Hi mbt863, I'm not clear on your situation. Are you saying your company gave 3 years of early RSU vesting to every employee, regardless of age + years of service? Is this all your previously granted RSU's or are some still restricted?
You might want to start a new thread since it's not clear that your situation is accelerated vesting in the "normal" sense.

You used to be able to download a spreadsheet (csv file) of all orders and items per order, for calendar year 2023 or whatever. I don't see a way to do that now. Anyone know how to do this? Or maybe they disabled it and you can only do it with a business account now?

Non-deductible IRA contributions: Why?
Is it correct that if your income is too high for deductible IRA contributions and Roth contributions, then the only benefit of contributing the maximum into a non-deductible IRA (ND-IRA) account is if you immediately do a backdoor Roth after each year's ND-IRA contributions?
Or in other words, if you don't do the backdoor Roth each year and just leave the ND-IRA account with stock market investments, you'd actually be better off investing the same money you'd contribute into the ND-IRA into an after-tax brokerage account instead (where it benefits from long term cap gains tax rates when cashing out the gains during retirement), as opposed to ordinary income tax rate if left in the ND-IRA)?

Ah, thanks!
It draws a 1 pixel wide box around the first file. I guess I was expecting it to highlight it so I didn't notice that faint box before. CTRL+TAB seems to do the same thing.

Windows file explorer, hotkey question
I can't seem to find an answer to this via google, and have tried a bunch of key combinations to no avail.
When you open file explorer you normally have a narrower sub-window on the left showing the directory tree, and the wider sub-window on the right showing the files within a given folder.
Using just keystrokes and no mouse, once you have selected the directory from the left pane using the up/down arrow keys, what keystrokes get your cursor to move into the file list pane so you can then choose a particular file with the up/down arrow keys?

Interesting video about car salespeople asking for your social security number:

Talks about distinctions between actual cash and cashier's checks, IRS form 8300, OFAC, and various other things you might not have known were, or can be, part of car sale transaction (depending on the specifics of the transaction).

And the answer is...it's another settlement check. The amount is quite small. If it takes more than 2 minutes to include it in my income taxes, it's probably not even worth cashing it.

High Tech Antitrust settlement: anyone get new letter in 2023?
There was a settlement back in 2016 where many folks here got checks. A few threads about it.
This is something new and apparently related. I see in my USPS informed delivery there's a new letter (Nov 2023) titled high tech antitrust settlement, but it wasn't in my mailbox today (sometimes happens that mail doesn't show up in the mailbox until a couple days after Informed Delivery shows it).
Anyone else getting such a letter and care to share what it says?

(This is easiest logistically as I would avoid having to live in the California house while trying to sell it.) Assuming I do things in this order, to which state do I owe capital gains tax? Would I already be considered a resident of the new state and therefore owe taxes there instead of California? Or would I owe them to California because the house is in California? Or, worst case scenario, would I have to pay taxes to both states? Thanks for updating with your conclusion. Re: Calculating additional withholding - what method do you use?
Owing money should not be a problem, unless you are outside the safe harbor and owe underpayment penalties. With interest rates being decent for the first time in a while, you should want to owe some money the following April- it means you got an interest free loan. There are basically two ways to get into the safe harbor- withhold at least 100% (or 110% if AGI >$150k) of last year’s total tax owed, or withhold at least 90% of the current year’s total tax owed. Speaking for myself, I withhold the minimum amount possible from my paychecks through the year, then run a tax projection in the November timeframe. If I need to withhold extra money to get into the safe harbor, I add “additional withholding” to my last few paychecks of the year. I’...

Re: Numbers right for RSUs in TurboTax?
Unfortunately, it appears your company is doing things differently than my employer did RSUs when I had them in 2016 and 2017. For my employer, shares sold to cover tax withholding were, as tesuzuki2002 says, reported only on the W-2. They were sold at the same price as they vested so no gain or loss and apparently, no need to report on a 1099-B. [...] That's the same as my employer handles it. I recall it being explained like this (I don't recall if this is literally true or was just explained this way to make it understandable): RSU's are not shares of stock and they only become regular/common shares of stock after they vest and are deposited into your brokerage account as common shares. The "shares" the company uses to cover t...

Yes, $500k in that case. Below link is an excellent, detailed presentation from FDIC on all the different aspects of the insurance. Many details and examples given on ownership categories (there are 14 different ownership categories (which I didn't know previously) but for most people, only a few categories will be applicable). Note on pg 41, FDIC adopted new rules merging the revocable and irrevocable trust categories into a single trust category; goes into effect April 2024). This may be of interest to some folks here. Pgs 32-40 (joint accounts) of interest to the OP and pg 41-52 includes informal revocable trusts (e.g. PoD accounts). [Recommendation to file 1040x with prior year Form 8606] IRS thank-you note
Over the years of reading BH threads about interactions with the IRS, it seems you generally never know for sure if something is resolved. If you haven't heard back after about a year following your last correspondence you just presume it's resolved. That's not a great way to operate. Maybe this is something new with the IRS but I just got a thank you note from the IRS, documenting the resolution of some form 8606 amendments I recently made. By the way, several BH threads have debated whether you do or do not need to file a form 1040x along with the amended form 8606's. People have had mixed experiences here and in other online sources, saying it depends who gets your amendment and the IRS has been inconsistent on it. I initially filed just...

