Vanguard index mutual fund may be converted to the corresponding ETF if such a transfer is desired. (Transfer in the other direction is not possible for individual investors). If I receive a dividend at firm A, and later transfer to firm B, how will firm A know whether the dividend I received while at their firm was qualified or not? Firm A will be issuing the 1099, correct? But firm B has all the shares now.

I've edited the original post since I wasn't clear. The nuance is that not the full account is being transferred, but rather some of the shares whose lots I would like to select. Were you a legacy TD Ameritrade customer where they waived the transfer fee?
Otherwise, how were the transfer fees charged?
