Re: How do you buy time with money?

Purchase your own jet for airline travel instead of using the airlines.

Re: Opinion on my current HVAC quotes

I had a big HVAC install (5 ton) 2 years ago. My installer was highly regarded - he did another install for me previously - and said he didn't think the 2 stage or variable compressors were worth the extra $. So I went single stage compressor on a new 16 seer system. I don't remember the cost differ...

Re: Yet another emergency fund question

15% of 6 years of expenses equals 10.8 months of expenses. That's a lot of cash, which inflation eats away at over time. I would invest some of it depending on how well it makes you sleep at night. But if I thought I was probably going to lose my job soon, I would hold it real tight. Obviously it de...

US Megacorp backdoor Roth and HCE

I am employed by a large US based megacorp that provides all employees access to both pre-tax and post-tax 401k through Vanguard. According to the SPD details I can get from Vanguard, I am also allowed to perform in service distributions from after tax 401k contributions - so I am working toward tak...

Re: weber grills

my weber genesis silver is 16 years old. I've replaced almost all of the insides at least once, but it sits on a patio, and it gets used probably 3x week all year. I don't clean it often and I have no regrets. My mother in law has same make and model, but hers is a few years older and sits outdoors ...

Re: Computer shopping

In my experience "back to school" sales are the best time to purchase laptops. I haven't bought a new laptop in 3 or 4 years, but lenovo.com had the best prices in July and August. They also have an outlet. I suspect other manufacturers do the same thing. Also I've had luck using google and pricewat...

Re: What have you baked recently?

I've recently acquired a serious addiction to black bean brownies. I call it them my dark chocolate delivery system. This is just one of the many recipes I enjoy:

Re: Is this a poor decision?

Your numbers make it sound like no benefit on buying the Subaru. If I were you, I would keep the Tacoma unless you anticipate that cost to be too high. Your numbers don't reflect depreciation, which is often cited as the biggest expense of any new car. I am in a similar circumstance, but with a diff...

Re: How many folks choose to give inheritance to their children in unequal portions?

definitely split it equally. But I doubt he will. This is a decision most people should make in writing long before they die. Unfortunately I have seen many of my elder relatives say and do things completely out of character as they age into their 70s and 80s. It has made me realize I need to have m...

Re: 3 Row SUVs - Help Educate Me

Of course the minivan is the best choice but ego gets in the way. Unless you regularly need to tow a substantial amount the minivan wins hands down with cargo hauling, people hauling, gas mileage and price. +1 I will add that when I was looking at the big Tahoe/Suburban and Expedition, I tested mys...

Re: Emergency savings account

A savings account should be just that. Readily available funds for emergencies. But personally I have found having 2 savings accounts is even better than one, because one of them sometimes gets withdrawn from to cover accidental overspending or unexpected expenses. For me one savings account is used...

Re: Do I dump the Vanguard energy Fund in my 401k

I would hold the energy allocation if I were you. IMO you are demonstrating exactly the behavior of why most people severely underperform the market - don't sell low. As others have opined, your energy allocation is not that unusual. According to morningstar this is a 4 star Gold rated large blend f...
