since they price it as a single item. As opposed to the download version where you pay separately for the state software (one included) and e-file (none included unless it's NY). I have already “purchased” the $5 desktop version. Can I use that for federal and then use the free...

As a public service announcement, I feel it is my duty to advise those who go ahead with this to keep account sizes under the insurance limit. I say this after speaking with someone who is familiar with Robinhood's compliance officer. That is all I can say in this thread. I will not be going ahead with this offer. That said, stuff happens, and I don't think I trust any brokerage enough to exceed their coverage limits. Especially one where having a seven figure account makes you part of a small list. So TLDR, stick to $500k or under in balances? If you have an individual brokerage and a traditional IRA, are those treated separately? My understanding of how SIPC insurance works is very different. I have been using this app on Android for YEARS now - passport renewals for me, spouse, LO and several country visa applications that were done using passport photos from this app. Never had any issues.

I had to pay $7 or so one-time several years ago to unlock all the premium features - something I recommend doing just for the background removal feature alone. Now passport photos cost me 40 cents to print at walgreens, so the app has paid itself in just one use.

Still quite happy with Fidelity FullView. They're missing Penfed.org and PayPal integration, but for me both these accounts hover at $0 anyway so it hasn't bothered me. If they had a good Android app with transaction widget I'd even uninstall Empower altogether from my phone.

For now I use empower to keep looking at my recent transactions locally and FullView as my default aggregator and net worth tracking. I don't use budgeting features on either (and didn't use on mint as well).

1099-INT in Child's name from TreasuryDirect

In 2023 we redeemed a I-Bond under my child's name (10 years old). The total interest was $1,240.00 and TreasuryDirect issued a 1099-INT with Box 3 equalling that amount.

When filing our tax returns, in TurboTax.com we only see options for filing 1099-INT in the name of me, my spouse or joint (me and spouse). The drop-down does not allow selecting the child's name. I also went through the Q&A for child income, however because the interest amount was less than $1250 it bypassed and suggested filing a separate return for child.

Can someone here with knowledge suggest what should be our course of action to take - should we file a separate return for the child?

Did BIL install it using a TT login different from the one that you purchased it on? Yes. I had not used the key but it was purchased from my account. I sent the key and asked BIL to download from InstallTurboTax.com site. They added the key when prompted and were able to download TT. After installing, they entered the key again in the software after logging in and were able to activate the software. I am sure it would be cleaner if you are able to purchase from the account that plans to use it, but in this case I did not want them to share their user/pass and give me the ability to look at how much income...

I get a privacy error when I go to installturbotax.com. But it looks like they'll let me pay $5 for the mac download as well. For now, I just downloaded the Windows one.

Yes, every year in the past I've purchased the download version I've been able to use that site to download either platform installable (exe or DMG) and use my license key across both. I don't think this has changed this year, however I've switched to the online version for the last 2 years so I can never be 100% sure that is still the case . Even if it had changed, if you can TT support they'll be happy to give you the other version for free if you have a purchased license code.

Not a huge fan of Intuit, but their support policies in this area has been consistently very accommodating for such requests.

12/31 portfolio composition for VUSXX is published. 100% were in Treasury or USGO!
This means that now we are guaranteed to have a good large percentage of VUSXX as state deductible, and most definitely eligible for state tax deduction in CA and other states that require >50% in Treasury/USGO for each quarter-end.

No Zillow connectivity for real estate, but I think you are better off just looking at the market once a year or so and estimating (which you could use Zillow for). Direct Zillow connectivity can add a lot of noise to the system, especially if your home value is a significant percentage of your net worth. Full view is better as a net worth and investment tracking tool than a spending/budgeting tool. You might need to look elsewhere if that's your primary concern. I prefer updating the value manually as well, and never used the Zillow integration in Mint. The Zillow Zestimate is super noisy for my market. Also, calculating the full value of the house in your networth is a bit deceptive given you will end up paying ~5% in commissions when yo...

I am not converting to CK until mid-March. I set a calendar reminder during the 3rd weekend of March (3/16) to download all transactions from Mint and convert to CK and evaluate. So far from everything I tried, Fidelity Full View's old UI comes closest to meeting my needs. If it had a dedicated Android app with transaction widget, it would be a perfect replacement for me. I'm trying Empower and the 1 year trial of Simplifi. Both of they have some issues with Fidelity on-and-off from my experience.. But Empower's Android app has the recent transactions widget which works great for me. In order of preference, I like Full View, followed by Empower followed by SimpliFi (which is funny because SimpliFi is a paid product but in my opinion it work...

Dusn wrote: Sat Dec 30, 2023 9:49 am I didn’t realize that the downloaded TurboTax requires MacOS Monterey 12.0. My MacBook Pro from 2013 apparently won’t upragrade to Monterey 12. I don’t see any option to return the download on Amazon. I guess I’ll need to use the online version but don’t really want to pay again for software I’ve already paid for. Anyone have ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks!
TT phone support have been pretty good in the past with such things. Contact them and they'll either likely refund you or let you download Windows version (which you can use through bootcamp). If you get lucky they may also offer you the online version for free (although you may have to upgrade to premier for extra if your tax situation demands that).