Is there any reason to keep an inherited after-tax brokerage account as the separate account it was created as? In other words, is there any tax or other reason not to move and merge its contents with other pre-existing after-tax accounts (at the same brokerage firm but that probably doesn't really matter)? A friend asked me this and I can't think of any reason (except maybe messier cost basis tracking for any overlapping mutual funds/ETFs), but thought I'd ask here.

When shopping for a new smartphone, you may want to consider one that supports WiFi 6E (as opposed to just WiFi 6), so that, in the future if congestion gets bad at your apartment even in the 5 GHz band, you'd be able to buy a new WiFi 6E router and have the whole 6 GHz band and its vast number of new channels and wider channels (for indoor use only) to choose from. WiFi 6E routers are currently on the pricey side but I'd imagine they will come down as more devices support 6E.

I downloaded that one but it seems it's more intended for recording myriad external sources and I couldn't figure out from fumbling with its vast menu system of settings, how to record a selected portion of the screen. There's something about the canvas size and recorded video size that I couldn't figure out, and in general it seemed like there would be a lot of setup steps each time you want to record part of the screen. If you think I've misjudged that and it's really only a couple clicks to record a select rectangle on screen, let me know, and I'll fumble with it some more.

Anyone have recommendations for a one-time-fee lifetime license screen recorder where the user can choose any size rectangle, anywhere on the screen, and that captures actual pixel horiz x vert size selected on a 4k monitor? Application like Camtasia, at $300 + annual, is just too expensive. I have tried its cheaper sibling, Snag-it (now $63 + $13 annual thereafter), but had issues with past versions with the audio being out of sync or missing and never able to resolve it permanantly. The built-in Windows WIN+G gamebar doesn't allow user-selectable recording area and doesn't allow recording of every type of application. I'm assuming this is for the web version of the tax program, and that the desktop version isn't sending the data to Meta. Anyone disagree? that was my take One would think (or maybe "hope") the downloaded/desktop version wouldn't be involved in this practice. Part of the reason I buy the more costly downloadable version and avoid online or cloud based versions is because of these sorts of info-sharing issues that (to me anyway) almost seem to give implied consent when you use the cheaper (or free) online versions). I note, however, that many of the applications I have installed on my desktop share usage info with the mother ship but they do (allegedly) give some control of what that information is. It's never clear what, and how ...

One thing to consider, including if you're governed by an HOA and CC&R's that may have some not so favorable clauses about security cameras, is the potential for neighbors to complain their privacy is being invaded by your cameras. If it looks at all possible based on where your camera is mounted that your camera captures the activity of a neighbor or even just their car entering/leaving, it may be a good idea to do a screen grab of exactly what your camera captures and proactively take it over to the neighbor to show them. People can have a wide range of reactions, ranging from, sure that's fine and I don't care, to the person who is highly distressed by it. I heard a story about this from a co-worker, and a really nasty scenario could...

I had an error in an amount I entered on form 8606 (non-deductible IRA) a few years ago and that rippled through to subsequent years, so I have all my amended and signed 8606 forms for these tax years (with explanations of the changes at the bottom of each one and noting no change to any form 1040 entry) ready to mail, but it's not clear where I mail them to. A few other bits of info gathered over the past couple days... I've now confirmed with 3 different tools that there is no system-related traffic to or from the disk when this "head seeking noise" is going on. None. So that rules out virus scans or indexing or pagefiles or anything system-related. Even when these drives were brand new, just formatted and with minimal data yet stored on them (a few MB just to test that writing and reading worked), it had this same behavior of making the "head seeking noise" for extended and repeated intervals. In other words, whatever it's doing, it involves the unwritten/empty sectors of the disk, like some sort of media integrity scanning on a persistent basis. I can hear the distinct cl...

I bought a couple of Seagate Skyhawk 4TB HDD's that I'm using as data storage drives for my desktop PC, plugged into a USB HDD docking station. I bought these during the pandemic when more traditional data storage drives were ridiculously priced and these were actually cheaper, even though they are normally more expensive. For whatever reason, I hear "head seeking noises" when these drives are otherwise idle and no files from these drives are opened. The noise is fairly constant for say 10-15 minutes then it stops for a while, then it starts again. Repeat. It never stops completely. I don't see any disk bandwidth being used (via resmon or via HWMonitor) on these drives while I hear the noise, so there are no data transfers to/from...

