Re: LED bulbs for enclosed fixtures

From Bulbs.com: Should LEDs be used in enclosed fixtures? Enclosed fixtures are defined as not only air tight, but also are fixtures that are enclosed on the side, rear and open in the front, such as many track heads. LEDs that are used in fixtures where there's less than 1/2" around the circumferen...

Is It Worth It? [to continue collecting Social Security Disability]

Presently I am on Social Security Disability which pays about 31K a year. This will end when I turn 66 in 4 months. I then have a choice to continue as things are or suspend my Social Security until age 70. If I suspend my Social Security until age 70, I estimate I will then collect about 41K a year...

Re: Move my Traditional IRA from Ameriprise to where?

Good luck with transferring from Ameriprise, they don't make things easy. Ameriprise would not allow the transfer to Vanguard without a Medallion Signature Guarantee. So, as a work around, and after paying a fee, I requested a check for the total amount of my account to be mailed to me, and then I i...

Social Security Strategy

I am 65 and am currently receiving Social Security disability benefits. My wife is 61. If upon attaining 66 years of age, maybe I suspend my SS disability payments and at the same time, as my wife turns 62, may she start collecting SS based upon her earnings record. Then, when I turn 70, as I once m...

Re: Amazon Echo & Tap

Have an Echo, I love it. Plays my all stations at Pandora and Amazon upon request. News and weather are there from the BBC or NPR when you want it. It will play any of your Audible audiobooks, and will even read to you your Kindle purchases. There are so many options available, and they grow longer ...

Lump Sum or Annuity

My wife is retiring at the end of the month at age 60. We have a decision to make, take a lump sum or an annuity. The monthly annuity would be $1325.00 vs. a payout of $206,000. Recently, I read an article in Money dealing with just this subject. http://time.com/money/4119204/partial-lump-sum-monthl...

Re: can your employer confiscate your retirement account?

Actually yes. In some construction unions, if you are retired and receiving a union pension, you cannot then open a non-union business that is in direct competition to the same union shops that are funding your pension, though there are no restrictions upon opening up any other type of business. If ...

Social Security Question

I am 64 years old. I started receiving Social Security disability benefits at age 62. Upon reaching my Full Retirement Age at 66, may I suspend receiving Social Security benefits until I am 70, thus allowing my benefits to grow at 8% a year for those 4 years?

Re: Reasonable to see a PA for Derm screening?

It depends. I went to see an orthopedic doctor for a pain in my knee. He took an MRI and suggested arthroscopic surgery to shave the meniscus. That didn't sit well....took the show on the road to another orthopedic practice. Their custom there was to first be screened by a PA. The PA that screened m...

Do Active Bond Funds Beat Index Bond Funds?

It's evident that most actively managed equity funds trail passive index equity funds in overall performance and cost. However, does that also apply to actively managed bond funds vs. passive bond funds? Can a case for the superiority of actively managed bond funds be made, especially in times of ri...

Help With Wife's Asset Allocation

My wife has asked me to put this out for your informed opinions. She is a RN, 58, looking to retire 1-3 years. Neither of us plan on touching our IRA's or 403K until age 70 1/2, or sooner if for some unforeseen emergency. Her objective, being this represents a big chunk of her retirement assets (oth...

Need Perspective and Advise

Need some help fact checking and deciding. I have an IRA with Vanguard of about 850 K. I am also retired and not drawing upon it. Basically, being somewhat conservative, my portfolio is split between stock (40%) and bond (60%) index funds. For another opinion, I visited a local financial adviser wit...