One idiot there got the 403 error and contacted Fidelity about it. SMH.
ugh, thats sad! Kills it for everyone. Hopefully Fidelity will find a workaround and repost the TT download/free links to eligible accounts again.

Re: Fidelity free Turbotax 2023

Bumping because I have the same problem. I can't find a place to escalate, have you? I'm planning to give it until early Jan or so. If it's not fixed by then I'll email my assigned advisor at Fidelity. Worst case we can always purchase the desktop version for $5. I remember there were similar issues last year for a few weeks that seem to have corrected itself. r/fidelityinvestments on Reddit is another potential place to escalate. EDIT: IT WORKED! I tried again and the total showed as $0. May be it's fixed at their end now. I successfully checked out and received a confirmation email as well. I am glad I completed the $0 cart checkout on TurboTax.com earlier. I no longer see the free/$5 TT card in my account, and navigating to https://www....

Re: TurboTax 2023 offer

The above link prices Deluxe (no state filing) +$10 Gift Card at $36.99 for me, which is pretty compelling. I'm on the fence of whether I "need" Premier though, since this is (likely intentionally) fairly opaque. The most complicated aspects of my taxes are having to manually adjust cost-basis for ESPP/RSU income, and having to file Form 1116 for a Foreign Tax Credit. Back when I worked at an employer who gave me ESPP I used deluxe without any issue. My brokerage company (E*Trade and Fidelity) both used to issue two 1099-B forms to me - one officially reported to IRS (with higher cost basis) and one for my own self (with discounted cost basis - actually Fidelity gave a separate form with the actual cost basis that looked very dif...

Re: Fidelity free Turbotax 2023

I just have a calendar reminder on 3rd Saturday of December each year to check Fidelity summary page. If it shows up, great. If not, I add a Slickdeals alert for the post-christmas deal on Amazon for under $35. So far since I moved my assets from vanguard to fidelity 2 years ago I've received it both years. And usually I'll see this thread on bogleheads even before the calendar reminder pops up

Re: Intuit's Mint App Shutting Down...Replacement Recommendations?

So far, besides empower, none of the aggregators I tried sync Morgan Stanley Stock Plan Connect.. Fidelity FullView, Monarch (MX, fincity and plaid), Pocketguard (both fincity & plaid) all error out while sync'ing. Not sure about Quicken simplifi (may be someone here who tried it can confirm). Basically I'm going with Empower for now although the Fidelity integration is a bit finnicky.

Harry Sit at The Finance Buff has a posting, Fidelity Private Client Group But No Free TurboTax, What to Do? https://thefinancebuff.com/fidelity-private-client-group-no-free-turbotax.html I don't think there's anything in that link that's not already in this thread. Yeah, it felt like a very low quality post.. not very typical of Harry Sit who usually has very good and detailed posts. I actually thought it was very good. Obviously it was not meant for people who read this thread and others like it on finance sites. But he had good information for people who have never noticed the offer before, like where to find it and checking your spouse's account if you don't see it. And no obvious incorrect information that I noticed, which for me is a...

It's been a few years so I don't recall the exact timeline, but my recollection is that vanguard took about weeks after they received the check to deposit it into my new employers 401K account there.

I don't have connectivity issues, but my balances are wrong. On my T-bill account with auto roll it constantly double counts the matures and renewing bills, even though Fidelity currently shows the balance on their site. With my CMA account it's always off by exactly $500. No idea why!

Re: Intuit's Mint App Shutting Down...Replacement Recommendations?

So far from all the apps I have used, Empower Personal Capital came closest to replacing Mint; and Fidelity Fullview is 2nd best. The lack of a good phone app means I will go with Empower for now. Unfortunately it does not import my Mint history, but thats the price of using "free" apps I guess.

Re: Fidelity free Turbotax 2023

For folks who have the offer in their dashboard but getting 503 errors, try this: 1) Open an incognito window and navigate to fidelity.com, login to account. Stay logged in during the next steps. 2) In the same incognito window, open a new tab then copy/paste the following URL into your browser's address bar: https://dpservice.fidelity.com/ftgw/dpdirect/inst-partner/v1/customers/redirection/url/turbo-tax-cd?fidelityContextCode=em If you see an error when navigating to this URL, it means you do not have the free TT offer. 3) You will see a JSON on your screen with URL and few other fields. Copy the URL (starting with https:// and will be of the format https://turbotax.intuit.com/affiliate/fidsubnew?id=<some-long-text>&p_uid=<some-long-te...

Re: Fidelity free Turbotax 2023

Is there a threshold for how many assets you have to get the free offer? I'm 7 figures plus and don't see any offer on my Fidelity portfolio page. Not that anyone has been able to determine. Unless you are clearly classified as ActiveTrader status, the overall consensus seems to be, Fidelity uses some formula akin to throwing a dart at a dart board while your eyes are covered. I've gotten the offer the last 2 years, however, I've reached the thresholds for the active trader status those 2 years (120+ trades in the 12 month trailing period) https://www.fidelity.com/trading/active-trader-trading-service-levels. Total portfolio is 7 figures. Trying to figure out how Fidelity counts a "trade". I assume each trade transaction counts a...