CPU cooler clearance, desktop case
When ordering a desktop PC case so that a particular CPU cooler will fit, how many millimeters is the minimum safe clearance margin?
If all the claimed measurements are to believed, I suppose 1mm of margin is safe. But motherboard standoff heights, board thicknesses, CPU socket thicknesses, and processor thicknesses can't all be the same, so there must be some margin in the numbers.
For example, would 2mm of difference between claimed 158mm cooler height and 160mm max height per the case manufacturer be best to avoid (maybe shoot for at least 5mm clearance)?
Thanks

Maybe yes, maybe no. Depends on various things so more info is needed.
Are you selling one and buying a new one? If yes, in the same market? It could even out, or it could skew in favor of one or the other.
Would this likely be your last house ever?
Bigger or smaller than current house (if you currently have a house)?
Are you relocating due to a job change and have to find a place rather than just want to?
House prices may not necessarily drop considerably. They may just level off for a while. Or they may continue to go up. It might also vary from market to market. Or they may tank. You can't time the housing market much better than the stock market.
Are you selling one and buying a new one? If yes, in the same market? It could even out, or it could skew in favor of one or the other.
Would this likely be your last house ever?

Re: How does your family collaborate?
All of mankind accomplished this "manually" in the pre-smartphone (so, before ~2007, which is really not that long ago) era, and without any electronic device aids whatsoever in the 80's and before. Just saying, it's more than remotely practical. Practicality is all relative.dukeblue219 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 26, 2022 4:57 pmNot even judging, good for you, but how is that remotely practical? Possibly if you are retired in a rural area?

Re: Looking for slide-in drawer partition brackets...
I appreciate all the suggestions. The "binning strips" (I learned a new name) would probably work even if a bit different than I had imagined, but it seems only one company makes them and the 1/8" gap version is only available directly from them. The item price is reasonable but the shipping is more than the product. Some of the other products mentioned might work as well, but a few are more than I'm willing to spend on an open-ended project like this where there's no end in sight to the number of drawers I might eventually partition. lthenderson made an interesting suggestion (make the brackets from wood strips and hot glue them). All things considered I think I'll try that route first. It's the most customizable for differe...

Looking for slide-in drawer partition brackets...
I'm looking for some inexpensive plastic channel brackets, for the purpose of gluing them to opposite sides of a drawer, then cutting some 1/8" hardboard the width and height of the drawer, as a partition to slide into the channels. Generally I'd be installing more than one partition per drawer. I can't figure out what they are called since I'm having no luck finding them via google search. The general shape of the bracket I have in mind looks kind of like this metal one: https://cdn.partitionsandstalls.com/media/catalog/product/cache/302b5d050b7a4edca8e5ccfb35844fb5/9/a/9a2888_4.jpg Except I'd want the bracket made from some inexpensive plastic. It would have a flat back for gluing, and be about 2-4" long, maybe 3/4-1.5" wid...

Depending on the version of excel you have, you might also look into the SORT() function.

SS question: what if eligible spouse passes before claiming?
If the higher earning, eligible-aged spouse passes before claiming, can the surviving spouse (also eligible but has not claimed) still claim at 50% of the deceased spouse's earnings record? If so, what age is the benefit calculated from?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Updated annual SSA statements are available for download; a question
Thanks for the replies. I don't have any of the considerations they call out, with the possible exception that I got a fairly small lump sum payout of a pension for a company I worked at many years in the past. Maybe that was the trigger, but there's no ongoing or future benefit from that so it shouldn't have triggered the message w/r/t pensions.

Updated annual SSA statements are available for download; a question
Usually I get a reminder email to download my annual statement but I didn't receive one this year. Not yet anyway.
They redesigned the website and the form. Both seem improved to me.
There's a section called personalized documents, and in that I had a document titled "You have earnings not covered by social security." I have no idea why they think this is applicable to me, and reading the document, which is just generalized info, didn't help. Did anyone else get this in your personalized documents and not sure why?

Re: Can wood filler make a closet door "whole"?
A photo would help since it's not entirely clear what you want to achieve. If you just want to square up the bottom of the doors because of the wear from previously scraping the floor and the bottoms are uneven, that's fairly simple to do if you know anyone with a track saw. Generally a hollow core closet door slab will have at least 1.5" of solid pine inside the sandwich between the exterior panels so you could shave off an eighth inch or quarter inch or whatever, with no problem. If I were doing this I'd remove the doors, put a strip of blue painters tape along the bottom, draw your desired cut line onto the tape, align the track and shave it off with the track saw, reinstall. I'd probably also use some strong magnets and scan them a...

Re: Disposing of foam mattress -- can I cut it up with an electric saw?
Scalloped-blade bread knife or a scalloped knife-edge jigsaw blade like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001J0U1HC/
A fine tooth saw blade generally doesn't work well with compressive foam but does ok with rigid foam like styrofoam. The teeth will catch and just vibrate the foam up and down. It might eventually work but not the best blade for the job.

Re: Trust: How to protect Investment Account Numbers?
I also had my will/trust prepared through my employer's legal plan where I didn't have to pay anything beyond the subscription fee for the legal plan and one small fee out-of-pocket to file county documents to transfer title of my house into the trust. This will generally be a fairly generic will/trust preparation arrangement because of that. So the attorney will not be funding the trust (i.e. no work involved on their part once the documents are prepared and signed) and there's no need to disclose account numbers and there's no ongoing management by the attorney (you would fund the trust yourself). Some of these attorneys may give you the option to have them fund the trust (transfer title of accounts into the name of the trust, which can b...
